Basketball was created in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian professor, who invented the game to keep students active indoors during the winter in Massachusetts. He nailed a peach basket to the wall and established basic rules. The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1946 by hockey rink owners and began in New York City. The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) was established in 1996 by women who wanted a professional league and has grown to include 13 teams.

2. The Beginning of Basketball Basketball started in the year 1891. It was created by Dr. James Naismith a Canadian professor that worked at the YMCA. During the winters in Springfield, Massachusetts the scientist wanted to find a way to keep his kids fit by playing an indoor game during the winter. After much trial and error he decided to place a peach basket 10 feet high on the wall write some basic rules, and the game began.

3. The NBA The National Basketball Association (NBA) started in the year 1946 on June 6th. It was started by the major hockey rink owners of the Midwestern and northeastern parts of the united states. The league started in New York City.

4. WNBA The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is the women's division of the NBA. It was founded in 1996 by women around the world who wanted to play basketball professionally. It has 13 different teams currently competing.
