5. Interaction Teacher + student Teacher + Student + student + teacher Student + student (informal) Face to face + Blended + Distance + Informal
6. I remember when.. It used to be that your main resources were only used during a teaching session. before, during and post session.
7. Why should we care? Help your audience solve their problems of understanding and knowledge
8. Benefits for teaching and learning Learners Staff Interaction + Additional context + Enhance learning + Repurposing Repurposing + Support context + Measureable + Support different learners
9. Benefits for newbies include: Time shifting + Collaboration + Reflection + Assessment
10. Functions of PLEs Managing information Generating content Connecting with others Learning Recording and sharing achievement (e-portfolio) cc Steve Wheeler, University of Plymouth, 2009 Sharing with others (exchange) Communication with others (dialogue)
11. What happens if…. Codec issues Hardware…er no soundcards/speakers Designing within the space (constraints) Speed (see later firefox example)
12. Avoid common problems Lack of understanding of audience to give them resources they cannot interact with The odd dead link can be forgiven but that’s all really.
14. Persona Paddy Background Paddy is in a technical role and it is his job to support his colleagues with anything using technology. Goals and motivation Paddy wants support to identify solutions to common problems. He has very little budget but is happy to try different approaches to finding a solution. He believes that the correct use of technology will help him and others use time and resource more effectively.
15. What devices do your audiences use? Own computer? Mobile device? Games console? Institution computers - What is the spec?
16. Mobile usage at Edinburgh 49% smartphone 39% unlimited data 50% Check email daily
17. Here, there and everywhere Pre, during and post session We can add value.
33. Designing for the web Featuring five sections, each covering a core aspect of graphic design: Getting Started Research Typography Colour Layout. http://designingfortheweb.co.uk/
38. Our services Advice documents - covering many uses of still images, moving images and audio Training & consultancy - One day workshops or tailored collaboration Free Helpdesk - Responses within five days Online surgery - Fortnightly sessions
39. Screencast workflow A screencast refers to a recording then delivering of the graphic content of a defined region of the computer screen
40. Components of a screencast screen capture presentation software/web demonstration workflow demonstration audio voiceover audio materials video images text branding (idents, logos etc) credits metadata
41. technical workflow template development agree on software, tools and settings produce common content branding graphics idents configure and save templates
42. Technical workflow content production/presentation screen capture audio recording other content compositing and editing rendering and export Delivery
43. Delivery Using the measures of success, test how things pan out at the delivery stage
45. Bringing it together Identify goals + Strategy based on audience and resource + Production (workflow) + Measure success and improve

…is considering the audience experience from the moment they: see, hear, interact with the resource, to the last time they interact with it.Much like when buildings are designed. Its more than just bricks and mortar, the spaces consider the uses.Photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/streamishmc/2340150187/
Teaching staff and support staff are now in the business of creating interactive experiences.Book reference: Linchpin, Seth Godin, p85http://www.flickr.com/photos/tidymind/4327717486/Photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/storem/349222636/
Potential benefits are for both the creator as well as the consumerPhoto credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/tinker-tailor/4285598900/
Benefits of digital mediaInteraction – we can design and/or steer the interactions with learnersAdditional context – We can now produce lots of material that further supports ideas in the classroom – think hyper-linking but with multimedia not just text-based.Enhance learning – Multimedia creates new opportunities for ways of teaching Repurposing – For learners much of the outcomes can be used as evidence for further learning/employers. For staff there is scope to use learners work for informing future cohorts and ot share with colleagues
We can use multimedia to support our PLEs.Couldn’t come to Plymouth and not cite Steve could we!

It is our duty to understand our audience and delivery resources that reflect their skills and resource. If the learners all have smartphones, take advantage – if not then don’t.
Why are we building any resourcesImage credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/3489600094/in/set-72157604378784834/
Its quite rare to have 100% of our user base in front of us on a weekly basis. Use some of the time to get to know them better. http://carsonified.com/blog/design/how-to-understand-your-users-with-personas/
Many of you here will check work email.Eventually you start to do other work related ‘stuff’ and so do/will learners.Stats:http://efoundations.typepad.com/efoundations/2010/03/mobile-use-at-edinburgh.html
This added value should lead to better results.

Stat from http://blog.mozilla.com/metrics/2010/04/05/firefox-page-load-speed-%E2%80%93-part-ii/Measuring allows us to benchmark our results which then can then use to do something else
WORKBOOK story: I used a workbook, and though most folk left it behind, I thought it was useful… until I asked the next cohort and they said they didn’t need it, just the urls.. So I swapped to a Google document with clickable links and now everybody is happy – no more out of date info and a added benefit is a saving on scheduling the prints and on print cost.
Even when you have produced a good resource there is room for improvement – Just look at F1The above graphic is displayed during practice, qualifying and the race. It displays live location and car data so that the team can look for improvements. http://mclaren.com/home

IPSGA is a system of riding used by IAM.We ride to this system EVERYTIME we go out. It allows us to have a plan that we can adapt at any moment. If we make a mistake then we can measure this as we are constantly checking against our “measures of success”.
