To believe that it is possible to ‘manage’ change is wishful thinking; this implies that it is possible to know where the change is leading, how to get there, how to control the people involved and all other influences on the process. ‘Cultivation’ of change implies that all are learning from the process with growth and influence rather than control or instruction of the groups to act as desired. It is about treating each person as an individual, and that by influencing individuals the organisation can be changed by degrees (Handy, 1999: 292).
