THE second PILLAR OF ISLAM IN PRACTICALIZING OBEDIENCE TO
THE MESSAGE OF THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)

“(Establish you) Swolah (in the way or manner which)
you see me (do the) swolah.”
(Hadith narrated by Bukhary and Muslim)


“O You who believe ! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger,
and those charged with authority from among you.”
(Qur’an : An-Nisa’ : 4 :59)


“Those who listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it:
those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones
endued with understanding.”
(Qur’an: Az-Zumar:39:18)


 In respecting the dominance of the followers, adherents of the
school of Fiqh of al-Mujtahid-mutlaq al-Imam Muhammad ibn Idris
ash-Shafi-’ie rhm.a. here in this region, the practices in this
manual / lesson on FIQH matters, shall subscribe and be in
conformity with this school of Islamic jurisprudence ( madzhab).
 Yet, we hold to a healthy respect and tolerance ( tasamuh) towards
other madzaahib and ikhtilaaf (differences of opinion) amongst
Islamic scholars.
 The dominant schools of Islamic jurisprudence generally accepted
are the, Ja’afari, Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi’e and Hanbali.


Ta’rif (definition)
From the point of view of Syara’ (legal) which is descriptive:

“It consists of some recitations and actions, beginning
with glorification (Takbir), and is concluded with
Salaam (greeting of Peace) – with which we worship
Allah (formal devotion) by complying with all its fixed
conditions.”

Its “Haqiqat” (Reality) is defined as:

“ Presenting our entire self to Allah, with reverential
fear towards Him, as well as instilling in our self,
sense of esteem towards His Glory and Greatness, as
well as towards His Absolute and Perfect Power”

“Ruh al-Swolah” i.e. the Essence or Spirit of Swolah is defined:

”Communion (Tawajjuh) of our entire self, with hope
and complete reliance towards Allah, with humility in
His presence and sincerity, be it in our Dzikr (utterances
of His remembrance), Du’a (supplications) and praises
(Glorification of Him).”

RUKUN QOLBIY-YAH

ESSENTIAL PERTAINING
TO THE HEART/ MIND


 “Niyyat” is to formulate intention in the heart / mind
that one is:
[a] with full consciousness and purposeful; to
[b] perform a specific act (must be clear of what it is that
act one is about to do); and
[c] the reason for doing it must be solely for the sake
(fulfilling a command – thus striving to gain acceptance
of & seeking nearness to) Allah - sincerely.


 This intention must be present at the beginning of
performing the Swolah (i.e. At the first TAKBEER)

 It must be in a language which one understands.


 Thus some examples:
“O Allah! I am performing the obligatory SUBUH/FAJR
prayer (swolah), two rak’aat (cycle of bowing), because
of You (O Allah).”
OR
“O Allah! I am performing the obligatory ZUHR prayer
(swolah), four rak’aat (cycle of bowing), because of You.”

while the second is mustahab (sunnat)


RUKUN TARTIB
ESSENTIAL TO FOLLOW THE WAY OR
MANNER OF SEQUENCE (ORDER) AS
HOW PROPHET MUHAMMAD ‫, ﷺ‬
PERFORMED THE SWOLAH

 Swolah begins with the first “TAKBIR” and
ends with “SALAAM”, to be perform in state of
purity.
 While performing it, any one of the following
acts or factors will cause or render the Swolah to
be deemed as nullified:

1. One’s wudhu’ [ablution] is nullified – such as
when any impurity proceeds from one’s ‘lower
body openings’ e.g. Urine, stool, gas, worm or
much vomiting - the swolah itself would be
invalidated. The wudhu’ has to be re-taken
before doing the swolah all over again.


2. Talking will render the swolah invalid. But, if
need be out of urgent necessity, certain ways of
communication allowed e.g. a mistake by the
Imam (prayer leader) may be corrected by those
behind him with saying “sub-Haa-nAllaah”
aloud; amongst ladies by tapping the back of her
hands to signal, etc.

3. Making too much movement other than what is
required in swolah. “Too much” is defined as
“three or more consecutive movements of any
major limbs.”
Exceptions, when there is urgency, such as tending
to something which cannot be delayed - as long as
one do not talk while tending to these emergency.

4. Drinking, eating, chewing or smoking while
praying will render the swolah null and void.
5. Turning the chest away from the direction of the
Qiblah (i.e. towards the Ka’aba in Makkah) will
invalidate the swolah


6. Changing the niyyat / intention from doing one
type of swolah into another e.g. While
performing obligatory (fardhu) swolah, changing
it to one that is recommended (nawafil, sunnat),
etc.


7. Committing breach of (or lacking in) any of the
following Arkaan (essentials) viz.:
 Intention (niyyat) at the start of swolah
 All postures – standing, bowing, prostrating and
sitting

 The required pause (tuma’ninah) while assuming
a particular posture or position.
 The correct order or sequence (tartib).

 Essential recitations:
(a) Takbira-tul-Ihram

(b) Surah Al-Fatihah

(c) Tasha-hud with Salawat (d) Salaam.


8. When the “aurat” (i.e. parts of the body that
requires covering) becomes exposed – e.g. For
man the area between the navel and the knees;
for woman, any parts of her body other than her
face and hands up to her wrists. But if the
exposure is brief, and one is able to immediately
rectify (cover it), then this is excused.

Most Esteem!
And to Him be Praise

SAMI-’ALLAA-HU LIMAN HAMIDAH *

Allah hears those who praises Him,
O our Lord” And to You is the Praises.

Glory be [i.e. how perfect] is my Lord,
Most High!
And to Him be Praise

ROB-BIGH-FIR-LI, WAR –HAM-NI,
WAJ-BUR-NI, WAR-FA’-NI, WAR-ZUQ-NI ,
WAH-DI-NI, WA-’AA-FI-NI, WA’-FU-’AN-NI *

My Lord! Forgive me, have Mercy upon me,
enrich me, raise me in rank,
provide for me, guide me,
grant me health, and erase my sins.

WA ‘ALA- AA-LI MUHAM-MAD
* KA-MAA – SWOL-LAI-TA ‘ALAA- IB-RA-HEE-MA

And protect me, with Your Mercy,
from the evil that exists by Your Decree

For You alone can command (pass judgment) and
none can command (pass judgment) upon You



IN- NA – HU - LAA –YA – DZIL – LU – MAN – WAA – LA - IT
Surely whosoever You befriend (and protect),
is never dishonoured (nor humiliated)



WA – LAA – YA – ‘IZ – ZU - MAN – ‘AA – DA - IT
Whereas whoever You have taken as enemy
shall never taste honour (glory)



TA – BAA – RAK – TA – ROB – BA – NAA – WA – TA – ‘AA – LA - IT

You are the Blessed, Our Lord Sustainer,
the Most Exalted



FA-LA – KAL – HAM – DU – ‘A-LAA – MAA – QO – DWA - IT

To You belongs all the praises upon all that
You have decreed

And I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to
You (of all my sins)

Rob-bij- ‘al-nee mu-qee-mas-swolaa – wa – min dzur –ri-ya-tee
Rob-ba-naa - wa ta –qob-bal – du-’aa

"O my Lord! make me one who establishes regular Prayer,
and also (raise such) among my offspring (who establish
regular Prayer) O our Lord! and accept Thou my
Supplication."
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 40)

Rob-banagh-fir-li wa li-waa-lidai-ya wa-lil-mu’-mi-nee-na
Yau-ma ya-quu-mul-Hisaa-b

“O our Lord! cover (us) with Thy Forgiveness― me, my parents,
and (all) Believers, on the Day that the Reckoning will be
established!“
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 41)

Allaa-hum-maj-’al-nee minat-taw-waa-bee-na
waj-’al-nee minal-muta-twaah-hi-reen.

‘O Allah, make me of those who return to You often in
repentance and make me of those who remain clean and pure.’


Sub-Haa-na kal-laahumma wa-bi-Ham-dika ash-hadu an
laa ilaa-ha il-laa anta as-tagh-firuka wa-a-too-bu- ilayk.

‘How perfect You are O Allah, and I praise You, I bear witness
that none has the right to be worshipped except You, I seek Your
forgiveness and turn in repentance to You.’


JAZALLAA-HU ‘AN-NAA MUHAM-MADAN SWOL-LAL-LAAHU
‘ALAY-HI WA- AA-LIHI WA-SAL-LA-MA – MAA HU-WA AH-LUHU

“(May) Allah grant His Reward upon Muhammad, salutations of
Allah and Peace be upon him and his family, in accordance with
what he deserves (in Allah’s knowledge & estimation).”


“And may the Salutations of Allah and peace be upon
our Leader Muhammad
and his family and Companions.
And all praises belongs to Allah,
Lord Sustainer of the worlds.”

”Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they ascribe (to Him)! And Peace on the Messengers! And
praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.”
