the term “SHAFA’AT ”
HALAQAH

12. REFLECTIONS:
Allah is the only One Who is God (Divine) and Who alone is
Robb (Lord, Sustainer, Cherisher) of the worlds. He is the
Absolute One without any partners, associate nor rival in His
Divinity (TAUHEED AL-ULUHIYYAH) nor in His Lordship (TAUHEED
RUBUBIYYAH).
He administers and sustains everything in accordance with His
Ways (SUNNA-TULLAH).
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
14. Say: "O Allah! Lord of Power (and Rule) You gives Power to
whom You pleases and You strips off power from whom You
pleases, You endues with honour whom You pleases, and You
bring low, whom You pleases; in Your hand is all Good.
Verily, over all things You have power.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 26)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
15. REFLECTIONS:
It is within “SUNNA-TULLAH” the decree that certain beings in
creation are accorded the permission by Allah SWT, to help, to
intercede, to mediate, to plead for, to advocate on behalf, etc. for
others.
This is the context of how Muslims view “TAWASSUL” and
“SHAFA’AT ”
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
16. As in all things, nothing can occur except by the will and
permission of Allah.
“Who is there that can intercede (YASH-FA’ ) in His presence
except as He permits?”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 255)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
17. Even in ours lives, other things or beings do intervene or help
us to attain to some benefits which Allah, in His Wisdom, have
placed some benefits for us in or through them. In the physical
or material nature, such ‘intervention’ can easily be understood.
Yet we know these do not possess independent power, but
ultimately are conferred by Allah.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
18. We can easily understand the workings of “the cause and effect”
regarding physical aspects, but what about in ‘spiritual or
metaphysical’ matter or domain where science cannot reason it out?
This is where we have to rely upon true knowledge, (KHABAR
SwODIQ) from Revelation, rather than accept what is being claimed
by people.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
19. It is in the area of the “unseen” (GHAYIBAH) that we are to be
careful to distinguish between what is False “BAATwIL”– termed
as “KHURAFAT ” (superstitions) and myths (“TAKHAYYUL ”), from
the True – “HAQQ-HAQIQAH” (reality) substantiated (or affirmed
to exist by Islam).
And even those “unseen matters of intervention” affirmed to
exist by Islam, it also differentiates those that is accepted and can
be followed, from those to be shunned and rejected.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
20. In a way the most common ‘intervention’ being our supplication to
Allah (Du’a) for one another.
In this world, there are presence of certain things and people in our
midst, which can have an effect upon our well-being; so too are the
interceding angels, persons and other creatures - pleading on our
behalf, etc.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
22. “Those who sustain the Throne (of Allah) and those
around it sing Glory and Praise to their Lord; believe in
Him; and implore forgiveness for those who believe:
"Our Lord! Thy reach is over all things in Mercy, and
Knowledge. Forgive, then, those who turn in
repentance, and follow Thy Path: and preserve them
from the Penalty of the Blazing Fire!”
(Qur’an: Ghafir: 40: 7)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
24. • The term “ “ pronounce “ SHAFA-’AT “ -
meaning :
“mediation, intercession, intervention,
advocacy, pre-emption, etc.”
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
25. When discussing “SHAFA’AT ” , we are referring to “the help,
intercession or mediation” which Allah has permitted for some
among His creations, to make for others, in the Hereafter.
This “SHAFA’AT” can be given by, and only to benefit those who
had adhered to TAUHEED, and not to the MUSHRIKEEN.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
26. “And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no
power of intercession;― except only those who bears
witness to the Truth and they know (him).”
(Qur’an: Zukhruf: 43: 86)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
28. “Say: "Do ye see what it is ye invoke besides Allah?
Show me what it is they have created on earth, or
have they a share (SHIRK) in the heavens? Bring me
a Book (revealed) before this, or any remnant of
knowledge (ye may have), if ye are telling the truth!“
(Qur’an: Ahqaf: 46: 4)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
29. “And who is more astray than one who invokes,
besides Allah, such as will not answer him to the
Day of Judgement, and who (in fact) are
unconscious of their call (to them)?
(Qur’an: Ahqaf: 46: 5)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
30. In these verses, it is clear that Allah chastise the MUSHRIKEEN
(those who ascribe partners to Allah) because their AQEEDAH
(believe) is wrong – i.e. opposite to TAUHEED.
These verses do not refer to the MUWAHEEDIN (people upholding
TAUHEED) who direct all Du’a or invocation to Allah Who Alone is
Divine, who do not ascribe partners to Him.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
32. “And [commanded], 'Direct your face toward the
religion, inclining to truth, and never be of those
who associate others with Allah; (MUSHRIKEEN);
And do not invoke (make Du’a to others) besides
Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms
you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of
the wrongdoers.‘”
(Qur’an: Yunus: 10: 105-106)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
34. “And if Allah should touch you with adversity,
there is no remover of it except Him; and if He
intends for you good, then there is no repeller of
His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills
of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the
Merciful“
(Qur’an: Yunus: 10: 107)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
35. Thus, for Muslim to believe that others amongst Allah’s creation
to be capable of giving “SHAFA’AT” (with permission by Allah
SWT, as explained) is not “SHIRK ”.
The greatest of which is the “SHAFA’AT” which Allah SWT granted
upon our Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. to make.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
36. “The happiest person who receive my intercession
(in the Hereafter), will be he who says:
LAA-ILAA-HA-IL-LALLAH (There is no god except Allah),
sincerely in his heart (i.e. pure from any SHIRK)”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary & Muslim)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
37. There will also be others – angels, prophets and righteous
persons, who will be given the permission by Allah SWT ,
to make “SHAFA’AT ” (intercession) in the Hereafter too.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
39. “Angels will intercede, the Prophets will intercede,
and the Believers will intercede (for other people)
until there remain nothing except the Mercy of
the One Who is Most Merciful (Allah), Who will
restrain the Fire of Hell and bring out from it, a
people who have never done any good deed,
(blackened) like a charred coal.”
(Hadith reported by Muslim)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
40. Another, which can intercede for us in the Hereafter is our
deeds of sincere devotion e.g. Qur’anic recitation or fasting;
our worship and deeds of righteousness, etc.
Such deeds will appear on Judgement day as a person who
will be ‘advocate interlocutor’ for the Believer who has
performed them sincerely for Allah.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
41. Yet the most important point to note regarding “SHAFA’AT ”
is that none of these things, people or even angels are Divine ,
or has the independent (exclusive) power to harm nor bring
any benefit whatsoever, except only by Allah’s Will and
permission.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
42. Muslims upholding TAUHEED, always believe that every
supplication (Du’a) is directed to Allah and the right to
fulfil or reject any requests belongs to Allah, Who Alone is
God (Divine). Allah SWT has the absolute prerogative and
power over all.
Make no mistake about this.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
43. Say: "To Allah belongs exclusively (the right to grant)
intercession (SHAFA’AT) : to Him belongs the dominion
of the heavens and the earth: in the End, it is to Him
that ye shall be brought back.“
(Qur’an: Zumar: 39: 44)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
45. “Or, who (is it who) listens to the (soul) distressed
when it calls on Him, and who relieves its
suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of
the earth? (Can there be another) god besides
Allah? Little it is that ye heed!”
(Qur’an: Naml: 27: 62)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
46. “How many so ever be the angels in the heavens, their
intercession (SHAFA’AT) will avail nothing except after
Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is
acceptable to Him.”
(Qur’an: Najm: 53: 26)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
47. “On that Day shall no intercession (SHAFA’AT) avail except
for those for whom permission has been granted by (Allah)
Most Gracious and whose word is acceptable to Him.”
(Qur’an: TaHa: 20: 109)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
48. “Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him;
but He forgives anything, else to whom He pleases; to set
up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous
indeed.”
(Qur’an: An-Nisa’: 4: 48)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
49. There is no controversy regarding asking the “SHAFA’AT ” from a
living righteous person.
Regarding whether this can still be sought from the dead,
differences of opinion occur amongst Islamic scholars.
Those who objected perhaps would regard this as akin to
“SHIRK” and thus forbade the practice.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
50. However those who allows this argue that any request to a
righteous person is in fact addressing to the ‘soul’ of the person,
not his physical self.
So, whether the person is dead or alive makes no difference.
And the request for “SHAFA’AT” is for the person to implore or
plead or Du’a to Allah – not that he has the exclusive power to
give what is being asked.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
51. As to the objection that these people are dead, some of the basis
in response:
“Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay
they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 169)
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
52. Taught us , when visiting the grave, to recite :
‘Peace be upon you all, O inhabitants of the graves,
amongst the believers and the Muslims.
Verily we will, Allah willing, be united with you,
we ask Allah for well-being for us and you.’
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
53. In this regard, those who prefer not to seek “SHAFA’AT ”
upon the dead, as precaution to safeguard themselves from
tarnishing their TAUHEED (as they understand it), is indeed
commendable, and we respect this. Especially when to their
mind, is somewhat ‘similar’ to what other religions may
practice, while they are not able to distinguish the
difference.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
54. Some prefer to follow this opinion, not because they consider
seeking “SHAFA’AT ” from the dead at graves, tombs and
shrines as wrong, but they prefer this opinion only to avoid
the ‘ignorant’ public from misperceiving and blindly imitating
their action for going there.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
55. Yet, they who prefer this opinion, should not easily misjudge
nor accuse other Muslims who do so, i.e. visiting graves or
shrines of Prophets (NABIYYIN), the Truthful (SWIDDIQEEN)
Martyrs (SHUHADA’) and Righteous people (SWOLIHEEN) - by
labelling them as “MUSHRIK“ (polytheist) OR “QUBURIYUN
-grave worshippers”, etc.

56. “(Do not) call each other by (offensive) nicknames : Ill-seeming is
a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has
believed: And those who do not desist are (Indeed) doing
wrong.”
