3. II – God’s provision “ Give us this day our daily bread . . . ” vs. 11 A.) THE SUBSTANCE Bread here not only represents food, but is symbolic of all necessary provision for the preservation of life. (Food, Clothing, Shelter) This part of the prayer both in the form of a petition and an affirmation that every thing comes from God. “ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” – James 1:17
4. “ Give us this day our daily bread . . . ” vs. 11 B.) THE SOURCE When all our needs are met and everything is going well in our lives we often think that it is because of how good and hard working we are. The prayer reminds us that the source of all of this is God our Father. “ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (Cebuano)
5. C.) SUPPLICATION Supplication (Petitioning) is expressed in the word “Give.” This is the heart of the petition because it recognizes need. Even though God may already have provided it, we ask Him for it in recognition of His past, present as well as trust on his future provision. “ Give us this day our daily bread . . . ” vs. 11 E.) THE SCHEDULE The schedule for God’s provision is “daily.” We are to rely on Him one day at a time. We are not to worry for our future as He has given us the confidence that he will provide for our needs. D.) THE SEEKERS The “us” in Jesus model prayer are those who belongs to him. God is committed to supplying the needs of His own.
6. Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass . . . Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. . . The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way . . . I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
7. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Cebuano) Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (Cebuano) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
