3. CVIS Story
On a sunny March day in 2006 a consortium of more than 60 partners came together to kick-off a joint
venture of a scale rarely seen in Europe, or the rest of the world. What drove them together was a shared
vision, a vision of a cooperative future. A place where leading European public authorities, vehicle
manufacturers, infrastructure system providers, system integrators, service providers, road operators,
universities and research institutes could come together and develop the foundations of a world where
vehicles could talk to other vehicles and with road side infrastructure. The final goal is clear: safe,
efficient and pleasurable mobility with minimised impact on the environment.
A project with a somewhat strange acronym, CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems) was brought to
life, supported by the European Commission. Three years have passed since that day and through hard work,
sweat and tears, but a lot of fun as well, the project consortium has developed a blue print (architecture) for
the cooperative world, an open platform for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and
a set of reference applications which can be used to bring promised benefits to our daily lives.
Through CVIS Live! we proudly present to you the results from the joint work of more than 60 partners and we
hope that you will join us in our future efforts on reaching the promised land!
Come and touch the future with CVIS Live!

4. Cooperative Systems
Demonstration
CVIS project, together with the two other European Commission
supported integrated projects, SAFESPOT and COOPERS, are stepping up
a gear and are showcasing the latest results of the European research on
Cooperative Systems.
Let us show you how cooperation between vehicles and infrastructure
can improve…
• efficiency on the roads, leading to less congestion, lower fuel
consumption, and CO2 emissions
• safety, by informing each other of the potential hazards on the roads
and intersections
To reach the cooperative nirvana, we need to work together.
CVIS, SAFESPOT and COOPERS will showcase vehicles and infrastructures
from the different projects cooperating for the benefit of all.
The demonstrations will take place at the Cooperative Systems
demonstration area outside the eastern entrance of the Congress centre.

11. CVIS Application Innovation
Contest Award Ceremony
In order to demonstrate the true openness of its innovative architecture
and reference platform, CVIS launched the Application Innovation
Contest beginning of 2009.
The purpose of this contest was to make the ITS community aware of
the CVIS concept and demonstrate its possibilities by selecting the most
promising applications and supporting the contest-winning teams to
develop and present their applications at the ITS World Congress 2009 in
Stockholm. The Application Innovation Contest was open to all potential
Europe-based companies (public, private and individual) that are ready
to develop CVIS-compliant applications.
After the first assessment phase, 17 short-listed candidates and companies
were invited to develop their applications using the software development
kit provided by CVIS.
The following four applications have been selected by a jury panel
representing the automotive, infrastructure and services sectors, based
on the following:
• Look and feel of the applications
• Potential impact of the application (efficiency and/or safety impact)
• Innovative aspects of the application
• Compliance of the developed application with the CVIS system concept
Company Name Name of application
LodgON Wim De Munck Multi-modal Vehicle Social Networking (VSN)

13. CVIS at Intertraffic
Intertraffic Amsterdam is the world’s leading trade fair for the
infrastructure, traffic management, safety and parking sectors.
Launched in 1972 and celebrating its 20th edition in 2010, the event
attracts over 20,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. With
innovation being a prime ingredient, 800 global exhibitors present their
solutions and services for traffic related issues.
Concurrent with Intertraffic, the beautiful city of Amsterdam will also be
host to a brand new top notch showcase, focusing on vehicle-to-vehicle
and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication systems and based on the
final results achieved by the R&D projects CVIS, SAFESPOT and COOPERS,
supported by the European Union’s Sixth Framework programme of
research. The Showcase will comprise the i&CDrive exhibition, while the
European projects will present a variety of on-road demonstrations and
co-organise the international Cooperative Mobility conference featuring
VIP and executive speakers and world experts on cooperative systems.
For more information about both events, the preliminary conference
programme and an opportunity to register, visit the Intertraffic/
i&CDrive stand or go to www.icdrive.eu and www.intertraffic.com

14. Touch the future
CVIS is the most complete and most advanced ITS platform of today.
The developed platform, which was developed for research purposes,
is however cumbersome considering the size, power supply and
installation possibilities. Keeping the straight focus on deployment,
the CVIS family is taking a new step and aiming at the ground-breaking
CVIS2.0; a smaller and more integrated platform useful for Field
Operational Tests (FOTs) and pilot studies.
