During the WILD10 conference (10th World Wilderness Congress), my colleague Vlado Vancura was presenting PAN Parks and highlighted the importance of our verification process, which audits the management effectiveness of wilderness areas across Europe. This process makes PAN Parks the European Wilderness Watchdog. We have the unique expertise to check the existence of wilderness and advise protected areas how to improve management effectiveness This third-party evidence based verification is going to be the basis of our newly developed Wilderness Integrated Management (WIM, working title) system.

- Europeans are not valuing wilderness as much as they should! Our story Not long ago, Europe was a continent where free roaming animals and human lived in natural harmony. Our continent was shaped for millennia through dynamic natural processes. At that time floods, avalanches and fires were not broadcasted in the media as catastrophes. They drove the continuous natural cycles of forest and vegetation succession and were natural disturbances, which contributed to forming habitats. Natural events such as lightning or windstorm in a matter of moment changed circumstances and destiny of future development. That was wilderness, which could be described as unpredictable, spontaneous, and marvellous, in the process of constant change. It could have been defined as ‘WILDERNESS AT WORK’. The human influence on our landscape eventually led to a biodiversity crisis. Despite of some successful wildlife comeback there are a number of species still in a decline.
- Wilderness is extremely threatened resource. home to undiscovered species and provides refuge for endangered species. There is no successful wildlife comeback in Europe without the existence of areas where nature can develop on its own. Even highly adaptive and opportunistic species such as the brown bear or wolf need undisturbed areas for breeding and hibernation. For instance brown bears, which spread across the Carpathian mountains during mating season, tend to be in healthier, behave more naturally and has higher density in wilderness zones within the Tatra mountain during the winter hibernation
