Zoe Smith Music Magazine Market Research Analysis
1. MUSIC SURVEY RESULTS
The purpose of my market research is to collect statistics and information that I can use when
creating my music magazine. This research will help me to establish my target audience as well as
influencing the style and content that I put into my magazine. I used a primary research method to
collect information in the form of a survey. I sent this survey out via email to a number of
participants.
QUESTION ONE
What is your gender?
Male
Female
My results from this question show that just
over 80% of my respondents were females,
meaning the content I choose to include in my
magazine, such as genres, may need to be
slightly biased to a female audience. This
means I may need to include articles on genres
such as dance, pop and R&B, rather than more
male dominating genres such as rock and rap.
QUESTION TWO
What is your age?

What is your age?
The majority of my respondents were in the
youngest two categories, suggesting that the
target audience for my magazine will be
teenagers and young adults. This could
influence the style and contents of my
magazine as I will aim to create a fresh, young
vibe to attract the correct audience.
QUESTION THREE
What music genre do you
prefer?
Jazz
Metal
Rap
Pop
Rock
R'n'B
Indie/ Alternative
Dance
House
The results from this question show how
people are interested in lots of different
genres of music. The two most popular
genres turned out to be R’n’B and Indie.
Other popular genres were pop, house,
rap and rock. This mixture of results will
influence my magazine as I will have to
cater for fans of many different types of
music.

Which music
magazines do you
read?
From this question I found that a large
part of my respondents don’t read music
magazines. This has helped me as I can try
to include something new that other
magazines don’t feature to try and attract
a larger audience. The respondents that
did read magazines favoured Q, NME and
Billboard. I can use these magazines for
inspiration for my own magazine.
QUESTION FIVE
Where do you most often listen
to music?
Radio
Television
Internet
This question showed how MP3 players/
IPod’s are the most popular way that my
respondents listen to music, followed by
the internet. In my magazine I will include
information about the download of singles
and internet sites/apps such as 8tracks,
rather than including information about
television or radio channels.

The results for this question show how my
respondents are more likely to pay up to
around £2.99 for a music magazine. These
results are important as I can now plan to
make the price of my magazine affordable
for my respondents, making it as suitable
for my target audience as possible.
3. MUSIC SURVEY RESULTS
QUESTION SEVEN
What do you look for most
in a magazine?
This pie chart shows how the respondents
of my survey look for latest news,
interviews and posters in magazines more
than they look for other features such as
competitions. In my magazine I would
make sure I include as many as the
popular features as possible and include
less of the features that weren’t as
popular in my survey.
Posters
Competitions
Latest News
Interviews
QUESTION EIGHT
Where do you find out about
new music?
Magazines
Television
Radio
Internet
Friends
The results on this question show how
there are many popular ways that my
respondents find out about new music.
The internet was the most popular option,
followed by the television and friends. In
my music magazine I would include new
music that I have found from all these
options, favouring the most popular
options.
QUESTION NINE

artist information/tour details?

Where do you find out
about artist
information/tour
details?
My respondents find out details on
tour dates/information on artists
through mostly social networking
websites, such as Facebook and
Twitter as you can like or follow an
artist page. In my magazine I would
include information and tour details
so my target audience have new
ways of finding out this information.
4. MUSIC SURVEY RESULTS
QUESTION TEN
How often do you watch live
music?
I don't
Once a week
Once a month
Once every three
months
Once every six months
Once a year
These results show how most of
my respondents watch live music
around every 6 months. This may
be because artist tours can be
expensive. In my magazine I
would include details on popular
artists who are performing live
and then include details on up
and coming artists who may be
touring/performing for a lesser
price.
