As time has passed, more states have discussed Medicaid expansion, and in turn, more states have implemented the program. With its passage health insurance is being extended to 30 million Americans through two major mechanisms – the expansion of Medicaid and the public exchanges. Beginning in 2010 and extending into 2020 legislative guidelines are being followed for its massive implementation into society. In late 2013, we shared data from the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Status of State Action on the Medicaid Expansion Decision, highlighting the changes set to take place on January 1, 2014. We've updated the map to show the changes since the initial expansion. Adoption Since 1/1/2014: Michigan: 4/1/2014 New Hampshire: 8/15/2014 Pennsylvania: 1/1/2015 Indiana: 2/1/2015 Alaska: 9/1/2015 Montana: 1/1/2016 Louisiana Signed 1/12/2016, yet to take effect. States Considering Medicaid Expansion for 2017 South Dakota: South Dakota's Governor has announced his conditional support for the Medicaid expansion as part of his FY 2017 budget proposal. Virginia: Virginia's Governor has included Medicaid expansion as part of his FY 2017 budget proposal. Wyoming: Continuing discussion regarding Medicaid expansion. Governor advocating for expansion, Legislature considering proposals. States Not Moving Forward at This Time Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah Note: Wisconsin covers adults up to 100% FPL in Medicaid but did not adopt the ACA expansion.
