3. The Jobs and Salaries Primer - 2018
Preface
It was long overdue. But the salary growth of the kind we have all been looking forward to was always on the horizon. And it finally happened this year. Salary
growth went well over 10% across half of all the sectors the Jobs and Salaries Primer tracks, in 2017. Employees across all sectors have been treated to a
11.5% median salary increment, an unprecedented feat.
This, indeed, is a giant leap of faith for the Indian employer. In all of our analysis over the years employee skills seemed to have little bearing on their salaries.
So, from pay actions based on gut-decisions during the early 2000s, to analytically linking salaries to skills and performance during the 2010s, to handsomely
rewarding sought-after skills with a promising future, India has come a long way.
The jobless growth era is being disputed. There are strong voices on either side of the aisle but, be that discourse as it may, we at TeamLease have our 2020
vision clearly and firmly intact. The gig economy has emerged wiser and stronger with reality replacing hype. Artificial Intelligence is being seen to displace
tasks rather than entire jobs.
A cumulative 1.3 crore jobs will be created across the 17 sectors we track, over the next 4 years, and the forces of macroeconomy and disruptive technologies
are conspiring alongside rising consumerism to build these job numbers out. The fundamentals look strong and the talent market is primed for a spectacular,
long term, growth.
Hop in on the happy ride!

Definitions – Job Categories
We illustrate the job-demand space in terms of ‘Job Categories’ with a ‘Tree Map’, visualization. Job Profiles that best represent the trends in each industry have been identified and
categorized into ‘Longstanding’ jobs, ‘Hot’ jobs and ‘Upcoming’, or new, jobs.
‘Longstanding’ jobs are those that have been in existence for a fairly longer period of time than the other two job categories and are traditionally looked upon as those that define
the individual sectors. These form the conventional choices each of the sectors has to offer to candidates.
‘Hot’ jobs are the toast of industry and the job market, as implied by the buzz surrounding them, are the ‘flavour of the season’. As noted in the analysis ‘Hot’ jobs are not
necessarily the most rewarding of the three categories.
‘Upcoming’ jobs are the jobs of tomorrow. By definition, these are relatively more futuristic, feature newer skill attributes or are more skill-intensive, and often characterize new-
age industries.

17. The Jobs and Salaries Primer - 2018
Interpretations – Unified Industry Salaries
‘Unified’ salaries are single, aggregated, salaries across temporary and permanent jobs.
The ‘unified’ salary numbers are accompanied by a ‘variance’, a measure of the percentage by which the salary number for each of the profiles varies between temp and perm roles.
How to Read statistics off the Salary tables
Salary statistics comprise a salary number at the profile-city-experience level and variance at the Profile-city level. For each profile, read salaries on the row on top against the profile name
and variance on the bottom row against the profile name.
Example (please refer to the image on top): A 3.70% variance for ‘Cashier’ with a 2 – 5 years’ experience and a median salary of Rs.17,100 means that the salaries for this profile may vary
between Rs.16,467 and Rs.17,733.
