Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried both maps and compasses as well as a great love for Martha that often distracted him from his duties. While daydreaming about Martha and wondering if she was a virgin, one of Cross's soldiers, Ted Lavender, was shot and killed while going to the bathroom. Overcome with guilt, Cross burned the pictures and letters from Martha in an attempt to prevent further distractions and be a better leader to his soldiers.
