2. Preview and outcomes:
This presentation will describe how personal web
technologies (PWTs) can be used by learners and the
relationship between PWTs and connectivist learning
principles. Several technologies including social
bookmarking tools, personal publishing platforms,
metagators and aggregators are also included in this
presentation.
With these tools, individual can create and manage
personal learning environments (PLEs) and personal
learning networks (PLNs), which have the potential to
become powerful resources for academic, professional,
and personal development.

3. Presentation outline :
1. Brief introduction about personal web technologies
(PWTs), how to maximise PWTs
2. The type of PWTs
3. Learning application of PWTs
4. Challenges using PWTs

4. What is PWTs :
PWT is “customized, personal web-based environments
.... that explicitly supports one’s social, professional,
learning and other activities via highly personalized
windows to the networked world”
(The 2009 Horizon Report)

5. Maximise PWTs for
connectivism & continuous
learning :
Visualization of a web-based PLE “If individuals can
sufficiently develop
their ability to find,
organize, and
manage these
connections, their
available knowledge
does not have to be
limited by the
confines of their
own skulls.”
(McElvaney & Berg,
2009)

Linear Learning, a Teacher selects and presents
the content to the students. Barriers? Filter the
content to avoid misleading information

using PWTs for Learning

13. Discussion
1. What other disadvantages using PWTs in learning
(for teachers and students)?
2. Which learning method is better for teaching, is it
linear or non-linear? Give reason!
3. Many students know about the PWTs, however
they do not really know the potential and the
benefit from the deep learning of PWTs, what do
you (as a teacher) think to solve this problem?

14. Conclusion
When learners adopt personal web technologies, it
enables and requires them to discard their roles as
passive consumers of information and to take on new
roles.
While teachers and trainers can encourage the use of
PWTs and aid in the development of the related skills
needed to use them, the true quality and effectiveness
of a PLE or PLN depends on the learner him/herself. For
self-directed, critical-thinking individuals, personal web
technologies present a range of new learning
possibilities.

This social bookmarking sites allow you to save web pages, articles, and other media and organize them in personally meaningful ways.Connotea and Zotero are tools that usually used for academic research (manage reference and generate citations).
Personal Publishing tool is user friendly tool that usually free and allows you to build your own web page and publish it on the internet. However, blogs is more than online diaries. Camplese (2009) proposes that blogging be used to create and individualized content management system that publishes, organizes, and archives an on-going activity feed of a student’s learning.
Aggregators refers to a web site or computer software that combines a specific type of information from multiple online sources.
Metagators is also called portals or start pages, can aggregate feeds, social networks and widget to create a central, personalized location for an individual’s internet usage (Morton, 2008). You can choose your own home screen by selecting a criteria that you interested in.
Students know about PWTs, but they do not really know about the potential and the benefit from the deep learning of PWTs
Connection addiction – Increasingly connected to the virtual world, actually you are disconnected to your “real world” (family and friends)Work Interrupted – Don’t realize that you are wasting more time for checking new articles, status updatesPopularity contests – Possibility for some well-known individuals to dominate online discussion by gathering their followersEcho Chambers - Any forum for communication in which all members agree with everyone else (need diversity)Privacy & Security contents - Personal publishing tools have the potential to make people vulnerable by criticism and harassment from the commenters, Individuals who work with sensitive information must make sure their use of PWTs does not constitute a security risk for themselves, or for their organization
