There was a 60% increase in video consumption trends globally in 2020
In 2021, 79% of companies hosted hybrid events and 76% don’t see their video consumption slowing down post-pandemic.
Finally, 91% say the pandemic has made video more important to their brand.
Importantly, more people with disabilities are accessing video than ever.
So what does accessibility look like in 2022?
There are 48 million people in the united states and 430 million people globally that are Deaf or HOH.
There are 24 million people in the US that are blind or low vision. Globally, that number is 253 million.
There is $1.2 trillion in annual disposable income from people with disabilities is missed when we don’t make content accessible.
What does a compliant video look like?
There is legal precedent under the ADA that says captions must be highly accurate. This means automatic captions aren’t sufficient for compliance anymore.
It’s a liability to not have accessible video, this is demonstrated by over 2,000 web accessibility lawsuits in the last year. To work towards compliance, you need to abide by WCAG 2.0 Level AA, which includes live captioning, closed captioning, audio description, and transcription.
Why should you caption your video? Other than captions being so awesome.
As I just mentioned, accessibility is a legal requirement but the benefits of video accessibility go way beyond legal compliance.
It can help with brand recall. A study by Verizon Media and Publicis saw a 13% increase in brand linkage from videos with captions.
Captioning helps capture attention, with 80% of caption users not identifying as deaf or hard of hearing. (Ofcom)
People with disabilities make up a huge amount of spending power, I mentioned that stat before about more than a trillion dollars in spendable income here that you’re missing out on by not making video accessible.
In the same study by Verizon Media and Publicis, over 50% of consumers expect to find captions on videos and 80% Of consumers are more likely to watch a video if captions are available.
Beyond capturing attention, studies show that there is a 28% Increase in transferability of information when using captions. This can be very helpful in educational settings.
