There are many reasons why you may need to see an
emergency dentist. These short slides will give you some basic
information on some of the more common reasons. If you are
unsure always reach out to the dentist. Teeth do not grow back
(unless they are baby teeth) and infection in your mouth can
spread very quickly to the rest of your body.

Tooth Partially Out
● Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
● Take an over the counter pain reliever if needed

Knocked Out Tooth
● Save the tooth
● Rinse tooth holding it by the root – do not scrub or remove any attached
tissue
● If possible put tooth back in the socket – If not possible put it in milk

possible. Teeth are most often saved are those that the dentist has seen and
put back within an hour of the accident

Lost Filling
● Fill the hole with dental cement or sugarless gum
● Take an over the counter pain reliever if needed

Chipped or Broken Teeth
● Save any pieces
● Rinse mouth – if there is bleeding apply gauze until bleeding stops
● Apply a cold compress to check to relieve swelling and pain

Mouth Injuries
● Injuries to your tongue, gums, lips and cheeks will bleed.
● Rinse with warm salt water
● Place a piece of gauze or a used tea bag to the bleeding area for 10 15
minutes
● Use a cold compress to reduce swelling, stop bleeding and ease the pain
● If the bleeding does not stop, use gauze until you can see a dentist.

Lost Crown
● Until you can see the dentist use oil of clove applied to the area to reduce
pain
● Save the crown

Abscess
● An abscess is an infection around the root of teeth. Infection can spread
quickly through your body
● Rinse with warm salt water until you can get to the dentist
● See your dentist or an emergency dentist as soon as possible.
