3. Snapchat
■ Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app used globally and created by Evan Spiegel,
Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown.
■ When Snapchat was first created it was a playful app of a mobile-obsessed teen and
young adult group who were drawn to disappearing messaging and the candid feel of
communication. But, over the years Snapchat has grown significantly to where there is
roughly 158 million users daily. From 2015-2016 usage among over-35-year-olds had
increased by 224% which is a very big increase and this demonstrated to the creators
how the popularity for the app was increasing in such as short time. With this all being
said Snapchats revenue is $824.9 million USD.
4. Snapchat - purpose
■ Snapchat is a mobile messaging service that is mostly used to send temporary photos,
videos, texts and drawings to other people. As you have already read the creators are
Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy who designed and produced the product back in
September of 2011.With Snapchats recent updates the application allows you take
pictures and videos with a timer so that you are able to decide whether or not you
want the photo or video to be seen for a long period of time or a short period of time.
But Snapchats profit spiked by introducing face emoji's that would mold to the
individuals face helping them to make interesting expressions and giving them more
options to get creative with, when taking a photo or video.
5. Snapchat - content
■ Snapchat is definitely one of the most used social media applications that is on the app
store right now and with 158 million users daily, Snapchat is well on its way to
becoming the top media application in the world. If the amount of users wasn't good
enough, Snapchat in 2015 released an update that changed the way people interact
and use Snapchat. On this update, Snapchat introduced the “streak” and this allowed
millions of people to collect how many consecutive days they would have Snapped for
and record the number of conversations that have been had by two people. By doing
so it is a great way to get more people to interact with others and make friends while
having a sense of achievement. Furthermore, with another update Snapchat has
added new and interactive ways to obtain the users curiosity. One of these ways is
adding something called Spectacles which was a new and innovative way to take
photos and videos from a new perspective.
6. Snapchat -Target audience
■ Demographics wise Snapchat has more female users than male users and a reason for
this may be one of Snapchat's additions which is to use filters when taking a photo. An
example of a filter would be the “dog filter” and this allows the user, most likely to be a
female, to make themselves look more attractive and add more mystery behind the
photos and videos that are taken.Additionally, one of Snapchat’s statistics is that 71%
of users are under the age of 34 and this connotes that the majority of Snapchat users
are of the younger generation. This would then lead Snapchat to apply updates that
appeal to the younger generation so that the applications popularity would then
increase. This would then lead me to believe that Snapchat’s socio-economic status
would be placed into Group E and this is due to the majority of users being low income
workers and students which applies to the statistics that the majority of users are
under the age of 34.
https://www.omnicoreagency.com/snapchat-statistics/
7. Source of Revenue
■ Snapchats current revenue is 824.9 million USD which is a substantial amount of
money and this is due to the fact that Snapchat have added new and fun filters. This
helps to depict how companies would then be able to customize so that they can
promote new music and other products being released. As you may already know
Snapchat has a vast amount of daily users and certain company would be able to
promote their products and obtain a profit. However according to the time and day
the prices can vary depending of the filter. Similarly, advertisement would need to
appeal to the younger generation and this would is achieved through the production
of mini-games that would be planted within the application. Because of this, most of
the companies profit would be collected through the younger generation so they
would have to ensure that the advertisement appeals to the younger generation the
most in order to obtain the most profit.
8. Snapchat – legal and ethical
issues
■ Over the course of Snapchats popularity it has had a large variety of views and this would be
due to the fact that the application allows users to contact each other all the time.Through
doing so the application can expose multiple people by making them fall victim to private
information and expose them to explicit content.
■ The data protection act allows the all the personal information that the user has to be kept
private and out of someone else's hands. This is very important when referring to businesses,
organizations and the government as they would not be able to read or view any personal
information, photos or videos that you have taken, but instead they are shown only what is
needed to be shown.
■ Copyright is a very important issue that could result in protecting the authors work so that it
cannot be copied and used under another authors name. This copyright includes all the
content in the magazine from images to the facts that have been researched. A watermark
also helps with the magazines copyright issue and this is due to how specific and complex
the icon is.This icon can be seen as the magazine will have this icon and it will have a
plethora of colors that can only be detected by a reflected light.
■ Drugs and other ‘illegal’ substances being displayed publicly to an audience who do not
wish to see the images will course multiple problems as many people would not want drugs
to be promoted to other users of the application such as children. An example of this would
be a famous rapper or actoractress that display drugs to millions of people such as children
who will then think about taking the drugs themselves coursing large amount of problems.
10. Instagram
■ Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social media network service that is owned by
Facebook. Its creators are Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger who launched Instagram
publically in October of 2010 on IOS.
■ Its been 7 years since the launch of Instagram and from 2010 the social media network
has taken the world by storm. Its been said that 28% of US students use Instagram and
75% of the app’s are user based. Although, outside of education the network has more
than 700 million active monthly users. With this substantial amount of users the
Instagram is no longer a personal use platform but instead it is a full-fledged, global
platform that allows brands to humanize their content with millions of users a month.
11. Instagram - purpose
■ Originally, Instagram was not all about sharing pictures of
peoples lives and what friends were doing perhaps next week,
but instead it was about checking in when at a different
location in the world and hanging out with friends in order to
earn points. With this said Instagram's original name was
‘Burbn’ and the reason for this was that one of the owners
named Kevin Systrom was a large fan of Kentucky whiskey.
Due to the obsessive photo sharing of friends and family both
the owners, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, decided to make
the application a photo sharing application. With this new
change the Instagram that you know today was made in
October of 2010.The success of this new Instagram lead to the
application making 1 Billion dollars in the first 1½ years which
is a substantial amount of money in such a short amount of
time.
12. Instagram - content
■ Instagram allows for many different camera effects and
boarders to use so that the users are able to get the most out
of every photo or video that is taken. But in 2016 there was a
large demand for Instagram to add a live streaming section so
that the users would be able to chat with friends and you
would be able to see what your favorite celebrity and/or idol
was doing at a certain time or day.
■ Over the ears Instagram has found multiple ways to input
different features and effects in order to keep the users
interested and help them stay in contact with their creativity
side. The options include going live, boomerang, super-zoom,
rewind, hands-free and stop-motion. the Boomerang effect
for example allows the user to take a handful of photos and
play them forwards and backwards like a mini animation that
can leave mystery or surprise the viewer.
13. Instagram –TargetAudience
■ Similar to Snapchat I decided to use Omnicore in order to find out Instagram's
statistics towards their target audience. It is evident that 59% of Instagram users are
aged between 18 and 29 and 33% of internet users being aged between 30 and 49.
Instagram was bought by Facebook in 2012 and this allowed the users of Facebook to
move onto an application so that they would be able to message their friends and
share pictures/videos a lot easier. Instagram currently have 1 billion monthly users and
more than 40 billion photos have been uploaded since the application was made.
Because of this I would place Instagram in the socio-economic group of E and the
reason for this is due to the fact that most of the users are young but there are still a
lot that are earning more than working class people leaving the argument that some
people would place Instagram in the group C1.
14. Source of Revenue
■ Instagram has developed a way to to advertise new
products and promote businesses. They do this by
having businesses operate on the application so that
millions of people are able to view the business every
hour. The prices for the advertisement can vary
depending on when the advertisement was put up and
how long for.As Instagram Is currently being operated
by 800= users it allows third parties to intercept
charging thousands in order advertise and therefore
increase their sales and levels of engagement with the
users . Furthermore, the advertisement on Instagram
acts as any other account leaving the users to decide
whether they want to know more about the different
business or if they simply want to view what its about.
15. Instagram’s Legal and Ethical issues
■ Ever since 2013 Instagram has obtained a large amount of popularity and
because of this the Application requires specific policies in order to keep
everyone's information safe. Some of the policies are listed below:
■ The data protection act allows the all the personal information that the
user has to be kept private and out of someone else's hands. This is very
important when referring to businesses, organizations and the
government as they would not be able to read or view any personal
information, photos or videos that you have taken, but instead they are
shown only what is needed to be shown.
■ Copyright is a very important issue that could result in protecting the
authors work so that it cannot be copied and used under another authors
name. This copyright includes all the content in the magazine from images
to the facts that have been researched.
■ A watermark also helps with the magazines copyright issue and this is due
to how specific and complex the icon is.This icon can be seen as the
magazine will have this icon and it will have a plethora of colors that can
only be detected by a reflected light.
■ Drugs and other ‘illegal’ substances being displayed publicly to an
audience who do not wish to see the images will course multiple problems
as many people would not want drugs to be promoted to other users of
the application such as children. An example of this would be a famous
rapper or actoractress that display drugs to millions of people such as
children who will then think about taking the drugs themselves coursing
large amount of problems.
17. Twitter
■ Twitter is a ”micro blogging” media platform that allows the general public to
comment, post videos and message people all over the world.
■ In fact, sinceTwitter was first designed and created it was very compatible with mobile
phones through text messages, each update limited to 140 characters. Another way to
think about it is thatTwitter is a cross between instant messaging and a chat room,
because it is a open forum, but you restrict it to the people with which you connect.
The company has reported having $87 million in data licensing and other non-
advertising revenue and this has then lead to a net profit of $91.1million.
18. Twitter – Purpose
■ Twitter is a company that funds the majority of
their profits through running businesses (founders,
employees and more). The application allows you
to exchange photos and videos as well as message
other users such as friends.Twitter is one of the
most popular social networking services in the
world allowing users to microblog and message
where ever they might be.Twitter was founded in
2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, EvanWilliams
and Biz Stone. Over the years the network has
gone from a couple thousand users in 2006 to and
estimated 645 million users in 2014.With this large
amount od users the network approximately
determines that 58 million tweets are sent per day.
19. Twitter - Contents
■ Twitter has a very simple but effect color scheme and this helps the website and the
application to standout and look professional. It also helps the website to guide users
to different features so that they are able to experience the website to its maximum
ability.Additionally,Over the years ofTwitters existence the applications layout has
consistently remained the same which is a blue and white color scheme as well as
having most of the features such as the search tab in the same place so that users are
able to use the features easily. If the application wasn't successful enough,Twitter
allowed the users to obtain a notification when one of their friends messages them or
Twitter wants to inform the user of something.
20. Twitter -TargetAudience
■ After using the data that I collected from
Omnicore it is clear that 24% of users onTwitter
are male and only 21% of users onTwitter are
female. The Male users are more likely to use
the website and application in order to
support/run a business whereas the female
users share information that is a lot more
personal to them revealing their personal lives.
Furthermore, 37% ofTwitters users are aged
between 18 and 29 meaning that the features
thatTwitter includes should be aimed towards
this target audience in order to obtain the
largest amount of profit.
21. Twitter – source of Revenue
■ The majority ofTwitters profit would be
through advertisement and traffic.Twitter
having 335 million active users depicts how
successful and how the capability to
generate revenue is so great. Having the
advertisement engaging is a large part of
Twitters profit as it demonstrates that the
advertisement would attract the readers
attention and cause them to download and
use the application daily. Due to such a large
amount of users every month and a value of
16 Billion I have to say thatTwitters
advertisement is one of the most successful
in the world and I am sure thatTwitter will
continue to attract users in the future to
come.
22. Twitter - Legal and Ethical issues
■ Twitters popularity has had a large variety of views over the past few years
and this would be due to the fact that the application allows users to contact
each other all the time and anytime.Through doing so the application can
expose multiple people by making them fall victim to private information
and expose them to explicit content that they may want to see.
■ The data protection act allows the all the personal information that the
user has to be kept private and out of someone else's hands. This is very
important when referring to businesses, organizations and the government
as they would not be able to read or view any personal information, photos
or videos that you have taken, but instead they are shown only what is
needed to be shown.
■ Copyright is a very important issue that could result in protecting the
authors work so that it cannot be copied and used under another authors
name. This copyright includes all the content in the magazine from images
to the facts that have been researched. A watermark also helps with the
magazines copyright issue and this is due to how specific and complex the
icon is.This icon can be seen as the magazine will have this icon and it will
have a plethora of colors that can only be detected by a reflected light.
■ Drugs and other ‘illegal’ substances being displayed publicly to an
audience who do not wish to see the images will course multiple problems
as many people would not want drugs to be promoted to other users of the
application such as children. An example of this would be a famous rapper or
actoractress that display drugs to millions of people such as children who
will then think about taking the drugs themselves coursing large amount of
problems.
23. Social media Platforms- Pros and cons
Advantages Disadvantages
Snapchat • Connects users worldwide
• Has many creative features to attract the
users attention
• has a number of filters to enhance the
users appearance.
• Users are able to share information and
photos with other users.

option to have this is optional having the
possibility of it could be unsafe.

be viewed for.
Instagram • Privacy option allowing the user to decide
who can see their media
• Provides photo enhancement filters so
that the users can improve an image.

devices other than on an application.
• Limitation to a users posts.

frustrating the users.
24. Social effects – Noam Chomsky
■ Noam Chomsky believes that peoples normal
interactivity is dangerous and this due to the fact
that if you are friends with a user on Instagram or
Snapchat it could lead to spiteful and hate
comments in real life. This would be due to how
there are only two ways to interact with friends
and that’s on social media and in real life. This
ideology plays a huge part in todays society and
can lead to someone being bullied because of a
social media barrier leading to improved
confidence in real life.
■ I am worried that people in todays society prefer
to be interested in users on social media rather
than focusing on themselves and the other
around them.
25. Primary research
■ I will now be conduction primary research that will be
completed by a random population of people. The idea is that
I will be able to analyze the effects of social media on people
in todays society. I will then be comparing it to how it
destroys peoples social behaviors in real life and why.
26. Survey feedback
The majority of the people that answered the questionnaire were aged as teens or below and this
allows me to determine the social media demographics. By doing so I am now able to identify
what social media platforms were most popular and how it related to the age range.
27. Survey feedback
Looking a the results it is clear that the majority of people prefer Snapchat leading with 64% and
the second contender was Instagram with 27% and finallyTwitter with only 9%.With these
results I let the people answer a question on which danger they thought was a problem with
their social media. Looking at the results it seems as if most people think that bullying and social
pressures are the most dangerous when it comes to social media.
28. Secondary research
■ In my secondary research section I will be finding out more
about the social media platforms that I have researched, I will
try to include similar research from my primary research and
my secondary research.
29. Snapchat app store review
As you can see Snapchat’s application was a very popular and fun social media platform but looking at this
review it is clear that after a recent update was included more negativity has been evident due to the
application new layout and use of features. Originally, Snapchat was a fun to use application that allowed
users to easily activate the features and inspire creativity in peoples minds. Personally I believe that the
update is still fitting and appeals to me, however I also believe that it is even more fitting to larger users such
as celebrities and news publishers. The reason fro this is due to the fact tat the application now allows
celebrates and news publishers to distribute their content on a larger scale in an attempt to obtain more
followers and increase popularity.
30. InstagramApp store review
Looking at the rating of the application alone it is clear to see that the majority of users enjoy the
application and are happy to use it. However, looking at the review the user is clearly demonstrating
that even with a stable Wi-Fi connection the application has problems occurring such as users stories
and images not fully loading. After reading this review I can personally relate as I have experienced
the problem but I personally don’t think it is as big of a problem as this use is making it.The
application with recent updates allows the users to change and filter their images and videos so that
they will appeal to other users and therefore increase the users popularity.
31. Technological convergence
■ LadBible is an example of an account that allows multiple users to access their content
in order to entertain or inform them of information.Accounts like this try to appeal to
a large target audience but most commonly end up attracting the majority of the
younger generations. In order to do this the content tends to be comedic so that the
account is able to attract the attention of as many people as possible. To stay up-to-
date the viewers can follow the account to see all the latest news and content.
32. Advertising
Whenever, a company wants to advertise an application it is
important that they maximize their revenue in order to obtain as
much money as possible through their users. In order to create an
application that does this the company would need to work directly
with the application developer in order to make the application
effective and affordable to the public. By doing this the company is
increasing their chances of creating a useful application that will
attract the attention of as many people as possible.
Applications such as Instagram can also claim money through
advertising on their application. This can be done through other
companies realising that an application is popular and used often.
Because of this the company will therefore pay money in order to
advertise their products on the application which may be seen by
thousands of users which will help to promote their product.
https://buildfire.com/free-app-promotion/
33. Viral Marketing
■ Viral marketing is when consumers are encouraged to share information such as a video or
photo about a companies goods or services via the internet. Companies such as Instagram,
Snapchat and twitter use viral marketing through campaigns in order to encourage more
consumers to use their applications and products. Because ofViral marketing, companies
are able to expand their products content on a larger scale by allowing more consumers to
see the content in a reasonably short amount of time. An example of this would be the
“Ultra reality LGTV” as the company used an interesting and comedic video in order to
advertise theirTV’s.They did this by pranking unsuspecting people with a fake meteorite
hitting the earth surface. Due to the comedic idea the video went viral at a wildfire like rate
helping the advertise LG’sTV’s.
