R&b history
1. R&B: The Origins
R&B is a genres that incorporates elements of rhythm and blues, soul,
funk, hip hop and dance. It began at the end of the disco era when
artist like Michael Jackson and Quincy jones added electronic to the
black music of the time to make it more dance floor friendly. Later on
other artists added many more elements to create the genre. Artists
began to add a lot more hip hop into their work this died down and
became less popular during the end of the 1990’s however resurged.
During the 2000’s the genre became hugely successful next to hip hop
and artists associated themselves as both hip hop and R&B artists.
Currently R&b is enormous and has more supersonic elements than
ever. Each Artist has their own unique style which is possible due to
the diversity of the genre this I also why its so popular due the range
of the target audience drastically increases as new artists introduce
their own twist and style on R&B.
2. R&B: Artists & Albums over the years
The legends of R&B are artist like
Michael Jackson and Quincy jones
who helped to establish the genre
by adding electronic elements to
their music. The introduction of
R&B, the first song I the R&B genre
was called ‘off the wall. In 1979
During the 1990s when R&B
began to grow artists like
Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson,
Michael Jackson, Usher and
Mariah Carey all influenced the
genre and picked up All time
best selling artist awards along
the way.
The 2000s is when R&B because huge
next to Hip Hop it was the most
popular genre of music. Artists like
Chris brown, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Alicia
keys and Beyoncé were huge in the
success of the genre. Mariah Carey
had many billboards top 100 no.1 hits
like ‘one sweet day’ and a remix of
‘fantasy’
The current day and R&B is massive with many
artists of all ethnicities and social groups
creating music which entertains all type of
audience around the world. This enormous
genre is global and one of the most successful
genres ever. The Weeknd, Post Malone,
Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer
Lopez, Tinashe and many more artists all
produce music enjoyed by millions
4. Cover Artists
My magazine would incorporate cover stars similar to current
day artist like The Weeknd, Rihanna, Chris Brown etc. this is
because the magazine would instantly be eye catching due their
amazing success and leadership in the R&B genre. Further more
the artists would represent the magazine perfectly as the genre
is so big and so are the artists it would be hard for audiences to
mistake the issue or not have any interest
5. Locations…
My R&B magazine covers have a blank background and no sign
of a certain location however for my magazine I'm going to go
against this by having my artist in dark location however it
wouldn’t be a very secretive spot it wold be more of an open
shot in a park. Locations where people would sit and reminisce
as R&B songs usually are about the past life or events of the
artists. The dim lighting also represents the dark upbringing of
artists who lived a dramatic life before reaching where they are
today. The dark is also where a lot of secretive things go down
from drugs, crimes, deals, sex etc. which is usually the main R&B
theme
6. Clothing
R&B is so popular and the
outfit/makeup of the cover stars is
very casual so it can be copied by the
millions of fans. This is why my cover
star will wear casual clothes that
aren’t overly priced however they
will not look scruffy the formality
also matters and represents the type
of magazine in a big way so although
the outfit may not be flashy it will be
formal and attractive. The make up
will not be too important as my cover
star will be male however
imperfections like spots, scars,
bruises will be covered so it isn’t
visible to make the artist and the
magazine attractive.
7. TV/Radio
Because R&B is enjoyed globally I would have recording
of my artists from both Europe and USA however because
my magazine is aimed at an English audience and the
artist all speak all speak English I would keep them to
English. Shows like Jonathan Ross, Alan Carr, The late
night show with Jimmy Falon. The magazine would also
have at least one cover line with quote from an artists
interview. Interviews allow audience to get to know their
favourite artists even more and also allows newer people
to find out new things about artists the just began to
listen to. This would attract the audiences attention as on
the main cover they would read cover lines and become
curious wanting to find out more and more.
