FMP- Planning and Production
Abbie Nicholls
Locations
• I am going to take all my photographs in North Yorkshire so that I do not have to travel too far as this would take up lots of
production time and cost lots of money. I need to plan all my shoots on the weather as I do not want images that are
intended to be bright and colourful be ruined by the rainy weather. This is a risk I will have to take with every shoot.
• I am going to focus on nature reserves for most of my shoots so that I can get wildlife, landscape, macro and nature shots. I
will visit Askham Bog because when I have previously visited, I have managed to successfully achieve different close up shots
of birds which will contribute to my project. The bog is extremely close to college therefore I do not need to pay for any
transport. However, I am limited at Askham Bog of when I can visit as in the wintertime there are no flowers or any colours
which will make my photographs seem very dull. To resolve this issue, I will plan my visit to the bog in the springtime. I also
visit Wheldrake Ings because it has lots of open space with a lake which means I will have great landscape shots. For the
majority of the locations, I will drive there with my team which means that it could result in a lot of money spent on petrol.
• I am also going to visit Castle Howard because they have a flower/rose garden which means that I can take all my macro
shots here. I will schedule my visit around the weather to ensure that all my macro shots are not ruined by rain or clouds. It
is relatively expensive to visit the gardens in Castle Howard therefore I need to ensure that I only visit the one time.
• Another location I will visit is the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. For this trip I will need a bigger lens as I have visited recently and
not achieved many close up shots. Once again, the park is expensive to enter so it needs to be just the one time that I go. It
will also cost a lot in petrol to go which is why all shots must be successful the first time. At the park once again I am limited
by the animals and the weather because some animals may be indoors. If the weather is really bad, then the trip will have to
be rescheduled. There is a high risk that I will not successfully photograph the animals because they are either too far away
or I do not have the correct lens with me. I must take this risk because the outcome will really improve my project.
• I will also use the studio at college to get any portrait shots. If there are any issues I can easily ask a tutor for help. For
example, if the equipment stops working or I am unsure how to correct the lighting, I can just ask for help.
• Overall, I am going to be using a range of different locations that amount to a high cost: however if I plans all my shoots
correctly based on the weather it will be worth it. These are not the only locations that I am going to use: for some images I
will drive to the countryside to get better landscape shots etc. It all depends on the photographs that I get from the
appropriate locations.
Finance
• There are not many facilities or equipment that I will need to hire because I have my own camera
equipment that I can use for the project. I have my own Canon 1300D camera with an alternate lens that
ranges from 70mm-200mm. I have also recently purchased a tripod for this project so I will not need to
hire one. However, during this project I would like to hire a macro lens so that my macro photography can
be high quality and look as professional as possible.
• For the majority of the shoots, my colleagues will drive to the location which will cost a lot in petrol. To
ensure I am not spending too much money I will take a sufficient amount of images so that I do not have
to revisit. However, for some locations I may have to take public transport which can be unreliable and
difficult to carry all my equipment.
• The crew for this project is small. I do not want to disrupt my friends from working on their own projects.
Therefore I am going to have Sophie Grantham helping me throughout the project acting as my model for
some of the work. My mum will visit most of the locations with me and help carry and set up equipment.
The crew are vital to my project because I will need help setting up the equipment and ensuring that I
have brought everything to the location. I will produce a check list for my different locations so that I can
make sure I forget nothing.
• I do not need to hire any equipment for this project except the the macro lens which is vital. I will also hire
out the studio so that I can take some portrait shots. I am unsure of how many times I will need to book
the studio or for however long but this can be organized closer to the time.
Equipment Check List
• I will bring this checklist with me to every photo-shoot so that I can ensure that no
equipment is left behind as this would delay production and cost lots of money.

Time
• We have around 2 months for production which means that I need to follow a schedule that will keep me
organized and have all my work completed on time to my best standards. During the first few weeks of
production I would like to focus on my photography and editing the images to the best of my ability.
Photography is the base of my products which is why they need to be high quality. After that I would then
like to focus on building the posters and making any corrections.
• Because I have my own equipment I do not necessarily need to worry about the availability. However, I do
need to think about booking out the studio and the macro photography lens as this is crucial to my work. I
am going to book out the macro photography lens for all my shoots so that I am prepared for any close up
shots. I will only need to book out the studio once, however I would like to leave a space free in my
schedule just in case the photographs do not turn out the way I hoped.
• Because the majority of my work will be produced away from college, I do not need to worry about the
availability of personnel. I need a model (Sophie Grantham) for only a few of my posters which means that
I can work around her product and find a time when she is free.
• In this project, I must follow strict time scales as I have a several weeks to produce my posters, however I
do not have much room to make mistakes. This is why I am going to produce a schedule so that I can
follow it closely and give myself some time to make corrections and improvements whilst not disturbing
other production time.
Production Schedule
Week of production Tasks
Week 8 • Choose to focus on films first and analyze the common themes. I will
focus on a specific theme in that film and try to portray it in my
photography style. I will create a mock up first to see how it will look.
• Visit different reserves and photo shoot locations.
• Week 8 and 9 are focusing on nature based photographs.
Week 9 • Build the 3 film posters by creating the background, colour scheme
and font. Edit my photographs.
• Have 3 posters almost ready for completion.
Week 10 • Choose to focus on 3 more films. Focus my photography style on
portraits as I struggle with this style the most and need more time.
• Book out the studio and take portrait shots.
• Week 10, 11 and 12 are focused on portrait photographs.
Week 11 • Begin following tutorials on how to manipulate the face, work on this
all week and at the start of week 12.
• Edit all portrait shots
Week 12 • Finish following horror tutorials and editing the images.
• Begin building the horror/portrait based posters.
Week 13 • Complete the portrait based posters.
• Focus on other styles of photography such as street or architecture as
I need more time on this.
• Create and finish styles of posters.
• Week 13 is focusing on street and other styles of photography. Could
perhaps lead into week 14.
Week 14 • Finish street style/architecture posters.
• Edit any changes on any of the posters that I am not happy with.
Personnel
• My team is going to be very small because I do not want to pull my friends away from their own work.
Sophie is going to model for some of the portrait shots and help me when driving to different shoot
locations so that she can help me carry and set up the equipment. Sophie is always working on her own
print production so she has a similar skill set to me. She knows a little bit about camera therefore she can
help me when alternating the lens etc. She has been on the course for 2 years therefore she has plenty of
experience working with cameras. Because she is also interested in photography, she can contribute
creative ideas to help improve my photography and change the shot type, colour scheme etc. Sophie is
also in my target audience (young adults). Furthermore she can give me feedback on my photography and
posters or my ideas to make them appeal and suit her more.
• However, having Sophie help me throughout this project may cause some issues with the schedule and her
availability as she has her own project to focus on. This means that I will have to meet with Sophie and
produce a schedule that will suit both of us without causing disruptions. Sophie can drive to all the
locations which means that we do not have to plan the shoots during college time. Although, it may cost
her a lot of money for petrol which is why I will try to only ask for her help when I desperately need it.
Facilities
• I have produced an equipment check list that helps me organize what equipment I need for what shoot. I
have my own Canon 1300d camera with an alternate lens that ranges from 70mm-200mm which means I
can successfully achieve close up shots just not macro style shots. For this style of photography I will need
to book a macro lens that ranges up to 300mm. This lens will primarily be used during the first and second
week that are based on the nature posters. I have also bought my own tripod which means that I do not
need to worry about booking one out. It is a full height tripod which means it will stabilize the camera
whilst I am taking macro photographs that are too difficult to take hand held due to the high shutter
speed. I will also need to use the studio for some of the portrait shots as it provides great adjustment
lighting. When I am going to any shoot, I will bring my equipment check list so that I do not forget any
equipment as I do not have time to make mistakes. On this list I have also included a fully charged back up
battery and a additional SD card so that I do not run out of space on the camera or the camera dies whilst I
am on the shoot. Finally, I have camera bags with me so that all the lens are protected as well as the tripod
and the camera itself.
• Once I have finished my shoots and have taken all the pictures necessary, I will then import them onto the
Mac. I will then pick my favourites and edit them on Photoshop. Photoshop has introduced to range of
different skills and techniques that I can apply to my photographs to make them as high quality as
possible. I will also use YouTube to follow tutorials which can expand my knowledge on Photoshop.
Materials
• There are several different materials and props that will be needed during this project. For most of the
photographs I depend on the wildlife and the weather; an example would be when photographing for
Little Miss Sunshine, I would like to photograph the sun with lots of flowers in a field. When shooting for
Black Swan, I would obviously need a black swan in the image. For the thriller/horror film posters I will
need fake weapons such as knives or guns for the model to be holding. I will also need a distressed
costume to portray the fear. For certain shoots, the models will have to wear vintage clothing depending
on when the film is set. I have not got specific outfits/costumes in mind or even specific props, however
once I have ideas on the photographs I can purchase these important items. Most purchases will be from
amazon because they can be delivered the next day and will not cost too much.
• In the project, I am debating about including graphics because this is a style of media I have not really
experimented with. Most minimalist film posters are graphically designed and are very creative. I want all
my posters to be photography based because this is what I enjoy the most and want to progress and
expand on. However, I would like to possibly experiment with some background graphics that are only
small details but fill empty space.
• For some of the shots I would like to have flowers in the studio so that I can have an empty background for
text. This means that I will need fake flowers as props whilst in the studio as there will be too much
background noise if they are taken outside.
Supply
• For some of my posters I need a model whether that be a portrait shot or just a shot over the shoulder. For
these specific shots I am going to use my friend Sophie Grantham.

Camera
• On my camera, I am going to always have it on the aperture priority setting because it is easy to change the
settings such as the shutter speed and exposure. You can also change the depth of field so that you can the object
in focus with a blurred background or have the full landscape in focus in a large f number. Framing will change
depending on the style of photography that I am working on. However, I will always follow the rule of thirds or the
Fibonacci scale. The Fibonacci scale means that the object is in the centre as this is where the eye is naturally
drawn to first. I will use the rule of thirds for wildlife, nature or landscape photography because it will help frame
the image and give it a good structure that is more appealing to the eye. The angle for nearly all of my
photographs will be eye level. I will sure to get low on the ground so that I can fit more of the
landscape/background into the frame. This influences the shot to be wider and much more interesting. All macro
shots will be taken from a high angle above so that the inside of the flower is exposed more which makes the
colour much more vibrant. I would like to take my wildlife photographs at eye level because this gives me access to
photograph more of the animals face. Furthermore, the wildlife is not portrayed as weak or having more power as
a shot would do taken from a high angle. The camera angle can be changed by adjusting the tripod to different
heights or angles which can help make the shot much more interesting. The tripod will also help detect no hand
held movement which shakes the camera and ruins the shot. The lighting plays a big part in the photograph
because it can easily be over exposed or too dark. I will always set up the camera and take a tester shot to view
the environment and make any adjustments before I begin shooting. If the lighting is too bright, I can change the
brightness on the camera by lowering it to -1 or do the same to increase. However, there is also a setting on
aperture priority where you can take the photos on a sunny effect or cloudy effect so that is can increase the
saturation and highlights to suit the environment better and result in a high quality image. Most of the shots will
be structured simply and basic as they are of landscapes or wildlife. However for some of the portrait shots, I
would like to experiment with shots over the shoulder to make them more appropriate to the audience.
Post Production
• All my posters are going to be produced in Photoshop: my photographs will also be edited in the same software. I
am comfortable working on Photoshop because this is the software that I have used for all of my projects. There
are some techniques and skills that I have watched on different tutorials that I am not so sure about and that need
more time working on. When editing my photographs, I always use the camera raw filter because this allows me
to change the saturation, colours, brightness and much more. I think that the filter increases the quality of my
images because of the clarity and vibrancy of colours. Another editing technique that I am comfortable using on
Photoshop is curves. I think that this helps bring out more depth in the images such as the shadows and
highlights. On the last project I focused a lot on the text on how to make it stand out more. I would like to
incorporate these techniques into the FMP such as spacing and drop shadows to make the title have more of an
impact.
• I have watched some tutorials that I would like to follow which challenge me to lots of new skills that I have never
seen on Photoshop before. This includes wrapping an image to blur two images together. Creating a horror poster
is very difficult because there is lots of work to do in the background such as different shades and patterns to look
like blood splattered. Because I am creating a range of different genre film posters, I need to watch several
different tutorials to make my project look as professional as possible. I need to learn how to create fantasy
backgrounds that seem dreamy and like magic so that there is a strong meaning of what the film symbolizes. The
main tutorials that I need to watch are the horror tutorials where you can manipulate the face as I found this very
hard in the experiments. The tutorials are only a small selection of videos I will follow: I will find more at the time
of production.

This is only a selection of films that I am going to create
posters for. I would like to include taglines on the poster
which are famous quotes from the film. I like this idea
because it gives the audience an insight into what the
film is about and whether it will interest them. These are
only a small selection of ideas and not taglines I am going
to necessarily use.
Design- Colour Scheme
For all colour schemes found, I used the website Coolors that helps find you bold and pastel colours that will
work best together. I liked using this website because it was easy to select my own colours and the website to
generate the connecting colours. For this project, I am not going to use a specific colour scheme because it will
vary across all my posters. For example, on the drama genre, I would like to follow the more neutral colour
scheme such as C4B1AE as it is simplistic and signifies the emotion in the film. A common colour scheme for the
action films is blue and yellow. I would like to follow this colour scheme because it is traditional but also
highlights the emotion and hidden themes/meanings in the film. I would like to follow all these colour schemes
as well as creating more when working on production as it depends on the photograph used on the poster with
what colour scheme correlates alongside. I will carry on using Coolors to find even more colour schemes as I want
there to be endless possibilities.
Design- Fonts
Throughout this project, I am going to be using a range of different fonts for each poster as it depends on the
genre of the film. For example, I can not use the same font for a horror poster as on a drama poster. Font plays
an essential part to the poster and on each poster I will use 3 different fonts: the title, the cast and the tagline.
These examples of fonts found will not be the only fonts that I use. All fonts will be downloaded from dafont.com
When researching for fonts, I found a selection that would work perfectly for specific films that I have in mind.

Design- Style Sheet/ Potential Ideas
• I have lots of different ideas that could be used for my posters. For example, for the film Lady Bird I want the
poster to be minimalistic and simple. It will include macro photography of lady bird which will be very simple. I do
not want to include any graphics on this poster design because I want it to be basic but effective.
• For Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind or Little Miss Sunshine I have the idea to photograph a landscape on a
sunny day to connect to the titles. I also want the landscape photographs to be quite simple: I will leave lots of
open space at the top of the image with a subject at the bottom or in the middle. This gives me room to include
the cast and the title at the top of the page. At the top of the landscape I will possibly include some graphics of
stars etc. This would work alongside films that are fantasy and sci fi such as Harry Potter.
• The Shape Of Water poster is going to be the most simplistic: it will include a photograph of water alongside the
title, tagline and cast.
• For Grease I am going to including some background graphics to make it look more retro and vintage as the film is
set in the 50s. The graphics would include grease drops or stains as well as the font being bold and eye catching. I
would like to take photographs in the studio for Grease for it to be more professional.
• All film posters will have taglines which are quotes from the film so that the audience has a small insight into what
the film is about. I think that my more creative ideas will happen when I am on the shoot coming up with
different ideas. One idea that I have is to take the photograph then draw over it on Photoshop so that it looks like I
have drawn the image in that detail and that it isn't a photograph.
• For the more universal film pictures I would such as Up I would like to photograph a landscape and then draw in
some graphic detail such as balloons or animals etc. This includes both art styles and will make the poster more
creative. It will also challenge me to a new skill set of drawing images into Photoshop and experimenting with
graphic design. One common design that is used for graphic design posters is that they are minimalistic and tend
to have a strong colour scheme based on one colour. I like this technique and would like to incorporate this into
my photography with a strong one colour background and a monochrome colour scheme. I would do this by
taking portrait or macro shots in the studio with a blue or red background. This block colour will help make the
posters look more artistic and creative.
Image Style- Macro
Macro photography is one of my favourite styles of photography because the camera picks up detail
that we can not even see. I think that it makes photography much more creative and influences the
photograph to be much more colourful. I have picked these pictures because these are the type of
images I would like to take for my project. For example, I would like to be able to take a macro
photograph of a lady bird for the film poster. I enjoy nature photography therefore mixing the two is
very appealing to me. Alessandro Zocchi is my favourite macro photographer because he focuses on
nature macro photographs as well as industrial macro photography which is what makes him so
creative. His images are such high quality that inspire me to want to achieve such great images.

Image Style- Landscape
David Noton
https://www.davidno
ton.com
Colin Prior
https://colinprior.co.uk
Landscape photography is going to be the most common style of photography featured on my posters. I really like
these two landscape photographers because the photos almost look panoramic: they are skinny and wide. The
colours are bright and eye catching which is what makes them stand out. I really like landscape photographs
because I think they are calming and natural: they have not been staged together. I would like to be able to
produce photographs of this quality.
Image Style- Nature & Wildlife
Tim Laman
photographs

mlaman.com/
Frans Lanting
http://lanting.
com
The two photographers that I have decided to focus on for nature and wildlife photography are Tim Laman
and Frans Lanting. These photographers are my favourite because they create images that are such high
quality and interesting and inspire me to achieve photographs on this level. Both photographers also
specialize in landscape photography and macro photography therefore experiment with all my favourite
styles. The colours are always so vibrant and such high quality. All of their photographs do not appear to be
edited too much which signifies that they have there equipment set up ready for the wildlife. I want my
photographs to look like this is my project however I do not have access to a high quality lens like either of
these artists. This work has definitely inspired me and influenced me to think of other locations where I may
find interesting wildlife and landscapes.
Image Style- Portrait
All these portraits were taken by the photographer Annie Leibovitz. She has photographed for magazines such
as Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. I really like this style of portrait because they are dramatic and really high
quality. The background is not just one solid colour which tends to be a common theme on portrait
photography. I think this helps bring the eye colour or the colour in their clothes. I would like to take portraits
like this because it is strong eye contact with the audience which means it would be easier to manipulate the
face on Photoshop. I would also like to take side shots and close ups of eyes to give more power and drama.
Layout Plans Idea 1
The first layout idea is to follow
traditional theatrical poster
methods. This includes the title
of the film at the bottom of the
poster with the cast along the
top of the photograph. The
photograph takes up the entire
poster and tends to have a
plain colour background which
is usually black or white. I like
this layout because it focuses
on the photography: it is the
main subject of the poster and
what grabs your attention.
However there are restrictions
as to what styles of
photography can be used when
following a layout like this: it
needs to be very simple with
no background noise. This
means that I could not do
landscape photography
however macro and portrait
shots would work.
There does not tend to be
much colour in the image itself;
the colour usually comes from
the text or graphics. I like this
technique because it would
challenge me to a new editing
technique where I would dull
down the colours instead of
brightening them and making
them more vibrant. Although, I
do not like this technique
because the audience is drawn
to the coloured parts first and
not the photograph which I
want to be the most important
element of my posters. I really
like the idea of the colourful
border which links to the
meaning of religion in the film
Lady Bird. I would also like to
include hidden meanings in the
form of graphics to challenge
me to new skills and improve
my poster quality.
I really like this layout because it focuses on
photography, however when I am taking
landscape or wildlife shots, it will have to be
a different layout.
Layout Plans- Idea 2
Image
Small background graphics
Main cast
Title
Small background graphics
This layout plan follows a similar
design to the previous layout
plan, however there is much
detail. Graphics have been
incorporated into this design
because there tends to be some
small background detail in the
theatrical posters that fill empty
space and make the background
much more interesting.
Encompassing graphics into my
work will challenge me to a new
skill set that I have not
experimented with before
therefore it could improve the
quality of my work. Some
graphics that I would like to
include would depend on the
genre and the film, however I
would like to draw graphics in
the sky and on the landscape
.For example, for a fantasy film I
could draw in stars and the
moon. I could also draw in
flowers, shadows of people or
blood into the bottom of horror
film posters.
The text is positioned in the
same places as the previous
layout plan except the title. In
theatrical releases the title
tends to be in the centre of
the image or at the top of the
poster. I do not like this
technique because I prefer the
title in the centre of the page
or near the bottom so that the
main focus is on the image and
the graphics not the text. I do
not have a preference on the
cast at the top or bottom
because I think it depends on
where there is the most room.
The poster is already detailed
with no empty space therefore
it cant be placed where it is
too crowded with graphics. I
would like to draw the
graphics and scan them in
because I think that it will
improve the quality of my
work.
Idea Generation
• A possible idea for this project would be to create a photography version of the poster and a graphic version so
that it highlights a range of techniques. The photography posters would be more detailed and the graphic
posters be minimalistic.
• This is my idea generation for the Perks Of Being A Wallflower:
• I want the picture to be of a flower that grows up the wall (a wallflower) as this will help frame the image and lead
the eye. It will be on the left hand side so that the middle and right side of the image is just bricks. Here I will fill
the space with the title, cast and tagline. I would like to change the ‘O’ in the title and digitally draw them as
flowers or suns to make the title more eye catching and unique. I would like the colour scheme to be yellow just
like the original because it will stand out amongst the flowers and the bricks.
• Idea Generation for Candy:
• A very simple photograph in the studio of a candy jar filled with sweets. In the middle of the jar there will be the
title of the film. I want this post to be minimalistic so this means there is little text. The photograph will be taken
in the studio on a beige background to influence the colours to stand out. An alternative idea for this would be to
digitally draw a candy jar that is full of drugs as the film is about drug addiction and then scan it into Photoshop.
• Idea Generation for The Shining:
• Graphically I could draw a type writer with the iconic slogan coming out on the page. Underneath I would include
the title. There would be a block colour background to make the work look similar to Saul Bass.
• A photography version of this would be photographing a type writer in the studio with the same slogan on the
page with a dull beige backdrop. Alternatively, I could photograph lightening so that it is like a strong bold light in
the landscape.

Fmp planning and production 2

  • 1. FMP- Planning and Production Abbie Nicholls
  • 2. Locations • I am going to take all my photographs in North Yorkshire so that I do not have to travel too far as this would take up lots of production time and cost lots of money. I need to plan all my shoots on the weather as I do not want images that are intended to be bright and colourful be ruined by the rainy weather. This is a risk I will have to take with every shoot. • I am going to focus on nature reserves for most of my shoots so that I can get wildlife, landscape, macro and nature shots. I will visit Askham Bog because when I have previously visited, I have managed to successfully achieve different close up shots of birds which will contribute to my project. The bog is extremely close to college therefore I do not need to pay for any transport. However, I am limited at Askham Bog of when I can visit as in the wintertime there are no flowers or any colours which will make my photographs seem very dull. To resolve this issue, I will plan my visit to the bog in the springtime. I also visit Wheldrake Ings because it has lots of open space with a lake which means I will have great landscape shots. For the majority of the locations, I will drive there with my team which means that it could result in a lot of money spent on petrol. • I am also going to visit Castle Howard because they have a flower/rose garden which means that I can take all my macro shots here. I will schedule my visit around the weather to ensure that all my macro shots are not ruined by rain or clouds. It is relatively expensive to visit the gardens in Castle Howard therefore I need to ensure that I only visit the one time. • Another location I will visit is the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. For this trip I will need a bigger lens as I have visited recently and not achieved many close up shots. Once again, the park is expensive to enter so it needs to be just the one time that I go. It will also cost a lot in petrol to go which is why all shots must be successful the first time. At the park once again I am limited by the animals and the weather because some animals may be indoors. If the weather is really bad, then the trip will have to be rescheduled. There is a high risk that I will not successfully photograph the animals because they are either too far away or I do not have the correct lens with me. I must take this risk because the outcome will really improve my project. • I will also use the studio at college to get any portrait shots. If there are any issues I can easily ask a tutor for help. For example, if the equipment stops working or I am unsure how to correct the lighting, I can just ask for help. • Overall, I am going to be using a range of different locations that amount to a high cost: however if I plans all my shoots correctly based on the weather it will be worth it. These are not the only locations that I am going to use: for some images I will drive to the countryside to get better landscape shots etc. It all depends on the photographs that I get from the appropriate locations.
  • 3. Finance • There are not many facilities or equipment that I will need to hire because I have my own camera equipment that I can use for the project. I have my own Canon 1300D camera with an alternate lens that ranges from 70mm-200mm. I have also recently purchased a tripod for this project so I will not need to hire one. However, during this project I would like to hire a macro lens so that my macro photography can be high quality and look as professional as possible. • For the majority of the shoots, my colleagues will drive to the location which will cost a lot in petrol. To ensure I am not spending too much money I will take a sufficient amount of images so that I do not have to revisit. However, for some locations I may have to take public transport which can be unreliable and difficult to carry all my equipment. • The crew for this project is small. I do not want to disrupt my friends from working on their own projects. Therefore I am going to have Sophie Grantham helping me throughout the project acting as my model for some of the work. My mum will visit most of the locations with me and help carry and set up equipment. The crew are vital to my project because I will need help setting up the equipment and ensuring that I have brought everything to the location. I will produce a check list for my different locations so that I can make sure I forget nothing. • I do not need to hire any equipment for this project except the the macro lens which is vital. I will also hire out the studio so that I can take some portrait shots. I am unsure of how many times I will need to book the studio or for however long but this can be organized closer to the time.
  • 4. Equipment Check List • I will bring this checklist with me to every photo-shoot so that I can ensure that no equipment is left behind as this would delay production and cost lots of money. Equipment Yes/No Canon 1300D Macro Lens (300mm) Alternate Lens (70mm- 200mm) Tripod Camera Bags Back Up SD Card Back Up Fully Charged Battery
  • 5. Time • We have around 2 months for production which means that I need to follow a schedule that will keep me organized and have all my work completed on time to my best standards. During the first few weeks of production I would like to focus on my photography and editing the images to the best of my ability. Photography is the base of my products which is why they need to be high quality. After that I would then like to focus on building the posters and making any corrections. • Because I have my own equipment I do not necessarily need to worry about the availability. However, I do need to think about booking out the studio and the macro photography lens as this is crucial to my work. I am going to book out the macro photography lens for all my shoots so that I am prepared for any close up shots. I will only need to book out the studio once, however I would like to leave a space free in my schedule just in case the photographs do not turn out the way I hoped. • Because the majority of my work will be produced away from college, I do not need to worry about the availability of personnel. I need a model (Sophie Grantham) for only a few of my posters which means that I can work around her product and find a time when she is free. • In this project, I must follow strict time scales as I have a several weeks to produce my posters, however I do not have much room to make mistakes. This is why I am going to produce a schedule so that I can follow it closely and give myself some time to make corrections and improvements whilst not disturbing other production time.
  • 6. Production Schedule Week of production Tasks Week 8 • Choose to focus on films first and analyze the common themes. I will focus on a specific theme in that film and try to portray it in my photography style. I will create a mock up first to see how it will look. • Visit different reserves and photo shoot locations. • Week 8 and 9 are focusing on nature based photographs. Week 9 • Build the 3 film posters by creating the background, colour scheme and font. Edit my photographs. • Have 3 posters almost ready for completion. Week 10 • Choose to focus on 3 more films. Focus my photography style on portraits as I struggle with this style the most and need more time. • Book out the studio and take portrait shots. • Week 10, 11 and 12 are focused on portrait photographs. Week 11 • Begin following tutorials on how to manipulate the face, work on this all week and at the start of week 12. • Edit all portrait shots Week 12 • Finish following horror tutorials and editing the images. • Begin building the horror/portrait based posters. Week 13 • Complete the portrait based posters. • Focus on other styles of photography such as street or architecture as I need more time on this. • Create and finish styles of posters. • Week 13 is focusing on street and other styles of photography. Could perhaps lead into week 14. Week 14 • Finish street style/architecture posters. • Edit any changes on any of the posters that I am not happy with.
  • 7. Personnel • My team is going to be very small because I do not want to pull my friends away from their own work. Sophie is going to model for some of the portrait shots and help me when driving to different shoot locations so that she can help me carry and set up the equipment. Sophie is always working on her own print production so she has a similar skill set to me. She knows a little bit about camera therefore she can help me when alternating the lens etc. She has been on the course for 2 years therefore she has plenty of experience working with cameras. Because she is also interested in photography, she can contribute creative ideas to help improve my photography and change the shot type, colour scheme etc. Sophie is also in my target audience (young adults). Furthermore she can give me feedback on my photography and posters or my ideas to make them appeal and suit her more. • However, having Sophie help me throughout this project may cause some issues with the schedule and her availability as she has her own project to focus on. This means that I will have to meet with Sophie and produce a schedule that will suit both of us without causing disruptions. Sophie can drive to all the locations which means that we do not have to plan the shoots during college time. Although, it may cost her a lot of money for petrol which is why I will try to only ask for her help when I desperately need it.
  • 8. Facilities • I have produced an equipment check list that helps me organize what equipment I need for what shoot. I have my own Canon 1300d camera with an alternate lens that ranges from 70mm-200mm which means I can successfully achieve close up shots just not macro style shots. For this style of photography I will need to book a macro lens that ranges up to 300mm. This lens will primarily be used during the first and second week that are based on the nature posters. I have also bought my own tripod which means that I do not need to worry about booking one out. It is a full height tripod which means it will stabilize the camera whilst I am taking macro photographs that are too difficult to take hand held due to the high shutter speed. I will also need to use the studio for some of the portrait shots as it provides great adjustment lighting. When I am going to any shoot, I will bring my equipment check list so that I do not forget any equipment as I do not have time to make mistakes. On this list I have also included a fully charged back up battery and a additional SD card so that I do not run out of space on the camera or the camera dies whilst I am on the shoot. Finally, I have camera bags with me so that all the lens are protected as well as the tripod and the camera itself. • Once I have finished my shoots and have taken all the pictures necessary, I will then import them onto the Mac. I will then pick my favourites and edit them on Photoshop. Photoshop has introduced to range of different skills and techniques that I can apply to my photographs to make them as high quality as possible. I will also use YouTube to follow tutorials which can expand my knowledge on Photoshop.
  • 9. Materials • There are several different materials and props that will be needed during this project. For most of the photographs I depend on the wildlife and the weather; an example would be when photographing for Little Miss Sunshine, I would like to photograph the sun with lots of flowers in a field. When shooting for Black Swan, I would obviously need a black swan in the image. For the thriller/horror film posters I will need fake weapons such as knives or guns for the model to be holding. I will also need a distressed costume to portray the fear. For certain shoots, the models will have to wear vintage clothing depending on when the film is set. I have not got specific outfits/costumes in mind or even specific props, however once I have ideas on the photographs I can purchase these important items. Most purchases will be from amazon because they can be delivered the next day and will not cost too much. • In the project, I am debating about including graphics because this is a style of media I have not really experimented with. Most minimalist film posters are graphically designed and are very creative. I want all my posters to be photography based because this is what I enjoy the most and want to progress and expand on. However, I would like to possibly experiment with some background graphics that are only small details but fill empty space. • For some of the shots I would like to have flowers in the studio so that I can have an empty background for text. This means that I will need fake flowers as props whilst in the studio as there will be too much background noise if they are taken outside.
  • 10. Supply • For some of my posters I need a model whether that be a portrait shot or just a shot over the shoulder. For these specific shots I am going to use my friend Sophie Grantham. Release Form: Name: Sophie Grantham Phone Number: (…) I give consent to being photographed for Abbie Nicholls’ project and the photographs being posted online. Confirmation:
  • 11. Camera • On my camera, I am going to always have it on the aperture priority setting because it is easy to change the settings such as the shutter speed and exposure. You can also change the depth of field so that you can the object in focus with a blurred background or have the full landscape in focus in a large f number. Framing will change depending on the style of photography that I am working on. However, I will always follow the rule of thirds or the Fibonacci scale. The Fibonacci scale means that the object is in the centre as this is where the eye is naturally drawn to first. I will use the rule of thirds for wildlife, nature or landscape photography because it will help frame the image and give it a good structure that is more appealing to the eye. The angle for nearly all of my photographs will be eye level. I will sure to get low on the ground so that I can fit more of the landscape/background into the frame. This influences the shot to be wider and much more interesting. All macro shots will be taken from a high angle above so that the inside of the flower is exposed more which makes the colour much more vibrant. I would like to take my wildlife photographs at eye level because this gives me access to photograph more of the animals face. Furthermore, the wildlife is not portrayed as weak or having more power as a shot would do taken from a high angle. The camera angle can be changed by adjusting the tripod to different heights or angles which can help make the shot much more interesting. The tripod will also help detect no hand held movement which shakes the camera and ruins the shot. The lighting plays a big part in the photograph because it can easily be over exposed or too dark. I will always set up the camera and take a tester shot to view the environment and make any adjustments before I begin shooting. If the lighting is too bright, I can change the brightness on the camera by lowering it to -1 or do the same to increase. However, there is also a setting on aperture priority where you can take the photos on a sunny effect or cloudy effect so that is can increase the saturation and highlights to suit the environment better and result in a high quality image. Most of the shots will be structured simply and basic as they are of landscapes or wildlife. However for some of the portrait shots, I would like to experiment with shots over the shoulder to make them more appropriate to the audience.
  • 12. Post Production • All my posters are going to be produced in Photoshop: my photographs will also be edited in the same software. I am comfortable working on Photoshop because this is the software that I have used for all of my projects. There are some techniques and skills that I have watched on different tutorials that I am not so sure about and that need more time working on. When editing my photographs, I always use the camera raw filter because this allows me to change the saturation, colours, brightness and much more. I think that the filter increases the quality of my images because of the clarity and vibrancy of colours. Another editing technique that I am comfortable using on Photoshop is curves. I think that this helps bring out more depth in the images such as the shadows and highlights. On the last project I focused a lot on the text on how to make it stand out more. I would like to incorporate these techniques into the FMP such as spacing and drop shadows to make the title have more of an impact. • I have watched some tutorials that I would like to follow which challenge me to lots of new skills that I have never seen on Photoshop before. This includes wrapping an image to blur two images together. Creating a horror poster is very difficult because there is lots of work to do in the background such as different shades and patterns to look like blood splattered. Because I am creating a range of different genre film posters, I need to watch several different tutorials to make my project look as professional as possible. I need to learn how to create fantasy backgrounds that seem dreamy and like magic so that there is a strong meaning of what the film symbolizes. The main tutorials that I need to watch are the horror tutorials where you can manipulate the face as I found this very hard in the experiments. The tutorials are only a small selection of videos I will follow: I will find more at the time of production. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_rbdAawZZg (how to create a creepy horror poster) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0src_xBb-sA (text tutorial) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fs0RcTXXXU (blood text tutorial) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpwtshSCm-Y (minimalist vector) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n7llXgSn4U ( how to create a textured background)
  • 13. Copy • The Perks Of Being A Wallflower “We accept the love we think we deserve”. • Lady Bird “Its given to me by me”. • Black Swan “I felt it. Perfect. It was perfect”. • American Beauty “Wear a raincoat”. • Candy “Once upon a time, there was Candy and Dan”. “Everything was gold”. “You came into my life really fast and I liked it”. • Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Minds “ Please let me keep this memory. Just this one”. “I'm erasing you and I’m happy”. • Grease “She looks too pure to be pink!” • The Notebook “ You and me…everyday”. “You are, and always have been my dream”. “I love you”. • The Shining “Wendy, I’m home”. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. • Pans Labyrinth “The world is a cruel place”. This is only a selection of films that I am going to create posters for. I would like to include taglines on the poster which are famous quotes from the film. I like this idea because it gives the audience an insight into what the film is about and whether it will interest them. These are only a small selection of ideas and not taglines I am going to necessarily use.
  • 14. Design- Colour Scheme For all colour schemes found, I used the website Coolors that helps find you bold and pastel colours that will work best together. I liked using this website because it was easy to select my own colours and the website to generate the connecting colours. For this project, I am not going to use a specific colour scheme because it will vary across all my posters. For example, on the drama genre, I would like to follow the more neutral colour scheme such as C4B1AE as it is simplistic and signifies the emotion in the film. A common colour scheme for the action films is blue and yellow. I would like to follow this colour scheme because it is traditional but also highlights the emotion and hidden themes/meanings in the film. I would like to follow all these colour schemes as well as creating more when working on production as it depends on the photograph used on the poster with what colour scheme correlates alongside. I will carry on using Coolors to find even more colour schemes as I want there to be endless possibilities.
  • 15. Design- Fonts Throughout this project, I am going to be using a range of different fonts for each poster as it depends on the genre of the film. For example, I can not use the same font for a horror poster as on a drama poster. Font plays an essential part to the poster and on each poster I will use 3 different fonts: the title, the cast and the tagline. These examples of fonts found will not be the only fonts that I use. All fonts will be downloaded from dafont.com When researching for fonts, I found a selection that would work perfectly for specific films that I have in mind. Horror Fonts: Action/Adventure: Romance/Teen/Coming Of Age: Shape Of Water Inspo: Lady Bird Inspo: The Shining Inspo: Grease Inspo:
  • 16. Design- Style Sheet/ Potential Ideas • I have lots of different ideas that could be used for my posters. For example, for the film Lady Bird I want the poster to be minimalistic and simple. It will include macro photography of lady bird which will be very simple. I do not want to include any graphics on this poster design because I want it to be basic but effective. • For Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind or Little Miss Sunshine I have the idea to photograph a landscape on a sunny day to connect to the titles. I also want the landscape photographs to be quite simple: I will leave lots of open space at the top of the image with a subject at the bottom or in the middle. This gives me room to include the cast and the title at the top of the page. At the top of the landscape I will possibly include some graphics of stars etc. This would work alongside films that are fantasy and sci fi such as Harry Potter. • The Shape Of Water poster is going to be the most simplistic: it will include a photograph of water alongside the title, tagline and cast. • For Grease I am going to including some background graphics to make it look more retro and vintage as the film is set in the 50s. The graphics would include grease drops or stains as well as the font being bold and eye catching. I would like to take photographs in the studio for Grease for it to be more professional. • All film posters will have taglines which are quotes from the film so that the audience has a small insight into what the film is about. I think that my more creative ideas will happen when I am on the shoot coming up with different ideas. One idea that I have is to take the photograph then draw over it on Photoshop so that it looks like I have drawn the image in that detail and that it isn't a photograph. • For the more universal film pictures I would such as Up I would like to photograph a landscape and then draw in some graphic detail such as balloons or animals etc. This includes both art styles and will make the poster more creative. It will also challenge me to a new skill set of drawing images into Photoshop and experimenting with graphic design. One common design that is used for graphic design posters is that they are minimalistic and tend to have a strong colour scheme based on one colour. I like this technique and would like to incorporate this into my photography with a strong one colour background and a monochrome colour scheme. I would do this by taking portrait or macro shots in the studio with a blue or red background. This block colour will help make the posters look more artistic and creative.
  • 17. Image Style- Macro Macro photography is one of my favourite styles of photography because the camera picks up detail that we can not even see. I think that it makes photography much more creative and influences the photograph to be much more colourful. I have picked these pictures because these are the type of images I would like to take for my project. For example, I would like to be able to take a macro photograph of a lady bird for the film poster. I enjoy nature photography therefore mixing the two is very appealing to me. Alessandro Zocchi is my favourite macro photographer because he focuses on nature macro photographs as well as industrial macro photography which is what makes him so creative. His images are such high quality that inspire me to want to achieve such great images. https://alessandrozocchi.com/nature - his website/gallery
  • 18. Image Style- Landscape David Noton https://www.davidno ton.com Colin Prior https://colinprior.co.uk Landscape photography is going to be the most common style of photography featured on my posters. I really like these two landscape photographers because the photos almost look panoramic: they are skinny and wide. The colours are bright and eye catching which is what makes them stand out. I really like landscape photographs because I think they are calming and natural: they have not been staged together. I would like to be able to produce photographs of this quality.
  • 19. Image Style- Nature & Wildlife Tim Laman photographs http://www.ti mlaman.com/ Frans Lanting http://lanting. com The two photographers that I have decided to focus on for nature and wildlife photography are Tim Laman and Frans Lanting. These photographers are my favourite because they create images that are such high quality and interesting and inspire me to achieve photographs on this level. Both photographers also specialize in landscape photography and macro photography therefore experiment with all my favourite styles. The colours are always so vibrant and such high quality. All of their photographs do not appear to be edited too much which signifies that they have there equipment set up ready for the wildlife. I want my photographs to look like this is my project however I do not have access to a high quality lens like either of these artists. This work has definitely inspired me and influenced me to think of other locations where I may find interesting wildlife and landscapes.
  • 20. Image Style- Portrait All these portraits were taken by the photographer Annie Leibovitz. She has photographed for magazines such as Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. I really like this style of portrait because they are dramatic and really high quality. The background is not just one solid colour which tends to be a common theme on portrait photography. I think this helps bring the eye colour or the colour in their clothes. I would like to take portraits like this because it is strong eye contact with the audience which means it would be easier to manipulate the face on Photoshop. I would also like to take side shots and close ups of eyes to give more power and drama.
  • 21. Layout Plans Idea 1 The first layout idea is to follow traditional theatrical poster methods. This includes the title of the film at the bottom of the poster with the cast along the top of the photograph. The photograph takes up the entire poster and tends to have a plain colour background which is usually black or white. I like this layout because it focuses on the photography: it is the main subject of the poster and what grabs your attention. However there are restrictions as to what styles of photography can be used when following a layout like this: it needs to be very simple with no background noise. This means that I could not do landscape photography however macro and portrait shots would work. There does not tend to be much colour in the image itself; the colour usually comes from the text or graphics. I like this technique because it would challenge me to a new editing technique where I would dull down the colours instead of brightening them and making them more vibrant. Although, I do not like this technique because the audience is drawn to the coloured parts first and not the photograph which I want to be the most important element of my posters. I really like the idea of the colourful border which links to the meaning of religion in the film Lady Bird. I would also like to include hidden meanings in the form of graphics to challenge me to new skills and improve my poster quality. I really like this layout because it focuses on photography, however when I am taking landscape or wildlife shots, it will have to be a different layout.
  • 22. Layout Plans- Idea 2 Image Small background graphics Main cast Title Small background graphics This layout plan follows a similar design to the previous layout plan, however there is much detail. Graphics have been incorporated into this design because there tends to be some small background detail in the theatrical posters that fill empty space and make the background much more interesting. Encompassing graphics into my work will challenge me to a new skill set that I have not experimented with before therefore it could improve the quality of my work. Some graphics that I would like to include would depend on the genre and the film, however I would like to draw graphics in the sky and on the landscape .For example, for a fantasy film I could draw in stars and the moon. I could also draw in flowers, shadows of people or blood into the bottom of horror film posters. The text is positioned in the same places as the previous layout plan except the title. In theatrical releases the title tends to be in the centre of the image or at the top of the poster. I do not like this technique because I prefer the title in the centre of the page or near the bottom so that the main focus is on the image and the graphics not the text. I do not have a preference on the cast at the top or bottom because I think it depends on where there is the most room. The poster is already detailed with no empty space therefore it cant be placed where it is too crowded with graphics. I would like to draw the graphics and scan them in because I think that it will improve the quality of my work.
  • 23. Idea Generation • A possible idea for this project would be to create a photography version of the poster and a graphic version so that it highlights a range of techniques. The photography posters would be more detailed and the graphic posters be minimalistic. • This is my idea generation for the Perks Of Being A Wallflower: • I want the picture to be of a flower that grows up the wall (a wallflower) as this will help frame the image and lead the eye. It will be on the left hand side so that the middle and right side of the image is just bricks. Here I will fill the space with the title, cast and tagline. I would like to change the ‘O’ in the title and digitally draw them as flowers or suns to make the title more eye catching and unique. I would like the colour scheme to be yellow just like the original because it will stand out amongst the flowers and the bricks. • Idea Generation for Candy: • A very simple photograph in the studio of a candy jar filled with sweets. In the middle of the jar there will be the title of the film. I want this post to be minimalistic so this means there is little text. The photograph will be taken in the studio on a beige background to influence the colours to stand out. An alternative idea for this would be to digitally draw a candy jar that is full of drugs as the film is about drug addiction and then scan it into Photoshop. • Idea Generation for The Shining: • Graphically I could draw a type writer with the iconic slogan coming out on the page. Underneath I would include the title. There would be a block colour background to make the work look similar to Saul Bass. • A photography version of this would be photographing a type writer in the studio with the same slogan on the page with a dull beige backdrop. Alternatively, I could photograph lightening so that it is like a strong bold light in the landscape.
