WORLD HAND HYGIENE DAY – 5th May, 2015

2. World Hand Hygiene Day takes place on May 05, 2015. The day is declared by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and encoures patients and their family members to join health workers in their
efforts to practice good hand hygiene. According to WHO, every year, hundreds of millions of
patients around the world are affected by health care-associated infections. More than half of these
infections could be prevented by caregivers properly cleaning their hands at key moments in patient
care. However, this year is different. 2015 is the 10th anniversary of the WHO Clean Care is Safe
Care program.
INTRODUCTION
Hand hygiene is the act of cleaning ones hands with or
without the use of water or another liquid, or with the use of
soap, for the purpose of removing soil, dirt, and/or
microorganisms. The main medical purpose of washing hands
is to cleanse the hands of pathogens (including bacteria or
viruses) and chemicals which can cause personal harm or
disease.
Hand hygiene is especially important for people who handle
food or work in medical field and hospitality sectors .

After 10 years of the WHO Clean is Safer Care program, here
are 10 reasons why you should be part of it:
Hand hygiene at the right times saves lives.

Health-care problems, like HAIs which are often invisible but nevertheless
still occur, are political and social challenges that we must address now.

which costs approximately $3 per bottle, can prevent HAI and millions of
deaths every year.

topic, whether due to HAI or outbreaks of deadly diseases like Ebola.
Embedding specific moments for hand hygiene action into health worker
workflow makes it easier to do the right thing every minute, every hour,
every day.

Hand hygiene is core to all interventions, whether inserting an invasive

WHY?
• Thousands of people die every day around the world from infections acquired while receiving
health care.
• Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission during health care.
• Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs
and prevent health care-associated infections.
HOW?
• Clean your hands by rubbing them with an alcohol-based formulation, as the preferred mean for
routine hygienic hand antisepsis if hands are not visibly soiled. It is faster, more effective, and better
tolerated by your hands than washing with soap and water.
• Wash your hands with soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or visibly soiled with blood or
other body fluids or after using the toilet.
• If exposure to potential spore-forming pathogens is strongly suspected or proven, including
outbreaks of Clostridium difficile, hand washing with soap and water is the preferred means.
