Paul Tolley Our New Chief Executive Paul Tolley • Paul Tolley will be joining New Directions as our new Chief Executive Officer. • He has been Chief Executive of Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action since 2008. • Paul’s career in the voluntary sector began as a live-in personal assistant . • He worked for seven years in a user- led disability rights organisation assisting disabled people to live independent lives. • We are very much looking forward to welcoming Paul to New Directions. Paul said, “I am under no illusion that all of the wonderful work that New Directions carries out on a daily basis is only achieved because of the dedicated work of the 150 or so staff and that the success of the team which Doreen has led has set a bar of expectation that I will work hard to sustain and carry forward.” RIGHTS
  2. 2. • Rugby Library has set up a book group with the people we support. • The Books Beyond Words series tells stories in pictures and helps people with learning and communication difficulties explore and understand their own experiences and the world around them. • Themes range from love and relationships to health, crime and death.   3. 3. • Tina has raised £200 for Macmillan Cancer Support by opting to go for an extreme buzz cut at a local hairdresser. Tina said, “I have never done anything like this before and I wanted to do something for a good cause. I chose Macmillan because it is a cancer charity and I thought it would be nice. I had my hair cut with clippers and shaver and told everyone at the hairdresser why I was having it done. The other customers watched and said, “Good on you.” It feels different with my hair now, very cold and I can feel the wind more, but I have a hat and I’m glad I did it.” A Headshave Fundraiser For Macmillan Tina enjoyed raising funds for a good cause Office Manager Jill, Volunteer Paul with Bart Good Luck Bart • Bart, who has been volunteering for us is relocating to Scotland. • Bart has supported Kenton and Trevor every Sunday and Paul in his role at Head Office. • Paul has been volunteering for three years.

Customer Health Put To The Test At CCN • A team of nurses and a phlebotomist from the Healthy Living Team completed health checks on consenting attendees at our Community Choices Network (CCN). • The team checked their blood pressure, height, weight and gave blood sugar tests. Those who took part were given their results to take home so that any concerns could be picked up. • Lisa is a Support and Activity Worker at CCN and successfully applied for a grant from the Heart of England Co-operative Society for £200 towards our Construction Group. • The sessions at CCN promote teamwork, communication, patience and organisational skills with constructive problem solving and lateral thinking. Allotment Project Is A Challenge • CCN welcomed a group of students taking part in the Challenge with the National Citizen Service (NCS). • After learning more about what we do and discussing how they could help us, the students created a Fairy Glen with sensory items. Therapy Pony Brings Big Smiles • Pinocchio the miniature therapy pony visited Community Choices Network (CCN). • Everyone enjoyed petting him; some took his reins and walked him around the building.

  7. 7. • Janine volunteers at The Hub cafe at the local Methodist Church. • She works on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays serving refreshments, jacket potatoes and toasted sandwiches. Janine said, “I love meeting all the different people who come in to The Hub and talking to customers. Some people pop in after their activities have finished. I feel a real part of the community.” Janine at The Hub Pupils Make Baking Day A Piece Of Cake The group of pupils who helped with baking, Michelle, Tracey and Rose • We worked in partnership with Rokeby Primary School to build local connections and community spirit. Children visited Milner House and baked cakes with the cooking group from CCN. • People from CCN also visited the school to participate in an afternoon of creative arts. Pupils said, “Thank you New Directions, you are making a change in our community” and “People like you bring a little hope and leave a little sunshine everywhere you go.” Serving With A Smile At The Hub
  8. 8. Sometimes You Just Need A Seaside Day • Based on the huge success of last year’s day out to Skegness, we went on another day trip to Weston-Super- Mare. • Fun was had by all. The ISO:9001 auditor said, “Everyone I saw appeared happy and fulfilled. I have no hesitation in recommending this company for recertification and would like to thank staff for their co-operation and openness and residents for their enthusiasm.” New Directions are proud to have recently maintained our certification under the ISO:9001 Award. Ernie John Tony • Ernie loved to socialise and thoroughly enjoyed parties and music. • He loved to play the ‘bones’ at any occasion and didn’t mind if he was in tune or not. • John was well known in Rugby for many years. • He would stand at the top of Bilton Road watching the traffic and telling anyone off who went through an amber light. • Tony loved animals and enjoyed it when people brought their pets in to see him. • He was a quiet, gentle man who had a love of all things Disney. We are very sad that we had to say farewell to three of our longest standing residents over the last year. Ernie, John and Tony hold a special place in all our hearts especially the people they lived with at Poppy Place. A Fond Farewell
