004 -leadership vs. management

  1. 1. 1 Leadership vs. Management Training Leader: Mr. Md. Akbar Hassan Date: 3rd , 4th & 5th December, 2015 Leadership & management : Stephen Covey “Effective leadership is putting first things first”. “Effective management is discipline, carrying it out”.
  2. 2. 2 Leadership is the process of motivation others to act in particular ways in order to achieve specific goals. Leadership is a willingness to accept responsibility, an ability to develop three major skills ( cooperate others, listen well, others needs above own needs) that can be acquired through practice. Leadership Types All leadership is temporary-the momentary nature of leadership as because the situation may come to an end and circumstances change: •Situational Leadership •Transitional Leadership •Hierarchical Leadership
  3. 3. 3 Situational Leadership •The right person in the right place at the right moment. •Recognize the time and circumstances. •Willingness & ability to assume the responsibility, listen and to take the responsibility to help to achieve its goal. • It often involves: no cost decision, solo decision, moral decision, thoughtful decision, community decisions, philanthropic decisions, institutional decisions. 6
  4. 4. 4 Transitional Leadership •The right time but wrong circumstances. •It may occur when: leadership requires at a certain moment, but the person who is the leader may not be capable of delivering the leadership. •Transitional leaders may: be missing all the right stuff, be fearing the risk. Leadership Styles •Coercive – Do what I tell you •Affiliative – People come first •Pace setting – Do as I do, now •Authoritative – Come with me •Democratic – What do you think? •Coaching – Try this
  5. 5. 5 Is Leadership Necessary? •1st task of the Leaders: to be the boast that sounds a clear sound. •2nd task of the Leaders: to accept the leadership as responsibility rather than rank or privilege. •3rd task of the Leaders: to earn trust. What is the difference between a leader and a manager?
  6. 6. 6 Leadership vs. Management “Managers are people who do things right and Leaders are people who do the right things” Manager Focuses on present Prefers stability Orients toward short term Focuses on procedure Asks “what” and “how” Prefers to control Is happy in complexity Uses the rational mind Works within the context of the organization & business Leader Looks future Appreciates change Orients toward long term Engages in a Vision Asks “why” and “what” Knows how to delegate Prefers to simplify Trusts intuition Takes social & environmental contexts into consideration The Difference: Manager vs. Leader
