Induction Skills Questionnaire
Level 4
During your course you will learn many new things, often in a different way to
previously. As an undergraduate you need to acquire more than just facts, you need
to be able to use them in a creative, intelligent and critical manner. Your course
allows you to gain and develop the skills needed by a graduate scientist. Many of
the skills you need you already have, you have used them before at school and
college, some skills may be less familiar to you; but you will have ample chance to
advance and consolidate all skills needed on your course - this is done through the
Professional and Scientific Practice (PSP) modules.
To help you get the most from these modules, we would like you to complete the
following questionnaire. Remember to be as honest as possible and to think
carefully about the evidence on which you are basing your answers. Your
responses will let us see what you, as a group, see as your strengths and
weaknesses, so we can tailor the module appropriately. Your answers will also give
you a baseline against which to compare your progress throughout your course.
Remember, one of the most frequently asked questions by students is, "What level
do you want? How does university work compare to school?" through this
questionnaire you will start to get an answer and develop a method of realistic self-
evaluation.
Complete this questionnaire on paper today, or think about your responses, but you
will need to find the version on Blackboard to fill it in electronically to upload into your
e-portfolio (we will show you the e-portfolios in the week 11 PSP1 workshop). You
will use this initial self-assessment of abilities when planning and discussing your
work.
Remember, allot of undergraduate learning relies on you directing your own learning.
Once you start to see when and where you need to improve then you will have to
take a personal responsibility and engage with support material. Remember too that
when you find something that interests you, you will have plenty of opportunity to
develop that interest yourself.
