BUILDINGS (THIS PRESENTATION IS BASED ON STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
ADOPTED IN EXECUTING MANY PROJECTS BY OUR TEAM IN SOUTH
INDIA). ANY SYSTEM PROPOSED SHALL BE VISUALISED WITH THE
FOLLOWING CONSIDERATION.
1. PROPER LOAD FLOW FROM HORIZONTAL PLANE TO ELEMENTS IN
VERTICAL PLANE AND REACHING THE GROUND WHICH ULTIMATELY
BEARS THE LOAD.
2. LATERAL LOADS SUCH AS WIND AND EARTHQUAKE
3. THERMAL LOAD - IF BUILDING IS MORE THAN 40 METERS i.e. ONE
PLAN DIMENSION TO AVOID MOVEMENT JOINTS.
4. SAFETY AND SERVICEABILITY OF THE BUILDING
5. CODE COMPLIANT

ANY SYSTEM SUGGESTED SHALL BE VISUALISED IN COMPLETE BEFORE IT
IS PUT IN FRONT OF CLIENTS. OUR VISIALISATION OF THE BEHAVIOUR
OF EACH COMPONENT OF STRUCTURE, ITS CAPACITY TO RESIST AND
TRANSFER TO THE NEXT ELEMENT AND SO ON.
WE SHALL ALWAYS BEAR IN OUR MIND THAT THE CONTINUOUS
BEHAVIOUR IS VISIALIZED TILL THE LOAD REACHES THE GROUND.

VARIOUS STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS.
1. SLAB IS A PRIMARY MEMBER WHICH TAKES THE LOADS COMING ON
HORIZONTAL PLANES.
2. BEAMS, WALLS, COLUMNS ARE THE MEMBERS WHICH RECEIVES THE
LOAD FROM SLAB, ITS OWN LOADS AND IMPOSED LOADS AND
TRANSFER TO THE GROUND.
3. IF IT IS MULTI STORIED, THEN COLUMNS AND WALLS WILL TRANSFER
TO THE FLOORS BELOW AND FINALLY TO GROUND.
4. CARE SHALL BE EXCERCISED WHILE DESIGNING EACH ELEMENTS
CAPACITY AND ITS CONNECTIVITY WITH THE SYSTEM.
5. ALWAYS CODAL PROVISIONS SUCH AS THICKNESS, SPAN RATIO SHALL
BE KEPT IN MIND IN OBTAINING VARIOUS SIZES OF ELEMENTS
INITIALLY AND MAY BE REVIEWED DEPENDING ON ARCHITECTURAL
OR OTHER CONSIDERATION SUCH AS SERVICES REQUIREMENTS.
THUS, A STRUCTURAL SYSTEM CAN BE DEFINED AS
AN ASSEMBLY OF VARIOUS LOAD TRANSFERRING
STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS TO PROVIDE STABILITY AND
DURABILITY AGAINST LOADS (GRAVITY + LATERAL)

STRUCTURAL WALL SYSTEM:
WHEN THE PROJECT IS VERY LARGE, TALL AND REPETITIVE OR NEAR
REPETITIVE, TIME BOUND DELIVERABLES, WE NEED TO THINK OF A
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM WHICH COULD BE FAST IN CONSTRUCTION WITH
MOST OF THE SERVICES COULD BE EMBEDED OR PREPLANNED.
IN THIS, ALL ARCHITECTURAL WALLS WITH CILL LEVEL, LINTEL LEVEL
KNOWN OR DETERMINED ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES. A STRUCTURAL
PLAN USING THESE INFORMATION WILL BE PREPARED WHERE ALL OR
MOST OF THE WALLS ARE USED AS STRUCTURAL WALLS AND ANALYSIS
TO BE CARRIED OUT TO CHECK THE STABILITY. IN MOST OF THE CASES
SINCE THE STIFNESS OF STRUCUTRE IS HIGH, LATERAL DEFLECTIONS
WILL BE USUALLY SAFE.
• IN ORDER TO CONSTRUCT, WE NEED THE FORMWORK UNITIZED AND
ASSEMBLED LIKE JIGSAW PUZZLE WITH DETAILED DRAWING AND
PROPER NUMBERING. THIS WILL BE PREPARED BY THE FORMWORK
VENDOR. THERE WILL BE 2 SETS OF DRAWING, ONE FOR THE WALLS
& THE OTHER FOR THE SLAB SUPPORTING SYSTEM. MAJORITY OF
THIS WILL BE FROM STANDARD SIZES WITH NON STANDARD.
• AS OF NOW THERE ARE LARGE NO OF TO PRODUCE THESE TYPE OF
FORMWORKS IN DIFFERENT MATERIALS LIKE ALUMINIUM (WHICH IS
VERY POPULAR), PVC ETC. CONCRETING OF WALLS AND SLAB SHALL
BE POURED TOGETHER IN SINGLE POUR.

• PROPER CONCRETE WHICH CAN FLOW INTO THE WALLS SUCH AS
SMART DYNAMIC CONCRETE AND OR SELF COMPACTING FREE FLOW
CONCRETE.
• IF THE CAR PARKING IS BELOW THE TOWER BLOCK, THEN THERE WILL
BE TRANSFER SYSTEM WITH TRANSFER GIRDER ABOVE CAR PARKING
ZONE. SERVICES INTERFACE NEEDS TO BE EXCERSIZED BEFORE
FINALIZING.
• UPFRONT INVESTMENT ON THE FORMWORK WILL ALSO NEEDS TO BE
EVALUATED AND ITS REUSABILITY.

FORMWORK WITH INTERNAL STRUCTURAL SYSTEM WITH COLUMN
AND BEAMS OR FLAT SLAB SHALL BE USED. THIS GIVES LOT OF
FLEXIBILITY IN USAGES IF REQUIRED. THESE CAN BE USED FOR ANY
TALL STRUCTURE AS WELL. WE HAVE USED IN BANGALORE OF 37

WITH HIGH GRADE OF CONCRETE, THE SIZE OF THE COLUMNS BECOMES
VERY LARGE AND OCCUPIES THE FLOOR PLATE. IN SUCH SITUATIONS
USING STRUCTURAL STEEL FABRICATED WITH FLOOR AS DECK AND
CONCRETE WITH FIBER REINFORCEMENT / REINFORCEMENT WITH
MESH OR STEEL WILL BE USED AS SLAB.
THIS WILL RESTING ON SECONDARY STEEL MEMBERS WHICH INTURN
ON MAIN STEEL GIDER (CAN BE CASTELLATED ALSO) LAID TO CONNECT
COLUMNS WHICH ARE IN STEEL ENCASED IN CONCRETE TO ACHIEVE
ECONOMY & FIRE PROTECTION OF COLUMNS.
STRUCTURAL STEEL:
THE LATERAL LOADS ARE TO BE TAKEN 100% BY THE CORE WHICH
COULD BE STAIRWELL AND LIFT CORE. MOST OF THE JOINTS ARE IN
SHEAR CONNECTIONS AND SOME MOMENT CONNECTIONS ALSO.
THIS SYSTEM IS CHOSEN ON TALL BUILDINGS HAVING LARGE SPANS,
FASTER CONSTRUCTION AND MOSTLY EXTERNAL FINISHES WITH FAÇADE
IN GLASS ON ALUMINUM FIRE RATED COMPOSITE PANELS.

BASED ON THE CLIENT’S REQUIREMENTS, SERVICES REQUIREMENTS AND THE MUNICIPAL BYLAWS, ARCHITECT PRODUCES A SCHEME WHICH IN COORDINATION WITH VARIOUS SERVICES CONSULTANT, STRUCTURAL SYSTEM/S SHALL BE PREPARED. THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF STRUCTURES LIKE INFRASTRUCTURE, INDUSTRIAL, RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, SPORTS FACILITIES, LARGE SPAN STRUCTURES. STERLING ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY SERVICES PVT. LTD.

PROPER LOAD FLOW FROM HORIZONTAL PLANE TO ELEMENTS IN VERTICAL PLANE AND REACHING THE GROUND WHICH ULTIMATELY BEARS THE LOAD. 2. LATERAL LOADS SUCH AS WIND AND EARTHQUAKE 3. THERMAL LOAD - IF BUILDING IS MORE THAN 40 METERS i.e. ONE PLAN DIMENSION TO AVOID MOVEMENT JOINTS. 4. SAFETY AND SERVICEABILITY OF THE BUILDING 5. CODE COMPLIANT STERLING ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY SERVICES PVT. LTD.
  • 6. ANY SYSTEM SUGGESTED SHALL BE VISUALISED IN COMPLETE BEFORE IT IS PUT IN FRONT OF CLIENTS. OUR VISIALISATION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF EACH COMPONENT OF STRUCTURE, ITS CAPACITY TO RESIST AND TRANSFER TO THE NEXT ELEMENT AND SO ON. IF IT IS MULTI STORIED, THEN COLUMNS AND WALLS WILL TRANSFER TO THE FLOORS BELOW AND FINALLY TO GROUND. 4. CARE SHALL BE EXCERCISED WHILE DESIGNING EACH ELEMENTS CAPACITY AND ITS CONNECTIVITY WITH THE SYSTEM. 5. ALWAYS CODAL PROVISIONS SUCH AS THICKNESS, SPAN RATIO SHALL BE KEPT IN MIND IN OBTAINING VARIOUS SIZES OF ELEMENTS INITIALLY AND MAY BE REVIEWED DEPENDING ON ARCHITECTURAL OR OTHER CONSIDERATION SUCH AS SERVICES REQUIREMENTS.
