From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Abstract
 Boom in technological objects like smartphones, wearable tech etc. in past decade
 The result is a networking paradigm known as, The Internet of Things(IoT)
 In IoT, all that is real becomes virtual
 Why not the same for our technological objects?
 Can objects interact with each other and extract
services from other objects?
1
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Introduction – Basic Definitions
 Internet of Things
 Uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representation in an Internet like structure.
 Smart Objects
 Objects that act in a “smart” way by providing certain services and information
 Social Objects
 Objects that interact with other such “smart” objects
2
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Introduction
 Are there new potentials that smart objects are still expected to manifest?
 Can smart objects allow everything to be encompassed in a fully connected network?
 The above two questions can be answered.
 New type of Social Objects:
 That interact with other objects autonomously
 That crawl the IoT to discover services & information in a trust-oriented way
 That are able to advertise their presence to other smart objects
3
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Introduction – Categories of Objects in IoT
4
Res Sapiens
(Smart Objects)
Res Socialis
(Social Objects)
Res Agens
(Active Objects)
• Increased interoperability with external systems
• Capability to communicate in Human Social Networks
• Capability of building their own social network
• Proficiency in building added-value complex services through
collaboration in the object social network
• Awareness of the Environment
• Interactivity with the surrounding environment
• Pseudo-social behavior with neighbors
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Literature Survey – Stages of Smart Objects
 In current scenario, high level of fragmentation exists in how res sapiens communicate with
each other
 In order for them to communicate, web protocols and communication paradigms are
being designed

Web Language & APIs Objects visible in SN
Web Platforms for Objects
Objects visible in more SN in parallel
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Literature Survey – Stages of Smart Objects
6
 The Web of Things(WoT) was the first innovative step taken
 Allowed to integrate existing web protocols into smart objects
 Currently uses the REpresentational State Transfer(REST) APIs
 Applications can be created using standard web languages and tools
 Currently IoT is being integrated into the Internet of Services
 Still the WoT paradigm has limits due to difficulties in advertising, discovering, accessing other
objects
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
 Proper digital representational of smart objects in the virtual world
 Accounting for relationships between objects
 Methodology to crawl the Internet and find objects in order to exploit them
 Technological solutions to autonomously sense other objects & exchange information
 Analysis of Relational Graph
 How do you analyze the relational networks between social objects?
7
Literature Survey – Current Open Research Issues
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
 Architecture Based problems
 How to devise a multi-technology platform architecture to cope with smart objects?
 Communication Based Problems
 How to accommodate broadcast models like unicast, broadcast, multicast and anycast?
 Has to decide whether a node is to be included in the travel path based on relationship to source
 The proposed methodology should deal with security-based trust issues
8
Literature Survey – Current Open Research Issues
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Why is there a need for forming a
social network between the
objects?
9

 Objects can have Res Socialis features like
 Find Service Providers
 Publish information
 Evaluate trustworthiness
 Get Filtered Information
17
From Smart Objects to Social Objects
Conclusion
 Identified stages of Smart Objects
 Stage I – Objects post about their state in SN of humans
 Stage II – Objects can interact with humans at application layer(Current)
 Stage III – Objects socially interact with other objects to build social networks with humans and other
humans
 Object interaction is increasing and in the future in 2020, around 20 billion objects will be
connected

From Smart Objects to Social Objects

  • 1. From “Smart Objects” to “Social Objects”: The Next Evolutionary Step of the Internet of Things BY MOHAMMED RASHID HUSSAIN 1604-13-742-006
  • 2. Outline  Abstract  Introduction  Literature Survey  Proposed System  Setup and Results  Future Work  Conclusion  References From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 3. Abstract  Boom in technological objects like smartphones, wearable tech etc. in past decade  The result is a networking paradigm known as, The Internet of Things(IoT)  In IoT, all that is real becomes virtual  Why not the same for our technological objects?  Can objects interact with each other and extract services from other objects? 1 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 4. Introduction – Basic Definitions  Internet of Things  Uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representation in an Internet like structure.  Smart Objects  Objects that act in a “smart” way by providing certain services and information  Social Objects  Objects that interact with other such “smart” objects 2 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 5. Introduction  Are there new potentials that smart objects are still expected to manifest?  Can smart objects allow everything to be encompassed in a fully connected network?  The above two questions can be answered.  New type of Social Objects:  That interact with other objects autonomously  That crawl the IoT to discover services & information in a trust-oriented way  That are able to advertise their presence to other smart objects 3 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 6. Introduction – Categories of Objects in IoT 4 Res Sapiens (Smart Objects) Res Socialis (Social Objects) Res Agens (Active Objects) • Increased interoperability with external systems • Capability to communicate in Human Social Networks • Capability of building their own social network • Proficiency in building added-value complex services through collaboration in the object social network • Awareness of the Environment • Interactivity with the surrounding environment • Pseudo-social behavior with neighbors From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 7. Literature Survey – Stages of Smart Objects  In current scenario, high level of fragmentation exists in how res sapiens communicate with each other  In order for them to communicate, web protocols and communication paradigms are being designed 5 Intranet of Things WoT Interoperable Objects Social WoT Multi-Social WoT Web Language & APIs Objects visible in SN Web Platforms for Objects Objects visible in more SN in parallel From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 8. Literature Survey – Stages of Smart Objects 6  The Web of Things(WoT) was the first innovative step taken  Allowed to integrate existing web protocols into smart objects  Currently uses the REpresentational State Transfer(REST) APIs  Applications can be created using standard web languages and tools  Currently IoT is being integrated into the Internet of Services  Still the WoT paradigm has limits due to difficulties in advertising, discovering, accessing other objects From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 9.  Proper digital representational of smart objects in the virtual world  Accounting for relationships between objects  Methodology to crawl the Internet and find objects in order to exploit them  Technological solutions to autonomously sense other objects & exchange information  Analysis of Relational Graph  How do you analyze the relational networks between social objects? 7 Literature Survey – Current Open Research Issues From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 10.  Architecture Based problems  How to devise a multi-technology platform architecture to cope with smart objects?  Communication Based Problems  How to accommodate broadcast models like unicast, broadcast, multicast and anycast?  Has to decide whether a node is to be included in the travel path based on relationship to source  The proposed methodology should deal with security-based trust issues 8 Literature Survey – Current Open Research Issues From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 11. Why is there a need for forming a social network between the objects? 9 Literature Survey From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 12. 10 Proposed System From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 13. Practical Setup & Results  Embodied Microblogging(EM) was the first step in realizing Social WoT  Mediates human-to-human communication  Support additional ways for making noticeable and noticing activities in everyday life  Platforms have been established  Toyota Friend  Nike+  Xively  Evrything  Microsoft SensorMap 11 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 14. Practical Setup & Results – Toyota Friend  Features  Uses Salesforce Chatter to communicate between cars  Minimal Interaction between things  Has a Clear Business/Application Case  Proprietary System for development of apps  No autonomous relationship establishment  Objectives  Improve customer service  Build virtual community to increase customer loyalty 12 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 15. Practical Setup & Results – Nike+  Features  Minimal Interaction between things  Has a Clear Business/Application Case  Proprietary System for development of apps  No autonomous relationship establishment  Objectives  Increase fidelity to the Nike brand  Posts data from shoes to private social network 13 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 16. Practical Setup & Results – Xively  Features  Wide Interaction between things  Open System for development of apps  No autonomous relationship establishment  Unspecified Business/Application Case  Scalable  Mobile  Objectives  Support connection, use, sharing of things, services to create new WoT applications 14 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 17. Practical Setup & Results – Evrything  Features  Wide Interaction between things  Open System for development of apps  Autonomous relationship establishment  Unspecified Business/Application Case  Objective  Provide each object with unique Active Digital Identity(ADI)  Provide access to ADI using URL 15 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 18. Practical Setup & Results – Microsoft Sensor Maps  Microsoft established a sensor map across the globe  Allows collection from the sensors worldwide and identify patterns of behavior of users 16 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 19. Future Work  Objects can have Res Socialis features like  Find Service Providers  Publish information  Evaluate trustworthiness  Get Filtered Information 17 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
  • 20. Conclusion  Identified stages of Smart Objects  Stage I – Objects post about their state in SN of humans  Stage II – Objects can interact with humans at application layer(Current)  Stage III – Objects socially interact with other objects to build social networks with humans and other humans  Object interaction is increasing and in the future in 2020, around 20 billion objects will be connected 18 From Smart Objects to Social Objects
