NOTE: Phill has an ear infection in his right ear. It doesn’t hurt THAT bad, but I probably won’t hear so well from that side, so don’t be offended if I say “what?” a lot. What? What?
Putting Module 2 to bed Module 1: Let’s talk about ways to put the project online Method 1: Weebly Method 2: A new Tumblr Method 3: Start coding an actual page (we’ll look at how to do this in Dreamweaver) Tumblr comments Homework TODAY
The module 2 grades have been posted, and I’ve emailed out grade sheets. All in all, everyone did a great job. The only concern I had is that at times there wasn’t as much introspection by some into how the code on your pages worked. That’s okay, though. We’ll be hitting that as we move forward.Any questions before we close the door on Mod 2? MOD 2
This afternoon during my office hours I will be posting the most complete answers to each of the questions I asked last class to my Tumblr for you to take a look at before next class. To start class on Thursday, we’ll discuss the responses and address any questions you have. LAST CLASS
If you’ve looked close at the Module 1 assignment, you have no doubt noticed that your final “deliverable” for the module is a web page. At this point, you get to choose your “level of difficulty” and begin to think for the first time about how you can style and structure a page. I am going to show you three ways you could put your Module 1 online. There are others, but these should offer you a number of opportunities. WEBBIN’ IT
Hopefully you at least vaguely remember Weebly. We looked at it on our first day. WEEBLY
Here are the pros of Weebly: It’s pretty simple (as I will show you) It’s easy enough to customize You press publish and it is up The Cons: It’s not all that dynamic (visually). The default templates are very rudimentary It doesn’t teach you all that much about Ethos issues: people will know it’s a Weebly page WEEBLY
Let’s take a look at how it works!
Then, of course, there’s Tumblr. I hope you know the format here, because you’ve been using it in class. TUMBLR
Here are the pros of Tumblr: You know how to use it It’s easy enough to customize, and the themes (if you choose carefully) look better than Weebly It, too, is easy to publish The Cons: You will have to play around with how to organize (I’ll show you some things) People will know you’ve chosen a blog as a CMS You’d have to choose to do custom work to do much coding here. TUMBLR
Let’s take a look at how it works!
Dreamweaver is the industry standard in web design. It can be a little bit scary, but it’s never too soon to take a shot at using it. DREAMWEAVER
Here are the pros of Dreamweaver: It’s a start to using a genuine coding tool Limitless potential for customization The Cons: It might be a terrible headache starting out You will need to find hosting (such as your AFS space) There’s no way I can teach you enough of how to use it for this module DREAMWEAVER
Let’s take a look at how it works!
For Module 1, I will not be actively grading you on how your pages look. I will comment, of course, but what I want you to do is focus on presenting your information and getting your feet wet with coding. You should, as a team, pick the option that seems best suited for you. MODULE 1
I’d like you, as a team, to spend the rest of class talking about which of these options is going to work best for you and sort-of committing to one. Before you leave, email me letting me know what the two of you plan to use (just so I can get a sense of what sort of support you might need). You can then work for the rest of class. MODULE 1
I have graded the first 3 weeks of Tumblrs. I will grade week 4 tonight. The posts that are there, which I graded, are good unless I told you to “step your game up.”  Some of you aren’t doing all your posts, though, and if that was the case for the first 3 weeks, you have now lost points for that. Remember– 3 posts a week. TUMBLRs
We will talk about your final project next class and catch up on reading discussions. Your only homework is to post your Twitter response to this question: “What one thing do you feel you need to learn about the coding options from today so that you can do well on Module 1?” See you Thursday!
