EssentialData  Genre: Fiction  Format: It has large cartoon pictures of animals on every page with very few words.  Brief Summary: This book is targeted toward lower elementary level students and can be read aloud to zero to four year olds. The book goes over numbers at the end when the narrator counts the number of friends jumping into the tent so this would be a good review for two to four year olds. All the characters are cartoon animals that fill every page as well as large font and very few words. You could gather all that information just by looking at the cover page because it is full of color, has a large title with curly font and is child friendly. The title is “Maisy Goes Camping” which is very self-explanatory. The author incorporates the lesson of team work by sharing with the readers that building tents are hard but when you work together the job can be done. II. PersonalConnection  Personal response/ association to book: While I read this book I reminisced on the days that my family and I went camping. I also visualized my friends and myself also struggling to put up our tent. This book is relatable to children that camp and the pictures will keep them entertained. III. Evaluation: Literary Elements  The setting of this story is possibly in a backyard, forest or campground. The plot is very simple. Maisy dreamed of going camping so her friends tagged along to fulfill her dreams. They go through the struggle of building the tent and also not all fitting in the tent. The style was simple as well. There were colorful drawings on each page to keep kids interested. It also had large font in bold writing to make it easier for young readers. The characters aren’t vital to the story and their names are only mentioned twice. The author incorporates counting into this children’s book by naming and numbering each friend (animal) that enters the tent, and numbering each friend that pops out of the too full tent. She uses several different animals in the story which could be found more interesting to children than regular people. The theme was directed to teach children that when things are difficult not to give up, and that you can accomplish anything with team work.  Additional Considerations: This book is perfect for young children because it is short, entertaining, colorful, and playful. EssentialData  Genre: Fiction  Format: The pages either have clip art or homemade drawings on them with two or three lengthy sentences on each page.  Brief Summary: This book is perfect for a teacher to read to 4-7 year olds. The words may be a little too complex to read on their own, but the topic would interest this age group most. The pictures are also simple and resemble the story well so they would be able to read the book through pictures on their own. The stories title “Broken Crayons” allows the reader to foreshadow what will happen in the book and may also relate to children that love to color. The book is about a child who wishes to receive crayons for his birthday, but once he gets them he drops the box and all the crayons break. He then entered a coloring contest in which he had to use his broken crayons to draw. He ends up losing but since he shared his broken crayons with the boy who won, the friend was kind and gave him the prize (a box of crayons). II. PersonalConnection  Personal response/ association to book: This book can take any reader back to a time when they remember wanting a specific gift for their birthday. Then once you visualize this gift it allows you do fully understand the main characters heart break when his gift broke. The children reading this book may also be able to connect with his feelings as well, but maybe not completely. III. Evaluation: Literary Elements  The plot of this story revolves around the main character DJ who really wants crayons for his birthday. Immediately after receiving his dream gift, he brings them to school and breaks them. Although his crayons were broken, he shared with the new student, Charlie, that didn’t have any school supplies. The class entered their drawings into a contest and sadly DJ didn’t win. DJ was really upset about the loss but also about his crayons breaking. Surprisingly, the winner was Charlie and because DJ shared his crayons Charlie was so grateful that he gave his prize (a box of crayons) to DJ. The setting goes between DJ’s home and his classroom. The theme of this book is true friendship. Also, if you are caring, generous and nice to your friends you may be rewarded in the future. The style of this book is unique. The author drew all of her own illustrations and used clip art. The drawings are nice but you can tell they are not professionally done.  Additional Considerations  Awards

EssentialData  Genre: Fiction  Format: A chapter book with black and white pictures.  Brief Summary: This chapter book is a great read for seven to nine year olds. It reviews the topic of friendship and helps readers understand what not to do when meeting new people. The title is a little misleading because it makes you believe you will be reading about castles. Immediately my imagine takes me to princesses and castles of that nature but that is not what this chapter book is about at all. Each chapter predicts what the next lie is going to be about. This might be a fun way for students to attempt at predicting what many happen next. Also, what is great about this book is that it has large text size and many black and white pictures to help the younger readers comprehend what is truly happening when they get stuck on the text. PersonalConnection  Personal response/ association to book: This story can be relatable to any children having to move schools during elementary school. I remember one of my best friends in elementary school moved her in 1st grade. It makes me wonder how she felt coming into a new school and how she reacted toward meeting new friends. I hope the children that read this book begin to believe that the best way to make friends is being yourself and that lying is never the right route to take. V. Evaluation: Literary Elements  This chapter book’s plot is based around a girl named Cassie who is new to her school. She meets a boy named Alex and attempts to impress him by lying and telling him that she lives in a castle. The setting is mostly at the school until Alex desperately wants to see the castle. Then the story moves to Cassie’s house where she has to explain all of her lies were just over exaggerated facts. For example she said she had guard lions but in reality she just owns a few cats. She then explains how she desired to be his friend so badly that she thought she needed to be cool in order to do so. The theme of this book is to make children realize it is better to be honest and yourself.  Additional Considerations  Awards
