3. The importance of social groups…
As everyone in the population has different interests, likes and dislikes, its hard to make
movies, magazine and music which appeal to everyone. So we need to choose who our
target audience is in order to directly appeal our product to them, as if you try and
appeal a product to everyone, the product will no longer feel personal and wont do as
well. With this, we then target a smaller population and then create our product to
directly appeal to this group- these groups known as different social groups…
5. The main things I needed to consider when choosing my target audience was the
age group, the gender, the type of music, their likes/dislikes, and how much they
are willing to pay for a magazine.
For my specific target audience and who I planned my magazine to appeal to was
the age group of 16-19 year olds as I firstly, can relate to them more as I am also of
a similar age, and also because I think this age range are the most likely to be
listening to this kind of music.
6. I then chose to base my magazine on both males and females as I think my specific
genre of music appeals to both genders. This also means that I will have more of a
bigger audience which will help to increase sales and profits. This relates to another
similar magazine (NME), who also base their magazine on both genders.
7. I also researched on my AS Media Facebook, what type of things my target audience
would like to help me design my magazine to appeal directly to them. To begin with, most
people who read/ buy / or will be interested in my magazine will more than likely be
passionate about music, which is why my images throughout my magazine will directly
appeal to this aspect as I have used a guitar as a prop to make my images relate to my
audience as much as possible.
8. The content of my double page spread shares a story of “Angelo Camet” ( my celebrity
/ model in my magazine ) and how he became famous from just being an ordinary
student from Sunderland. I think this story will interest and inspire my audience
especially if they are interested in finding a career in music. I also know from my
research that a lot of people also like to just read about their favourite celeb or singer
and how they got famous, so this will also appeal to my target audience, as the
content will entertain them.
9. The style of my magazine also appeals to my target audience as I also researched on
my AS Media Facebook page the favourite colours of people from my target audience.
I then also researched what kind of colour and clothing most related to the indie genre
of music. In conclusion I found that black and white were two colours usually found on
album covers or were more popular to be seen in the bands wardbrobe, as I looked at
bands like catfish and the bottlemen and the Arctic Monekys and found both bands
tend to wear a lot of dark colours. So with this information I definietly decided that I
wanted to use both black and white in my colour theme, however I wanted to top it
off with a third more vibrant colour. With the help of my AS Media Facebook group I
ended up deciding to add a coral colourm, which is usually more of a femine colour
but with the use of bolder font and more masculine poses and shots in my images, I
think there is a balance between the femininity and masculinity in my magazine.
10. Costume of my model and how it
appeals to my target audience…
I also made the costume of my model appeal to my target audience as I focused on my
model following the stereotype of indie bands wearing black and white items of clothes. I
think dark colours of clothing also provoke a sense of mystery which also relates to the
style of my images. I photographed my images so my model was never directly looking at
the reader and was always looking off the page else where, which also gave the whole
style of my magazine a mysterious feel which would leave the reader intrigued, and leave
them wanted to read on,
11. Social groups of my target audience and how I
appealed my magazine to them…
A social group suggests a group of people who regularly interact and have the same
interests or lifestyle…
Social groups that would be apart of my target audience…
. Students
. Musicians
. Hipsters
…My magazine appeals to all of the above as it is cheap and entertaining for students
to enjoy, it also contains plenty of information about different music, bands and artists
and gives the reader information that isn't mainstream and shares more hipster/ indie
bands that not a lot of people have heard of so my reader can discover more music.
With all of the above and information on my specific choices of style, colour and
images I think my magazine nicely does the job of appeal to these social groups and the
rest of my target audience.
