Introduction
It is important to promote effective learning among students and to achieve that goal
teachers have to use all the resources available. ICT´s have shown to be a very useful tool
when implementing it properly inside the classroom. The objective of this proposal is to
design an English Unit using ICT resources to promote innovation in second language
learning. In this proposal it will be seen: students ‘educational context, objectives and
contents that will be covered, methodology that will be used, resources to be used,
activities, classroom settings and a final reflection of the course.
I. Preliminary considerations
Educational context
“Colegio Bicentenario Padre Manuel D`Alzon” is a semi-subsidized school located in
Concepcion, Lota (VIII region of Chile). The school has 6 teachers in the Language
department, 6 teachers in the Math department, 4 teachers in the History department, 5
teachers in the Science department, 3 teachers in the Philosophy department, 2 teachers in
the Art department, 4 teachers in the English department and 3 teachers in the Physical
Education department. The school has approximately 700 students. The school has just one
level which is high school. Every class has approximately 30 to 33 students. The school has
special classrooms according to all the different subjects. There are three English
classrooms all of them are fully adequate with proper material according to the subject. All
classrooms provide a safe environment that promotes effective learning among the students.
Description of the classroom
The classroom has an appropriate size in which the students have enough space to move
around. The students have individual desks. The class is fully decorated with posters related
to the subject. The classroom has a white board, an smart board, forty five dictionaries for
the use of the students and enough hangers for the students to hang their bags.
Students (age, abilities, cognitive styles, prior knowledge and skills, experience, attitudes
and interests. Refer to the number of students in the group and gender distribution)
The class consists of 30 students, 14 boys and 16 girls. They are between 12 y 13 years old.
90% of the students are Catholic while the rest 10% are Protestant. There are twenty seven
students who live in Lota, two students live in Coronel and just one of them lives in
Colcura. None of the students have fail the course before. The total of the students have
good health according to their age and weight. Just three of them have problems related to
myopia but they use the proper glasses that fix that problem; also, the three of them are
always sitting in first desks in order to see what the teacher is writing on the board and the
data presentations. In a speaking test students had to present information about their likes
and dislikes. The students ‘interests are very different depending on their gender. On one
hand, Girls love music groups like “One Direction”, “Justin Bieber”, “Selena Gomez”,
“Five Seconds of Summer”, etc; on the other hand, boys love different team sports specially
because of the world cup.
Define the English level you will work with your students
The English level that I will work with my students is the Alte Level 2 (B1).
Alte Level 2 (B1) suggests the following:
For Listening/Speaking:
-The student can express opinions on abstract/cultural matters in a limited way or offer
advice within a known area, and understand instructions or public announcements.
For reading:
-The student can understand routine information and articles, and the general meaning of
non-routine information within a familiar area.
For writing:
-The student can write letters or make notes on familiar or predictable matters.
II. Objectives and Contents
The objective of the proposal is:
-To promote language learning and the development of language skills in a specific area of
language learning through ICT´s.
Content:
-The content of the proposal are comprehension of a narrative text and speaking expressing
ideas about a famous person.
III. Language skills
In the proposal I am promoting the use of ICT in a receptive skill such as reading and in a
productive skill such as speaking.
Content to be covered:
Topic: “Physical appearance”
Concepts: How to describe a person physically
Vocabulary: present simple tense, adjectives used to describe a person (the color and long
of hair, skin complexion, fat, skinny, muscular, ugly, beautiful, etc)
IV. Methodology
First class: First of all a power point presentation will be presented to the class including
famous people that the students know. In order to elicit previous knowledge that the
students know they will describe the famous people that will be presented. Then, a reading
about physical description will be given in order to give to the students an example of the
proper way to describe people.
Second class: The second class will start with a presentation of my favorite famous person
and the description of him. This will give to the students an example of what to do next.
Then, the students will have to create their own presentation choosing their own favorite
famous person using all the information previously shown. The students will present their
power point presentation to the rest of the class explaining the physical appearance of the
famous person chosen. This activity will be formative.
V. Resources to be used
Describe the ICT (Google resources) to be included in the proposal.
Wix.com is a cloud-based development platform that allows users to create HTML5
websites and mobile sites, through the use of their online drag and drop tools. Users can
add functionalities such as social plug-ins, eCommerce, contact forms, email marketing,
and community forums to their websites using a variety of Wix-developed and third-party
applications. (Wikipedia)
Google docs is a free web-based office suit offered by Google within its Google Drive
service. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating with other
users live Google docs combines the features of Writely and Spreedsheets with a
presentation program. (Wikipedia)
Include the sources for the different materials you are using in the proposal. Why were
these materials chosen? Mention the advantage of working with them.
Wix.com: I used Wix.com as my academic page. The main reason is that wix.com is so
much easier to use in comparison to other sources. Besides, the layout of the page provides
the reader an easy understanding of the information and the pages that can be created.
Google docs: I used google docs because is a very useful tool that allows the teacher to
check students ‘writing and to provide the proper feedback at the same time.
Microsoft Word: I used Microsoft Word since is the most common and easy software to
use. Also, students are very familiar with the format.
Microsoft Power Point: I used Microsoft Power Point because, as I said before, is one of
the most common and easy software to use. The students are familiar with the format and it
is a more attractive way for the students to present information.
VI. Activities
The activity is a speaking task where the students have to create a presentation choosing a
famous person and then describing it. First, the students have to choose the famous person;
secondly, they have to describe that person in a written form using Google docs where I
will correct all of them providing feedback to each student. Finally, when the description
they have to say is correct they have to learn it and show to the class a power point
presentation using a lot of images (as a backup of the physical description they are
providing)
Reading task (receptive skill) (summative)
LessonAim: At the end of the lesson students will be able to comprehend the physical
description of a person by reading.
Situation: First of all students will read a text about famous people and their physical
appearance. The text will describe his/her hair, weight, complexion, etc. The students will
answer all the different activities according to the text given.
Speaking task (productive skill) (formative)
LessonAim: At the end of the class students will be able to describe a famous person
physically to the rest of the class, orally.
Situation: (individual work) The students will look at my example in a power point
presentation where I will describe my favorite famous person (it could be an actor/actress, a
singer, one person of a group or band, a football player, etc).
Task: (individual work) According to what I presented the students have to choose one
famous person. After that, they have to describing the person in Google docs where I will
correct them and I will provide the appropriate feedback. Finally, the students have to
create a power point presentation where they have to describe the person chosen showing a
lot of images for the class to know how the famous person looks.

VII. Classroom setting
Physical space: The classroom is a normal one that has 35 desks facing the whiteboard and
the smart board. The classroom has one computer with connection to internet in which the
students will show their power point presentation one by one in front of the class. Also, the
school has a library.
Time: The task will be realized in school hours. The computer lab will be use to send the
Google docs with the description of the famous person chosen by the student. The
presentation of it will be at school but they have to prepare it at home (prepare a proper
power point presentation and memorize the description)

Final reflexion
What is the importance of including ICT resources in the learning process?
The importance of including ICT resources in the learning process in my opinion is
essential in the acquisition of a second language. When we use ICT’S in the class room it
makes easier the process of learn. In terms of teaching using these resources; such as
google docs, google drive and others makes a big difference between learning by papers
than learning by doing things and interact with others.
In my opinion schools should promote the use of ICT to learn, either a second language or
another subject. It is important to take an advantage of the technological resources that
students have nowadays; such as cell phones , notebooks because they have a wide access
to internet.
Regarding the use of ICT in TEFL: What have you learned in this course?
The use of ICT helps me to realize how to use in an effective way the technological
resources in a class room. In our experience it was a little bit difficult to understand some
concepts, but then it was just thing of practice. I learnt how to use programs; such as google
drive , docs, wix, and others. I always knew about these programs, but I never knew how to
use them. Finally at the end of the semester we have to create a webpage, in my personal
opinion “Wix” was the best option to create a webpage, it was easy to use and add things.

ICT´s have shown to be a very useful tool when implementing it properly inside the classroom. The objective of this proposal is to design an English Unit using ICT resources to promote innovation in second language learning. In this proposal it will be seen: students ‘educational context, objectives and contents that will be covered, methodology that will be used, resources to be used, activities, classroom settings and a final reflection of the course.
  • 3. I. Preliminary considerations Educational context “Colegio Bicentenario Padre Manuel D`Alzon” is a semi-subsidized school located in Concepcion, Lota (VIII region of Chile). The school has 6 teachers in the Language department, 6 teachers in the Math department, 4 teachers in the History department, 5 teachers in the Science department, 3 teachers in the Philosophy department, 2 teachers in the Art department, 4 teachers in the English department and 3 teachers in the Physical Education department. The school has approximately 700 students. The school has just one level which is high school. Every class has approximately 30 to 33 students. The school has special classrooms according to all the different subjects. There are three English classrooms all of them are fully adequate with proper material according to the subject. All classrooms provide a safe environment that promotes effective learning among the students. Description of the classroom The classroom has an appropriate size in which the students have enough space to move around. The students have individual desks. The class is fully decorated with posters related to the subject. The classroom has a white board, an smart board, forty five dictionaries for the use of the students and enough hangers for the students to hang their bags.
  • 4. Students (age, abilities, cognitive styles, prior knowledge and skills, experience, attitudes and interests. Refer to the number of students in the group and gender distribution) The class consists of 30 students, 14 boys and 16 girls. They are between 12 y 13 years old. 90% of the students are Catholic while the rest 10% are Protestant. There are twenty seven students who live in Lota, two students live in Coronel and just one of them lives in Colcura. None of the students have fail the course before. The total of the students have good health according to their age and weight. Just three of them have problems related to myopia but they use the proper glasses that fix that problem; also, the three of them are always sitting in first desks in order to see what the teacher is writing on the board and the data presentations. In a speaking test students had to present information about their likes and dislikes. The students ‘interests are very different depending on their gender. On one hand, Girls love music groups like “One Direction”, “Justin Bieber”, “Selena Gomez”, “Five Seconds of Summer”, etc; on the other hand, boys love different team sports specially because of the world cup.
  • 5. Define the English level you will work with your students The English level that I will work with my students is the Alte Level 2 (B1). Alte Level 2 (B1) suggests the following: For Listening/Speaking: -The student can express opinions on abstract/cultural matters in a limited way or offer advice within a known area, and understand instructions or public announcements. For reading: -The student can understand routine information and articles, and the general meaning of non-routine information within a familiar area. For writing: -The student can write letters or make notes on familiar or predictable matters. II. Objectives and Contents The objective of the proposal is: -To promote language learning and the development of language skills in a specific area of language learning through ICT´s. Content:
  • 6. -The content of the proposal are comprehension of a narrative text and speaking expressing ideas about a famous person. III. Language skills In the proposal I am promoting the use of ICT in a receptive skill such as reading and in a productive skill such as speaking. Content to be covered: Topic: “Physical appearance” Concepts: How to describe a person physically Vocabulary: present simple tense, adjectives used to describe a person (the color and long of hair, skin complexion, fat, skinny, muscular, ugly, beautiful, etc) IV. Methodology First class: First of all a power point presentation will be presented to the class including famous people that the students know. In order to elicit previous knowledge that the students know they will describe the famous people that will be presented. Then, a reading about physical description will be given in order to give to the students an example of the proper way to describe people. Second class: The second class will start with a presentation of my favorite famous person and the description of him. This will give to the students an example of what to do next. Then, the students will have to create their own presentation choosing their own favorite famous person using all the information previously shown. The students will present their power point presentation to the rest of the class explaining the physical appearance of the famous person chosen. This activity will be formative.
  • 7. V. Resources to be used Describe the ICT (Google resources) to be included in the proposal. Wix.com is a cloud-based development platform that allows users to create HTML5 websites and mobile sites, through the use of their online drag and drop tools. Users can add functionalities such as social plug-ins, eCommerce, contact forms, email marketing, and community forums to their websites using a variety of Wix-developed and third-party applications. (Wikipedia) Google docs is a free web-based office suit offered by Google within its Google Drive service. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating with other users live Google docs combines the features of Writely and Spreedsheets with a presentation program. (Wikipedia) Include the sources for the different materials you are using in the proposal. Why were these materials chosen? Mention the advantage of working with them. Wix.com: I used Wix.com as my academic page. The main reason is that wix.com is so much easier to use in comparison to other sources. Besides, the layout of the page provides the reader an easy understanding of the information and the pages that can be created. Google docs: I used google docs because is a very useful tool that allows the teacher to check students ‘writing and to provide the proper feedback at the same time. Microsoft Word: I used Microsoft Word since is the most common and easy software to use. Also, students are very familiar with the format. Microsoft Power Point: I used Microsoft Power Point because, as I said before, is one of the most common and easy software to use. The students are familiar with the format and it is a more attractive way for the students to present information.
  • 8. VI. Activities The activity is a speaking task where the students have to create a presentation choosing a famous person and then describing it. First, the students have to choose the famous person; secondly, they have to describe that person in a written form using Google docs where I will correct all of them providing feedback to each student. Finally, when the description they have to say is correct they have to learn it and show to the class a power point presentation using a lot of images (as a backup of the physical description they are providing) Reading task (receptive skill) (summative) LessonAim: At the end of the lesson students will be able to comprehend the physical description of a person by reading. Situation: First of all students will read a text about famous people and their physical appearance. The text will describe his/her hair, weight, complexion, etc. The students will answer all the different activities according to the text given. Speaking task (productive skill) (formative) LessonAim: At the end of the class students will be able to describe a famous person physically to the rest of the class, orally. Situation: (individual work) The students will look at my example in a power point presentation where I will describe my favorite famous person (it could be an actor/actress, a singer, one person of a group or band, a football player, etc). Task: (individual work) According to what I presented the students have to choose one famous person. After that, they have to describing the person in Google docs where I will correct them and I will provide the appropriate feedback. Finally, the students have to

  • 11. Final reflexion What is the importance of including ICT resources in the learning process? The importance of including ICT resources in the learning process in my opinion is essential in the acquisition of a second language. When we use ICT’S in the class room it makes easier the process of learn. In terms of teaching using these resources; such as google docs, google drive and others makes a big difference between learning by papers than learning by doing things and interact with others. In my opinion schools should promote the use of ICT to learn, either a second language or another subject. It is important to take an advantage of the technological resources that students have nowadays; such as cell phones , notebooks because they have a wide access to internet. Regarding the use of ICT in TEFL: What have you learned in this course? The use of ICT helps me to realize how to use in an effective way the technological resources in a class room. In our experience it was a little bit difficult to understand some concepts, but then it was just thing of practice. I learnt how to use programs; such as google drive , docs, wix, and others. I always knew about these programs, but I never knew how to use them. Finally at the end of the semester we have to create a webpage, in my personal opinion “Wix” was the best option to create a webpage, it was easy to use and add things.
