VSAT- Very Small Aperture Terminal
1.
2. A Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) is a small
telecommunication earth station that receives and
transmits data, video or voice via satellite.
It is a satellite-based Wide Area Network (WAN),
with centrally managed hub .
The “Very Small” component of
the VSAT acronym refers to the
size of the VSAT dish
antenna-typically about 60 cm to
3.8 m .
3. • Earth segment : This segment is divided into 2 units :
Outdoor Unit (ODU) : It contains the antenna .
Reflector
Feed-Assembly
LNB-F (Optional)
LNB
(Front View)
(Rear View)
4. Indoor Unit (IDU) : It Contains the interface between
the VSAT and the user’s equipment(PC’s , TV’s ,
Telephones) .
SKYSTAR 360E
(Front View) (Rear View)
5. Space segment : A Geostationary earth orbital (GEO)
Satellite with a directional antenna integrated which
revolves around the equator at the same rotational
speed as the earth.
6. An Earth Station acts as a hub . This ES has a very
powerful antenna of 15 to 36 foot wide which employs
routing capabilities and has high-speed connection to
wired backbone in order to serve as a gateway to/from
the VSAT network .
Each end user is interconnected with the ES via
satellite , forming a star tropology .
The hub controls the entire operation of
the network.
For one user to communicate with
another, each transmission has to first go
to hub station and then retransmits it via
the satellite to the other end user’s VSAT.
7.
8. Computer communications ;
Reservation systems ;
Billing systems ;
Electronic mail ;
Video conferencing ;
Point on sale transactions ;
Credit checks and credit card verification ;
Stock control and management .
9. VSAT Advantages :
High flexibility to increase the size of the network in the
future.
Able to integrate large number of the networks.
Covers distant geographical locations.
Ability to handle Voice, Video and Data.
As it is mobile, can be used for short time or in
emergency communication.
VSAT Disadvantages :
Requires clear line of sight between
dish and satellite.
Outages in some cases, because of
the weather. These outages
normally last for a few minutes.
