3. The Future of Technology
Technology as we know it is constantly taking on change. It
seems like almost everyone has a television, a cell phone or even
a video gaming system within their household. Technology is
something that we cannot do without. There are hospital staffs
and their patients relying on modern technology to help predict
what is wrong with them in hopes of helping them find a cure to
the problems, children wanting to watch their favorite cartoons
on the television and also wanting to play their favorite video
games.
Within my project, I have chosen to speak about “Roger’s
Diffusion of Innovations”, “Uses of Gratification Theory” and
“The Principle of Relative Constancy” and also provide pictures
of what communication technology will look like in the future.
4. Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations
Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations- This theory
explains how an innovation is communicated over
time through different channels to members of a
social system. (Grant and Meadows, p.26)
· Innovation is one of the approaches in
Diffusion of Innovations. As technology
changes, so does consumers and their buying
decisions. Before they buy, most consumers look
at what the latest features are within that
technology and compare it to what they already
have. They need to know if the new item is worth
buying or if they should stick with what they
have?
• Another stage is reinvention. Computers just
like anything else become modern with day
and age. Some computers we may look back
and call them dinosaurs because they don’t
move as fast as they do currently. I don’t
believe that there was an option of great
performance and speed until later. This is the
reason consumers purchase
computers, laptops and tablets because of the
processor as well as the Megabytes or
Gigabytes that their hard drive obtains

6. Uses and Gratifications
Uses and Gratifications is a descriptive approach that gives insight
into what people do with technology. Most of the time, users are
actively seeking to use different media to fulfill different needs.
(Grant and Meadows, p.31)
There are different things that people do with the technology of their
choice. When using a cellular phone, a person can talk, text, browse
the internet, video calling and play games.
• Having a cell phone is very useful. People like to play games
on their phones if they are at work and taking a break. Playing
games on a cellular phone is something that people do until
they are able to get home and play with their gaming system.
People like to play video games due to the change in their
technology. When I was growing up, I had an Atari 5200. I love that
gaming system. My next one was a Super Nintendo because my
brother had the Nintendo. It seems like every time some new
invention came out; my parents went out and got it for us.
• Texting is a great tool to have. If you’re at work, there may
be a time when you want to reach out to someone and can’t
use the company phone, sending a message is a great way to
stay connected and communicate without getting caught or
possibly fired.
• There are Social sites that many people visit that have ways
that a person can keep in contact with another person.
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are just a couple of sites that
help keeps people up to date with what is going on with their
loved one.
Years ago, people didn’t have the option of choosing these sites to
stay connected, they had to use their home phones to make long
distance phone calls or either buy a calling card so that the long
distance charges didn’t apply on their phone records.
7. The Principle of Relative Constancy
In the Principle of Relative Constancy most
people spend a constant fraction of their
disposable income on mass media over time.
(Grant and Meadows, p.33)
A lot of the times people like to “keep up with the
Joneses” and purchase newer technology that hits
the market. There have been times where you
would see people standing in long lines at a store
waiting to get inside to purchase the newly
publicized invention.
Times are changing and people know it. Most of
us can’t operate what we already have, let alone
go out and buy a newer component to get use too.
I guess it’s in people’s nature or just an impulse
buy at the moment. All of us have guilty pleasures
and I believe that pleasure isn’t being met without
buying the latest and greatest technologies that hit
the scene.
8. What the future holds
For better security, typing in a pin code to unlock your handset is all
well and good, but it feels a bit old-fashioned to us. Google has
experimented with facial recognition and Motorola has dabbled with
fingerprint unlocking on the Atrix, but so far manufacturers have made
very little effort when it comes to enhancing security on your phone.
These days, retina scanning and fingerprint ID are possible, meaning
that your phone - and the secrets contained within - are better protected.
As phones become virtual wallets, the need for beefier security is going
to become a prime concern for networks, banks and mobile users.

9. What the future holds cont...
Google Glass is almost with us and
both Samsung and Apple are
supposed to be working on
“smartwatches”, which should give
you a clear indication that wearable
tech is going to be massive in 2013
and 2014. There’s a very real chance
that in the not-too-distant
future, mobile phones will cease to be
something you slip into your pocket
but will instead become an object
which is secured to your person at all
times - ensuring that you’re totally
connected, every second of the day.

13. Conclusion
In this class, I have learned a great deal about Communication
Technology, how they operate and will continue to operate in the near future.
The future of Communication Technology is on the rise with bigger and
better things to bring to the face of America and abroad. Most of the
technology that we have today; we label them as being “high tech”. With the
number of years that we have to wait until the upcoming new releases, we
anticipate the day that more change is brought about within the technology
market.
Just like everything, technology will continue to age progress to the newer
generation. Before you know it, everyone will start to seem likethey're living
in the Star Trek Era.
We all are adaptable to change. Until the products of the future hits the
markets, preparing ourselves for the change that is ahead of us is just
something else that we have to sit down and figure out while reading about
them on the internet.
