and actions for the following sessions/weeks
3. In this week, we started off the short film project. We were started off with the introduction, where we had to write a reaction to the initial plans.
The plans were saying about what the short film can and can’t include. Afterwards, we moved on to the presentation, which were explaining the
different aspects of films. This happened on Tuesday. In my initial reaction, I go on to explain what the plans could possibly mean, and how I
could use the plot to make something of my own. By doing the reaction, it started a beginning idea of how I could turn these given instructions
into a short film, which started a build up of an idea. After doing the initial reaction, I constructed three different mind maps. I did have a choice to
make one big mind map which branched off different ideas, but I thought that three separate idea mind maps would help me construct an idea.
The reason for this is because firstly, is spreads my creative ideas down different paths, rather than linking everything together by making three
separate ideas, This method worked for me, as my final idea was linked more clearer, as it is separated from the other ideas that I'm not going to
use. I can choose which one I like the most and develop onto it. I had two ideas based on action, where the first one is a flashback, of two people
running from the cops, and one of the characters gets caught, which is the character having the flashback. This was based on prison break, the
idea that there are two people on the run. The second idea was a war zone action based film, where there are two characters, fighting against
each other. The character throws the bomb, and says the given quote. The last idea was the one my short film will be based on. This was a
fantasy themed mood board. The film is about a character that can teleport to anywhere he wants, until he breaks the watch, ending him to
random locations, and eventually limbo, in which the watch completely shuts down, leaving him stuck in limbo forever. This idea was my
favourite, as it was the most creative one out of the three, as it involves something less original to fighting. The reason why I chose this idea, is
because I would like to see how it would turn out after all of the editing and the effects, to see I can challenge myself into doing something that
will involve a lot of audio, effects, and cuts in-between scenes to make me disappear. Also, it has the most interesting storyline out of the three,
as the second one has a bad ending, as it moves away from the serious side to the comedic side..If I ended up doing one of the action films, I
wouldn’t be creative with it, as there would be lack of special effects to it. After the decision of the third mind map, I made a storyboard with
pictures that would suit each scene. I used the images to show what would step by step happen in the short film.
On Wednesday, we started filming a practice short film. We used the camera and tripod. The camera didn’t have many issues with it, other than it
kept shutting down automatically. Luckily, it wasn’t a big deal, as the footage stayed put. With this, we were in groups, and given a shot list of
what we need to do in each scene, and how we shoot it. There were three empty boxes for us to decide how to end it. With me and my group, we
decided to make the character explain that there are free sausage rolls to the other characters. This was an over-exaturated and comedic ending
to the story, that I believe fitted with the other shot types, as it makes sense for why the character was in a rush. The ending worked and fitted
well. With filming, we had to follow the camera shots given to us. This is the first time getting used to the different shot types. From having a bit of
experience of placing the camera from different distances, I now feel confident for my short film, and where to place the camera (in reason). For
example, long shot to show the character and the surroundings, medium shots and short shots to focus on the character(s) them self(s). With the
space for filming, we did a ELS shot outside the college, where we placed the camera near the bench area (it was a good area, as it showed a
whole landscape of the college). With other scenes, we were in two different hallways, and a lift. The scene spaces were fine, as they were
spacious to fit the camera in. After filming, we uploaded it onto the computer, and imported it to premier pro. On premier pro, there were some
effects I added to the video. One of them was a colour curve effect to the short film. I added a green colour tone to the video. This gave a tense
vibe to the film, teasing the viewers that something is going to happen. The effect ended up working in the final shot, as the video looked like it
was building up to something big. There were some copyright free music which I added to the video. One of them was some lift music to the lift
scene. The music worked well with the scene, as it moves the tension away, and adds normal reality back into the film. I also added some chase
music for the running scenes. This built suspense for the film, and madww you wonder why the character is running.
4. Lastly, the audio task. i was given a movie clip from the film Shaun of the dead, in which I needed to create my own audio for. I went around
college premises, and recorded myself making noises that would fit the scene. I got creative, and stomped around on the floor for the walking
part of the film; I would open and close doors for the fridge scene, and grab and drop a can for when Simon grabs the can. I would then add all of
my sounds to Premier pro. To be honest, I didn’t quite understand the sound adjustment tool on premier pro, as my sounds kept crashing, or
something else didn’t go to plan when I used it. So I had some struggle with the audio adjustment. This is something which I need to learn to do
for my SF, so that I don’t get background rustling noise in my possible recordings. Plus I used garage band for the first time in this project. I had
made my own backing audio for the walking scene. I made a tense and eerie song with a beat rhythm to it. The beat worked well with the Clip,
as it added suspense to the Apocalypse situation. I was also set a task, where I had to write down the key words into making a short film. I talk
about mise en scene, cinematography, editing terminology, and the story. I talk about what is included in each of them from research and
previous notes taken down from lesson. This helped me have an idea of how to direct and plan my film, as it shows me what is included in other
films. I then give examples of how films use each technique. This was so that I could have a demonstration of how to use the specific technique. I
lastly analyse three short films which I had watched. I say three pros about the film, and talk about what I like about it. I talk about the camera
technique, the story etc. this helped me with my short film, as it gives me ideas of the stuff included in the film, which I could include in my film.
What worked well
The camera shots that we filmed worked well. With the shot list telling us how to film the Practice film, the L/M/S shots came out well to say it was
the first time shooting. The cuts of the long to the medium shots came out well, as it fitted with the situation of the film, as the long shot was used
to show the surrounding of the characters walking, and the medium shots were used to show the focus of the character; and I think we
communicated that well in our video. Also, some of the audio used in the SOTD clip worked well. One especially is the can sound I recorded. I
recorded myself picking up and dropping a can on the table. The Sound was uploaded to the clip, and it actually went well with the situation, as it
was mostly in time, and fitted in with the apocalyptic situation.
What didn’t
One thing which didn’t work well would be some of the kit that we were using to film the practice film. It wasn’t a major deal, but the camera kept
cutting off, and the tripod kept slanting to one side. We couldn’t do much about it, as we already started working, so we just went along with it.
Also, the sound adjustments tool wasn’t working with the video in premier pro. The reason is because it was my first time using the tool, and
every time I wanted to add a sound effect to the audio, it would do it to the other audios, making the audio sound rusty, and quiet.
Improvements
If I could improve anything in this week, in which I could do next week, it would be the sound management, in which I can adjust the sound
correctly. I would like to know how to adjust sound properly, so I can do it on my short film. Also, if I could improve something else, it would be my
camera skills. I didn’t really get a chance to direct the camera of where it needs to go, as everything was written on paper for us to do. So I would
like to improve on directing where everything needs to be.
6. In this week of work, we were doing the research stage of the short film project. We started off with doing the experiments slide. With
this, I would evaluate the practice films and audio i did. It was separated into three stages, which were filming, audio and editing. I
would talk about what i did and used in the process of creating; i then talk about the strengths and weaknesses to settle what I'm
good and not so good at. I then go on to talk about what i could use from the practice into my actual Short film. I feel like i structured
the paragraphs well in the section, as it has the description in on part, the strengths and weaknesses in the other. We then did the
secondary research into the target audience. To do this, I looked into three different films, linked with my genre of my short film
(Jumanji, Groundhog day, Star wars) . For researching it, I would look at the age/gender ratings, the budget/box office for the film,
and the user ratings and reviews of the film. For the Age/gender rating, it would tell me which gender and Age that the film suits. The
budget and box office difference tells me how popular the film is, as the box office tells me the amount people spent all together to
watch the film. And the reviews tells me what the public think of the film in their opinions. I would find similarities for each film in the
separate things I look at. From the similarities, I could conclude the target audience for the Genre of the film. I then go on to look at
the primary research. I made an online survey (on survey monkey) to find out what other people think about fantasy. I asked a range
of questions. Fire example age, gender, platform they watch films on, favourite genre etc. the last question was the plot of my film,
and the surveyors would say their opinion on it. The opinions were mostly compliments and approvals; this shows me how the
surveyors understand the storyline. The primary research told me how the surveyors feel about Fantasy, how often they watch films,
how they get films etc. this information helps me understand the interest the genre gets (and who its from) , and the way the films are
watched. I would link my Primary and secondary research together to get a full conclusion to who my target audience is. After the
audience research, I go to look at the BBFC ratings. I went on the website to find a link to the ratings of films. The ratings were
Universal, Parental Guidence,12A/12,15,18 and R18 . It sectioned every rating, and explained what is and isn't included in each one.
For this, it lets me see what my film would be classed by looking at what the link is saying. By the en, I came to the conclusion that
my film is Universal, from seeing what the U films are limited to, and my SF Doesn’t seem to pass that marker. I felt that rating the
film PG would be too unreasoning, as the film doesn’t seem to include anything . After BBFC, I look at three different production
techniques in which I am curious and interested about (or potentially use in my short film). I decided to evaluate a camera technique,
a special effect, and a story telling technique. For research, i would look at different movies that would use the technique, and how
they use it, so i could potentially use it for mine. The way i researched the production, gave me ideas into what i could do to make my
movie better, and more creative. Lastly, the proposal. In this, I talk about what will happen, and what i will do in the project as a
whole. I revile the title of the film, and explain the meaning. I feel like the title works with the film, as it points out the main adjectives
of the film. I conclude my target audience, from the information that the primary and secondary research tells me. The rationale, in
which i explain the experience i have from the past with programs and equipment (from the irn bru project).,I then talk about the
whole concept, in which i talk about the research needed for my film, and the film as a whole in general. I then go on to explain my
production techniques, in which i talk about the editing and effects in which i will use in my film. Lastly, my evaluation, in which i
explain the notes i will make through the process of the short film (for example, the blog and this current slide).
7. What went well
One thing which worked well in this week would be the secondary research. The reason for this is because I
thought that the bbfc rating had help me understand the range of my audience, and it helped my review my film to
see how suitable it is. Also, another strength which I had with the film would be looking up the grossing of films. I
had looked up three fantasy films in order to see how successful they are. This wasn’t a hard process to find, as
all the information was in front of me, and I only needed to conclude what it had said. Also seeing the reviews
helped me see how loved the genre is, and the ratings showed me the main gender and age rating of the film.
What didn’t go well
One thing which didn’t go well would probably have to be the questionnaire. The reason for this would have to be
because of the way it was set out. Some questions didn’t give me enough information, as one optional questions
had the other option, in which I forgot to put the specify box in. the ones who clicked the box never told me their
option, which limited me of knowing the audiences opinion. This was hard for me to conclude, and left me
assuming why they pressed the “other” option. Also, another thing which never went well would be the target
audience proposal. There was information I had to include in it which I didn’t know, and was hard to find out for
example the class of the audience. This took a while to find out, as I had to find out how to watch my film, and the
type of people which are willing to spend to see it. This was a hard process to go through, as I was basing of
information which I didn’t fully know.
Improvements
If I were to improve for this week, it would be the target audience. I have enough information with it, and I would
like to use this information as an advantage improve next weeks work by using the information to sort out my
work. with this It will help me construct my mood board (as I know what the audience are looking for). Also I would
like to improve my time management. I would like to stay more focused on making the power points, and I would
like to organise what to do, so I don’t focus on two things at once during class.
9.
In this week, we started the pre production PowerPoint. It was divided into four sections. I started of with section one, which is talking about my
story. For this, I started off with talking about the development of the film on a word document, in which I needed to fill out some information
about the plot of the film. I start off with talking about what is included in the film, the story o it, then I go on to talk about the relation of the film
with the story circle, where I talk about the situations in the films that relate to the story circle. I put the work onto the PowerPoint. After the
development, I write down the structural breakdown. Instead of evaluating every shot, I talk about every scene, so I can have a clear description
of the scenes, and so I can leave that work for the shot type. I talk about the different types of shots used in the scene, and how it will be used; I
also talk about the audio added on later after editing. After all that, I move onto section 2.in section 2, I pre visualise plan my short film. By this, I
start of with a story and pre visualisation board. With the pre visualisation, I gather a range of images which inspired me to make the Short film. I
get DVD covers/title cards of movies and TV shows to show what seems familiar to my film. I also get pictures of scenes of film to show a before
and after the Abuse of power. I decided to show the scenes to show the bad impact it has, and how my SF links with it. After the visualisation
board, I make two storyboards. One is a gather of images which link to the scenes of the film with annotations, and another is a cartoon
storyboard of what happens in the film. The cartoon was made on story board that, where I could make my own character, and fit him in in
different sceneries. I thought that the storyboard can show what I want to communicate to the audience by making something hand made, to
show creativity, and more detail, and a gather of pictures with analysis, to show what will happen. Before the storyboards, I talk about the key
moments of the film and the feel of it. In the key moments, I drew a sketch up of my idea of the teleporting transition, and the sound that I would
potentially like to have. I feel like hand sketching the ideas shows a more clear explanation of what I would like, as its my design, not copied from
somewhere else. In the annotation, I talk about my inspiration, and the root it came from. By doing this, I can show what started my creative path
in making the film. With the feel slide, I talk about the colour tint that I may use in the film, and the costume and communication of message. I feel
like I explained enough in this section, as I leave props to another slide, and its only talking about the meaning, which I clearly state by giving
examples. Lastly, the shot list. For this, i would list out every shot that will be taken in the film (Long-close ups). I listed the estimated time that the
shots will last for, and talk about the actions that will take place in the shots. I feel like the shot list will give me the best help for filming, as it tells
me all about my directions of where to go, and how to film. After section 2, i move on to the paper work, required for the film (organisation). I start
off with cast and location information. I decided to talk why i casted myself, to show how i have experience with acting, and why i chose certain
people to film. I then talk about the location of the film; which I state about why I picked the location, where it is, and the possible issues I could
have with the location. I then show birds eye views of where the equipment will be placed, to show how everything will be set out. After I sort out
the information, I start the paper work (word documents), with the risk assessment, where I rate the potential issues, say whether those issues
are near filming, and then I talk about the action to take, and how to prevent it. I then sort out the contingency plan, where I talk about what could
go wrong, and then I talk about how I could sort out that problem. This sheet helped me with knowing the potential issues which could happen,
and this could lead me to avoid those problems, as they are my awareness. I then move onto the production slide, which I talk about the work I
will be doing on each days. This slide isn’t fully accurate, as I don’t fully know what is happening on each day. I then move to the call sheets, in
which I talk about the emergency details of the cast, and the time table of production. I feel like the time table adds more pressure onto me, as I’m
not fully sure if I will be spending that amount of time that I wrote in the call sheet. I move on to show proof that I've booked my equipment and
the studio, with a print screen of an outlook message. Lastly, I move onto stage 4, where I talk about the films audio. I talk about some of the
diegetic, and the non diegetic sounds included in my film. I put in sources of sounds from YouTube, and i described the sounds that i would
custom make on garage band.
10. What went well
The thing which went well would be the location birds eye view. The reason this works well is because it is telling
me where specifically to put the equipment in the location when I will be filming, so that I have an idea of how to
set up whilst filming. Also, the shot list and the story development work well together. The reason is because they
tell me the story of the short film, and the shot list helps me with the different and individual camera shots, telling
me how to move and act in every shot, and the story development tells me the full story of each scene, telling me
how the shots should look together.
What didn’t
The things which didn't go well would firstly be the booking. I didn’t get the date I asked for, as I booked quite last
minute, meaning there was less chance of me getting the room on the day. But I never got my requested time,
which leaves me to reorganise my recording and editing time. Also, another thing which didn’t work would be the
soundtrack planning. The reason for this would be is because im not 100% sure that I will be using the audio, as I
may either change my mind, or add more audio to the film. Im not even sure that I will be creating some audio, as
I may not have enough time, or I may decide royalty free is better.
Improvements
If I were to improve for next week, it would be to be more organised. Next week is where I start filming and editing.
Now that I've sorted my shot list and pre production, I would like to use this given information and tick with the
instructions. I would also like to improve the audio. By next week, I would like to know what audio I am definitely
including, and how I will be using it.
13. Filming
Editing
Green screen
Booking issues
In this week, i had started filming my piece of work, and editing it all together. I started on Tuesday where I collect my equipment. I
had issues with booking, as my equipment didn’t go through. I had to sort out the issue by scavenging the equipment that i needed,
by asking people if they weren’t using the equipment. I luckily got the equipment needed after an hour. After i received my equipment,
I started filming My short film. I started with the lift scene that took about 20 minutes to film. I had followed my Shot list, and directed
where the camera will be placed. I would also re act scenes multiple times, so that I have multiple scenes to choose from. After
filming in the corridor, i move on to the classroom scene. I add the maths board to the back for background to show that the setting is
a classroom. I did both classroom scenes in one go, so that i dont have to go back later. I did it whilst students were in doing work.
This worked for the scene, as it gave a more study environment to the scene. One camera technique which i include in the scene is a
dolly shot. I didn’t have the correct kit to do it, so i had to improvise. Id decided to put the camera and tripod on a wheelie chair. My
camera operator would push the chair to me, whilst zooming out. The shot came out successful at the end. After the classroom
scene, i moved onto the canteen. I pre bought a chocolate bar from the canteen for this scene, so i can grab it from the machine. I
angled the camera towards the machines, so there is a clear shot of the main item of the scene. I Did do an attempt scene of
throwing the chocolate bar in mid air, and cut it during editing. After i did the canteen scene, i had done the first half of the filming, i
exported it to my computer and uploaded it to premier pro. The next day, I had booked the green screen studio. there were issues
with this booking, as i may have booked it for the wrong day. I did get the situation sorted by re booking it for Wednesday afternoon.
With the green screen, i filmed all of my scenes as a long shot landscape (except for the close up watch). I did this so that i am not
limited to space, so i can move my hands about. The watch was a close up to show its damage. After filming for half an hour, i
exported the footage to premier pro. I then started editing. I had downloaded the lightning ball, and cut the scenes to fit it in. I made it
expand and decrease in size during the transition. This gave a vacuum style effect, making out the character was sucked to another
location. I also added some recordings (vending machine and the lift button). This amplifies the invisible sound, and it shows what
noise the character is making. I added a slow motion effect to the water bottle drop scene. This gave tension and suspense to the
situation, and i feel like it ended up working, as it feels like time goes slowly when you witness something break. I would add tension
music to fit with the scene. This builds up the up the suspense, and fits in with the zooming in reaction of shock. i also coloured in the
electric ball in the broken scene. this represents the watch being broken, as the colour matches the spark colours which showed the
watch was broken. With the green screen backgrounds, i went onto YouTube for the desert one. I had to go into after effects for this,
so that i could key out the green surrounding the character. I then get a picture of a snowy mountain for the background in the next
scene, which I'm finishing next week.
14. What went well
The first thing that well would be the time management. Filming time around the college only happened on the
first half of the day. This was good, as it gave me an extra three hours to start editing the first half of the film and
research into the special effects which I can use and key out. Also, another thing which went well would be
equipment usage. There wasn’t any issue with the equipment I was using, and using it was fine. There was
something which specially worked well with filming, and that would be the dolly shot. We didn’t have the correct
equipment to do one, so we had to put the camera on a wheelie chair and push it forwards whilst zooming out.
The output of the footage worked well, and came out like the dolly scene in Jaws.
What didn’t
The things which didn’t work this week would firstly be booking of equipment and booking of the green screen
studio. The reason is because my booking got muddled up, meaning the equipment was booked for the wrong
day. This lead me to have to scavenge for other peoples equipment for a certain amount of time, waiting an hour
of potential time. I had the same issue with the green screen, as it was booked for the morning and not the
afternoon as I wanted it. Another thing which didn’t work would be creating my audio. The reason for this is
because I took too long to find what I wanted, and I took time making the sound too; whereas royalty free music
was a better option, as it has the sound effects pre made.
Improvements
I haven't finished editing yet so my first improvement would be for editing the film. I would like to improve the
canteen scene by fixing the shot scene. I want to make it less obvious that I'm hiding a continuity error. By this I
want to keep the scene the same shot the whole time, whilst hiding the error. Also, I want to improve on the
Chroma keying the footage. For next week, I would like to remove the shadows in the background of the chroma
key footage before Tuesday; so that I can get on with my evaluation.
16. In this week, I started off with adding the finishing touches to my film. I was editing the final touches to my film. I was making my title sequence
which was made on after effects. I had added in the limbo scene and sorted out the Antarctic scene. For the Antarctic scene I had added the
lightning ball, and colour curved the character to be more pale, to fit in with the cold environment. For the limbo, I had keyed out the background
for my character, and tried hardest to remove the shadows by cropping the sides out. I illustrated that my watch had ran out of battery by motion
tracking a low battery sign to the watch to show the audience what has happened. After I finished editing, I uploaded the video to my YouTube
channel, and started on writing the evaluation on the stage 6 PowerPoint. I started with talking about the research evaluation, in which I state the
strengths and weaknesses of the research which I had done. I talk about with the strengths what research helped my the most and which was the
most easiest to get my hands on. I talk about which work helped me the most for making the film. I then talk about the weaknesses. I talk about
which research was hard to find. I talk about the primary research, and how I didn’t write down the questions properly. I feel like I needed to note
down that my primary research wasn’t specific, to show how hard it was to get the information from it. I included the improvements in my
weakness statements. This was a better constructed paragraph as it shows how to improve the weakness, instead of talking about improving
something different. I move onto the planning slide. I structured it the same way with my strengths and weakness, with the strength talking about
hat helped me and what was easy to plan, and the weaknesses talking about what didn’t help as much, and what was hard to plan. For
hardness, I talk about equipment booking. I felt like this need to be said, as it was a real problem for me, as it delayed working time. I also talked
about the improvements in the weakness paragraph. After the planning, I talk about organisation. This paragraph was structured differently. I
instead talk about how time was managed, and what I did to manage it. I then talk about what I would do if I had additional time. I talk about the
time I spent on each power point, and what I would re organise my time if I were to have additional time to my project. The next part was the
similarities and differences stage of the evaluation. It was separated into three different technical quality's (camera, editing and audio). For the
layout for each, I put a picture of the scenes from the mine and one other short film, in which I split the three pages into two. One side would
include strengths an the other was for the differences. I thought that it would make the work more organised rather than having points spread out
from everywhere. After the similarities and differences, I talk about how I reached to my target audience. For this, I would screen shot information,
and a picture from the SF and table down how I reached the target audience. I thought that linking graphics to scenes would show proof that I've
reached my target audience, as I'm showing what they have asked for. I talk about in the separate points how I reached to my target audience,
and which specific bits appealed to them. For that I talked about what I did, and what I included. The first bit was the VFX, in which I explain what
effects I included to please the audience. Secondly the surprise element, in which I talk about the way I structured my storyline to make it
unexpected. Next, the source, in which I explain how the audience will find the film easy, as its on YouTube (streaming site) and not having to
buy it on dvd. The last evaluation was the peer. I had gotten three people to evaluate my SF. Two were students and one was my sister (outer
public). The evaluators gave a paragraph over parts of the film which were good and a paragraph of parts that could be better. I then had to talk
about the bits which I agree and disagree with. This helped me for the next slide, as it help me realise what extra I could have potentially added
to my film to make it better. The next slide is talking about how I could change my film. I felt like the slide helped me realise what I could have
done to make it look better, and what I could potentially do if I were to do this again.
17. What Went Well
The first thing that went well in this week would be the peer evaluation. I feel like I got the right people to evaluate
as one of them was not a member of the class. This was handy as I can see what someone thinks of the film, from
the public side, and not the critic side. Also, the given constructive criticism helped me realise what I could
potentially do next time if I were to film again, developing my skills better. Also, another thing which worked well
would be the final product of the short film. I was happy with the final version of my film, and uploading it. Lastly,
the thing which worked well would be recapping on the time management, the research and the planning. The
reason is because im stating the stuff which I was good at and what I wasn’t good at with the three. This benefited
me as I state my mistakes in which I can improve for next time.
What didn’t
The thing which didn’t potentially work would firstly be the comparison task. I Struggled with comparing the films
as they had different techniques that weren’t similar to mine. They had the minor similarities, but nothing major. I
struggled figuring out why the other film used the specific technique. Also, another thing which didn’t work would
be seeing what I disagree with in the peer evaluation. I was limited to what I disagree with, as there was a lot I
agreed with (criticism and compliments), in which I wanted to improve on. There was only one thing i could
possibly criticise, in which I state.
Next time
Since this is my last week, there isn’t anything I can improve for next week. Instead I will state what I would do if I
would do it again. If I were to anything again differentially, I would be more organised with slides. I would firstly
book equipment earlier so that I have a better chance of getting my requested day, and I would read over my
booking status so that I can confirm I laced the right dates. I would also do my questionaire differently. I would put
more optional questions so that I can have a bar chart of information rather than t=random answers swatted on a
page.
