  • I like this a lot. I do have a question though - why is the third row not measurable? E.g. "Send out probe droids" becomes a Key Result of the Objective "Find 3 Rebel Bases", but it is not measurable. This is a challenge I've encountered when trying to 'link up' Objectives and KRs up and down a hierarchy. Objectives are often necessarily worded as non-measurable, inspirational goals (e.g. Conquer the Galaxy), but then need to become KRs for the tier above, suddenly making their wording unsuitable.

OKRs, Explained with "Star Wars"

  1. 1. OKRs, Explained with Star Wars by Andrew Cedotal Director of Product & Design @ Casetext andrew.cedotal@gmail.com
  2. 2. What are OKRs? OKRs are goals that you set based on your manager’s goals.
  3. 3. Why use OKRs? Because while managers might know what needs to happen… ...their reports know how to make it happen.
  4. 4. OBJECTIVE: Conquer the Galaxy
  5. 5. Can we make this measurable? How about...
  6. 6. Yep, sounds like that supports “Conquer the Galaxy!”
  7. 7. Can we make this both measurable AND ambitious? How about...
  8. 8. Hey, that’s great! That would get us really close to “Conquering the Galaxy.”
  9. 9. As your head of weapons research, who knows a little bit more about the subject than you do, I propose we rewrite this as....
  10. 10. Oh, wow, a PLANET-DESTROYING superweapon? Good rewrite; that goal is way better than the one I had before.
  11. 11. Here’s the key: Your Objectives ARE Your manager’s Key Results. OKRs are recursive, so everyone is synced around company-wide goals.
  12. 12. What does this mean for me?
  13. 13. Good Key Results are...
  14. 14. Good Key Results are... 1. Measurable
  15. 15. 1. Measurable 2. Ambitious Good Key Results are...
  16. 16. 1. Measurable 2. Ambitious 3. Mostly written by you, not a manager Good Key Results are...
  17. 17. One essential point...
  18. 18. OKRs are not performance evaluation.
  19. 19. My boss Queen Isabella wants me to make a lot of money for the Spanish monarchy. Hmmm...
  20. 20. What if I do it by discovering a new route to China?
  21. 21. Oh crap.
  22. 22. Well, I learned something new along the way, maybe I can still achieve the original purpose of the Key Result...
  23. 23. Whew!
