Establishing the Lyle School District As the National Model for Rural Excellence: Supporting ALL children, Ensuring an Equality in Outcome!
Superintendent Entry Plan: The First 100 Days
Introduction
The Lyle Board of Directors has charged me, as incoming superintendent, with improving the educational
outcomes for ALL students and ensuring that Lyle School District becomes a model district, with model schools,
meeting the needs of each of our students, our communities’ most valuable and precious resource.
The Board’s Vision statement: “First and foremost, student success is our top priority!” sets a clear tone for what we should be about
in the Lyle School District. The challenge is that, in all conversations and in review of our current documentation and evidence, it is
clear that, though our staff have been working extremely hard, the systems and structures to ensure student success have not been in
place. Every student within the Lyle School District deserves the finest teaching and school experience possible. It is our moral
obligation to provide that and my moral obligation to lead that work.
Over the next 100 days, my goal as superintendent will be to adequately assess and immediately work to rectify any and all
circumstances where “student success” is not governing our work. This lens along with my work history as a turnaround building
leader will allow us, as a district, to build a plan that will ensure that each of our sons’/daughters’ needs are not only met but that we
support ALL children, as if they were our own, ensuring an equality in outcome for each of the students who rely on our school
system for their future success!
Goals
1. To establish a respectful, positive district culture centered on teaching and learning. (Grade level
literacy and performance in all subject areas; Positive Ambassadors for Lyle School District)
2. To focus all improvement efforts on continuous growth, mindful of grade level standards and
proficiency. (Data protocols for monitoring student success)
3. To grow the fiscal health of our district ensuring an adequate ending fund balance and developing
systems and structures to regularly update the infrastructure of our district on behalf of our students.
4. To align all district systems and structures for fiscal efficiency and educational outcomes for children at
the core. (CCSS Implementation with Fidelity)
5. To shift the “ethos” of Lyle School District to eliminate out of district transfers, encourage transfers into
our district, and ensure that a mindset of service and positive outcomes for all students permeates all our
work, regardless of position. (Positive Ambassadors for Lyle School District)
Goals = Action
1. To establish a respectful, positive district culture centered on teaching and learning.
 1:1 meetings with all board members to ensure goal alignment
 Weekly classroom walkthroughs in all district classrooms to assess level of rigor and
instruction
 Initiate TPEP process to set student growth goals with all teachers by Oct. 31, 2015
Establishing the Lyle School District As the National Model for Rural Excellence: Supporting ALL children, Ensuring an Equality in Outcome!
Superintendent Entry Plan: The First 100 Days
 Develop professional development plan by campus, and with each teacher to ensure
adequate support and professional development to reach teaching goals
 Create intervention plan at Dallesport and Lyle MS/HS to ensure that “learning” is being
assessed, evaluated, and accelerated
 By November, 30, ensure that all students within Lyle School District have a developed
“Student Success Plan”
 Individual meetings with district stakeholders to listen, learn, and understand current
issues
 Individual meetings/conversations with community stakeholders to listen, learn, and
understand current issues.
2. To focus all improvement efforts on continuous growth, mindful of grade level standards and
proficiency.
 Ascertain through data review the current levels of proficiency to ensure that we are able
to set clear district, building and student level benchmarks.
 Ensure that all teachers know and understand what grade level standards are for their
content area.
 Ensure that all teachers, regardless of background, know and understand what grade level
writing “looks like” and that they are able to ensure grade level writing within their own
classroom instruction.
 Differentiate to ensure that every child receives “just right” instruction. Students
performing above grade level and students at grade level must continue to gain at least one
year’s worth of growth per year. Students performing below grade level must be
challenged and supported to grow more than one year in a single year to ensure they are
accelerated to grade level standard.
 Support teacher and classified staff growth in alignment with bargained language and
tools.
 Re-align district/building improvement efforts to include:
o Dallesport ES Building Leadership Team-monthly meetings to ensure ongoing
growth and development of every child at Dallesport ES. Make system/structural
decisions to drive the rapid improvement of Dallesport ES ensuring that each
student is prepared for the transition to middle/high school.
o Lyle MS/HS Leadership Team-monthly meetings to ensure ongoing growth and
development of every child at Lyle MS/HS. Make system/structural decisions to
drive the rapid improvement at Lyle MS/HS ensuring that every child graduates
college and career ready.
Establishing the Lyle School District As the National Model for Rural Excellence: Supporting ALL children, Ensuring an Equality in Outcome!
Superintendent Entry Plan: The First 100 Days
3. To grow the fiscal health of our district ensuring an adequate ending fund balance and developing
systems and structures to regularly update the infrastructure of our district on behalf of our
students.
 Work collaboratively with budget analyst and board to adopt a 2015-16 operating budget.
 Assess and create a plan to provide the learning “tools” necessary to ensure that our
teachers and students are able to deliver a world class education.
 Create a long-term facility maintenance and upgrade plan to support our district
infrastructure.
 Create a long-term transportation maintenance and upgrade plan to support our district
transportation fleet.
 Create a long-term grounds maintenance and upgrade plan to support our district grounds
both in terms of student safety and aesthetic appeal.
 Work with ESD consultants to evaluate long term bond/levy implications for Lyle School
District.
 Create a fiscal plan to grow our ending fund balance by at least $50,000 by the end of the
2015-16 fiscal year.
4. To align all district systems and structures for fiscal efficiency and educational outcomes for
children at the core.
 Work to understand district systems and structures and ensure alignment with
measureable educational outcomes.
 Assess, evaluate and adjust when necessary to ensure the most efficient practices, systems
and structures to support measureable educational outcomes for every child.
 Facilitate a retreat of our board of directors and continually engage in collaborative
leadership to ensure we’re working as an extended team with the greatest efficiency for the
greatest results.
5. To shift the “ethos” of Lyle School District to eliminate out of district transfers, encourage
transfers into our district, and ensure that a mindset of service and positive outcomes for all
students permeates all our work, regardless of position.
 Support all Lyle employees in creating a “Code of Cooperation” which will create a
standard for adult to adult interactions and adult to student interactions.
 Work with the Lyle community to “re-brand” our schools and district in a positive way,
celebrating the many successes experienced by our educators and students on a daily basis.
 Create programs and opportunities that encourage all stakeholders with school aged
children to “Choose Lyle” because Lyle School District is the most positive option for ALL
kids within our district boundaries.
Establishing the Lyle School District As the National Model for Rural Excellence: Supporting ALL children, Ensuring an Equality in Outcome!
Superintendent Entry Plan: The First 100 Days
 Improve all district communications-direct mail, email, website presence, Facebook,
Twitter, etc.
 Work collaboratively with the board of directors, district staff, and community
stakeholders to craft a new strategic plan to launch our work in 2016-17.
