8. Step 1:
Select 1 image from your selection of portrait images which you are happy with and
would like to manipulate within photoshop.
Open photoshop, go to FILE then NEW.
You will need you give your image a NAME, change WIDTH to – 210mm x HEIGHT 297mm
(A4) and press OK. You should now have a white rectangle on the screen.
Step 2:
Next go to FILE and select
PLACE, this will now bring
up a box where you can
select the image from the
file that you saved it to.
Click PLACE and the image
should appear in the
rectangle you created in PS.

9. Step 3:
Next select IMAGE from the top bar, then select GRAYSCALE. You may be asked if you want
to RASTERIZE the image - click ok, or FLATTEN image, select DONT FLATTEN for this option.

10. Step 4: Select IMAGE again from the top bar
then ADJUSTMENTS and
BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST the more contrast the
better.
Next select IMAGE then ADJUSTMENTS and
select POSTERIZE from the list, play with the
settings until you get a texture you are happy
with.
Step 5:
Select the MAGIC WAND tool from the left hand side tool bar. You MUST make sure that you
only have the back ground layer selected while you select the magic wand tool.
Holding down the SHIFT key right click on
the mouse using the magic wand tool the
areas that you what to select, these will be
the same tone/shade or colour for your final
outcome.
Right click on the mouse once you have
selected the areas you want and choose
LAYER VIA COPY.

11. Step 6:
To insert colour select IMAGE then MODE then CMYK colour.
Now using the paint bucket change the different tones to different colours.
Try complimentary colours, or try different tones of the same colour.

12. Further task:
Repeat the image 6 times, resize so the images so that they are half the size. Repeat
this process 6 times to get 6 different colour ways. See the work of Andy Warhol as
reference.
IMPORTANT FACTS TO REMEMBER
Photoshop works in layer’s, so if you want to create a new layer always go back and
select the background.
Once you have selected the area you want with the magic wand tool remember to
right click to save the layer.
If you are using the colour tonal range for you r image remember to select the paint
bucket tool before going on to the next layer.
SAVING YOUR WORK
If your work is NOT FINISHED, save as a PSD file if it is finished then save as a JPEG
file.
