Recurrent themes emerged • How do we know we are
delivering ‘best practice’ of our
own, as librarians in the
commissioning field?
• How should we navigate the
resources we have available to
us when answering enquiries,
providing current awareness
and undertaking literature
searches?
• How can we be sure we are
not missing vital resources?
3. What was available?
• Bibliographic databases
• NLH Specialist Collections (Commissioning /
Health Management)
• Primary care google list
Librarians got together - pooling their working
knowledge, experience, ideas and ‘favourites’
lists

7. Feedback about the Handbook
• Two surveys:
– October 2010 (70 responses)
– May 2012 (27 responses)
• Results were similar:
– Valuable tool
• we need to keep it current and relevant
– Support for it to continue as the organisational landscape
continues to change
• we need to convert support to active involvement
– Many librarians don’t know about it
• publicity is key

services disrupted

9. The need is still there..
Developing CCGs: “Towards Authorisation”
NHS Commissioning Board, 2011
‘The organisation and its leaders (should be) equipped with
the knowledge they need or an understanding of where
they can find that knowledge.’

a critical, evidence-based approach that extends beyond
your practice into your local commissioning discussions”
Anne Gray

Notas del editor
National Library Review, Peter Hill 2008:
Recommendation 30: Primary Care Trusts must implement the recommendation that health library and knowledge services should be part of core business, but it is for them to decide how best to do this.
Recommendation 33: Primary Care Trusts will ensure that all their contracts, Local Development Agreements and SLAs refer to the use and application of best available evidence by their commissioned providers.
WCC launched Dec 2007
Needs assessment
Collaborative
At a time of World Class Commissioning
Current – pages about CCGs, Coalition gvt policies
Not enough people were contributing – majority of new entries were CL – collaborative aspect not working
Need to make sure CCGs etc know we are there and can help, also need to develop tools to support commissioners.
HEE Library & Knowledge Services Leads Group (LKSL) Service Development Group (formerly SHALL SDG)
SDG – “provides professional guidance and leadership on service improvement, and the development and implementation of a range of projects and services to ensure the delivery of high quality outcomes that support the core business objectives of the NHS, and the LKSL Group. “
Handbook now supported by HEE Library & Knowledge Services Leads Group (LKSL) Service Development Group (formerly SHALL SDG)
SDG – “provides professional guidance and leadership on service improvement, and the development and implementation of a range of projects and services to ensure the delivery of high quality outcomes that support the core business objectives of the NHS, and the LKSL Group. “
Why change the platform?
No longer a need to have a wiki as the experience of the recent past was that very few actively contributed
Added functionality eg people being able to subscribe and receive email updates
More up to date feel
Ease of use for visitors
Easier to manage - better editing functions
Better for search engines
Option for making the site an nhs.uk site rather than being out of the fold
We had feedback from one of the questionnaires asking why it wasn't a conventional website
I think also, as soon as the group at the workshop saw the prototype, they seemed to be enthusiastic about changing over.
