Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering

  1. 1. JAMIA MOHAMMEDIYAH EDUCATION SOCIETY MUMBAI’S Maulana Mukhtar Ahmad Nadvi Technical Campus, Malegaon. Abdul Latif Ali Al Shaya Faculty of Engineering & Technology Department of Civil Engineering 2018-2019 A Seminar On Artificial Intelligence in Civil EngineeringPresented By: Ansari Usama usamaalfawork@gmail.com
  2. 2. We’re at dawn of new age in human history, there have been four major historical eras defined by the we work, “The hunter gatherer age”, “Agricultural age”, “Industrial Age” and “Information Age” and now today we are at the cusp of our next great era as a species “The Augmented Age”. In this new era, our natural human capabilities are to be augmented by computational systems that help you think, robotics system that help you make, and digital nervous system that connects you to the world far beyond our natural senses.
  3. 3. WHAT IS AI?
  4. 4. Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.
  5. 5. History of A.I The field of AI research was born at a workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956, The term Artificial Intelligence was coined by John McCarthy Dartmouth College John McCarthy
  6. 6. • Deep Blue became the first computer chess-playing system to beat a reigning world chess champion, Garry Kasparov, on 11 May 1997 • In 2011, a Jeopardy! quiz show exhibition match, IBM's question answering system, Watson, defeated the two greatest Jeopardy! champions, Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings • In March 2016, AlphaGo won 4 out of 5 games of Go in a match with Go champion Lee Sedol • Google Assistant is an artificial intelligence-powered assistant developed by Google installed on more than 400 million devices
  7. 7. WHY SHOULD WE USE A.I? • Creativity • Speed • Accuracy • Efficiency • Economics • Automation Most Economical and Creative Designs beyond our imagination in no time.
  8. 8. HOW A.I WORKS? AI works by combining large amounts of data with fast, iterative processing and intelligent algorithms, allowing the software to learn automatically from patterns or features in the data. AI is a broad field of study that includes many theories, methods and technologies.
  9. 9. Traits Or Capabilities • Reasoning, Problem Solving • Knowledge Representation • Planning • Learning (Machine learning) • Natural Language Processing • Perception • Motion and Manipulation • Social intelligence
  10. 10. • Generative Design • Expert Systems • Fuzzy Logic • Building Information Method (BIM)
  11. 11. Tools: • Search and Optimization • Logic • Probabilistic Methods for Uncertain Reasoning • Artificial Neural Network Feature detection helps AI compose informative abstract structures out of raw data Self-driving car system use a neural network, rectangular prisms that must be avoided
  12. 12. Application of A.I: • Design and Construction Industry • Healthcare • Automotive • Finance and economics • Government • Military • Audit • Advertising • Art
  13. 13. Application of A.I in Civil Engineering: • Designing • Planning • Construction • Management • Maintenance • Analysis and Optimization
  14. 14. Current State of A.I: • Airbus used Generative Design to design aeroplane’s partition and successfully designed partition that have same strength as regular parts but reduced its weight by 50%, it is in use in manufacturing of Airbus A320. • Laarman’s most ambitious project, a 40-foot 3D-printed steel bridge that will span an Amsterdam canal. 3D Printed Cabin Partition of Airbus A320 3D Printed Steel Bridge in Amsterdam by Laarman with MX3D
  15. 15. • Kespry offers an accurate PPK (Post Processed Kinematic), fully integrated (hardware and software) and completely automated solution. • XtreeE develops advanced large-scale 3D printing technology for the architectural design, engineering and construction sector. XtreeE, pairs generative design and 3D printing to produce complex and stunning building sections. • 3D Robotics (3DR) and Autodesk have announced that 3DR’s drones which will be directed toward construction, telecom companies, survey, mapping, energy and infrastructure industries. 3DR has released Site Scan software, providing one-click data collection and processing that’s integrated with popular Autodesk design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InfraWorks, Navisworks, and Revit
  16. 16. Tesla is already selling self driving cars that uses Tesla Autopilot, And Tesla Model 3 became the Safest Car Ever tested By NHTSA, Sophia is a social AI based humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong based company Hanson Robotics. Tesla Model 3 Sophia was activated on February 14, 2016 and made its first public in mid-March 2016 in Austin, Texas, United States. It is able to display more than 50 facial expressions Sophia
  17. 17. Big Companies that are working on A.I Google AI IBM DeepMind AlphaGo Hanson Robotics AIBrain ANKI Facebook Omron
  18. 18. Future Scope: Artificial intelligence will be the next huge wave to engulf our industry – using the vast data banks built up on our projects, supplemented by terabytes of easily accessible data from providers like Google and a myriad of other data providers that will emerge A.I has unimaginable potential. Its just matter of time that we will start to see its capabilities in few years, we are already witnessing A.I taking place in our daily life like Google Assistant and Self driving cars like Tesla (that proved to be safest car ever made)
  19. 19. Quotes about A.I: “Over the course of next 20 years more will change around the way we do our work than its happened in last 2000 years, in fact I think we are at dawn of new age in human history.” Maurice Conti, Chief Innovation Officer, Alpha. “The relationship between human intelligence and artificial intelligence will necessarily be one of symbiosis. The challenge and potential of exploring this co-evolutionary future is the biggest story of the next century and one in which a closeness in development velocity is a necessity.” Bryan Johnson, CEO of Kernel.
  20. 20. “Ultimately, AIs will dematerialize, demonetize and democratize all of these services, dramatically improving the quality of life for 8 billion people, pushing us closer towards a world of abundance.” Peter Diamandis, Greek American engineer, physician, and entrepreneur. “Artificial intelligence would be the ultimate version of Google. The ultimate search engine that would understand everything on the web. It would understand exactly what you wanted, and it would give you the right thing. We're nowhere near doing that now. However, we can get incrementally closer to that, and that is basically what we work on.” Larry Page, American computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur who co-founded Google “Some people call this artificial intelligence, but the reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of artificial intelligence, I think we'll augment our intelligence.” Ginni Rometty, American business executive. She is the current chair, president, and CEO of IBM
  21. 21. Conclusion: Artificial Intelligence will change Civil Engineering and every designing field drastically, the designing techniques and methods that we know today today will no longer be in use in few decades, Artificial intelligence technology will change with each passing day, so it’s possibilities and it has unimaginable potential in every field, and in civil engineering field will have a broad prospect. Artificial intelligence can help inexperienced users solve engineering problems, can also help experienced users to improve the work efficiency, and in the team through the artificial intelligence technology to share the experience of each member.
