Motivation
Need for a device to interface to Smart Meter at Home and make the energy
data available over Internet
– Remote Energy monitoring for a Green Home
– Billing data for Utility Provider
– Demand-supply response through real-time feedback to user
– Control Home Electrical Appliances Remotely over Internet
Drawback of existing solutions
Small display screen of Smart Meter Devices
High-cost of the Gateway Equipment (mostly PC)
High Energy consumption of the Gateway Equipment (need for 24x7 ON)
Not easy-to-use for non computer-savvy users

Solution Approach
• Use Home Television as Ubiquitous medium to display energy consumption data
• Interface to the Energy Meter through a Over-The-Top (OTT) box using USB
based Zigbee / RS 485
• OTT box connected to Internet via standard Broadband
• Low-cost and Low-power main design criteria for OTT Box
• OTT box to additionally provide Infotainment functionalities like Media Player and
Browser
• Simple TV Remote based UI on TV for non-computer-savvy users
• Posting of Energy Meter Data to a Internet Portal for analytics and interfacing to
Utility Provider

HEIG Software Architecture
Controller
Heart of the system – manages all modules
Data Collector
Reads the energy data from smart meter at regular timing interval
and pushes it to the Data management Module.
Implements the MODBUS protocol to talk to the Smart Meter.
Data Manager
Validates the data received from the energy meter and store in
the repository as per daily, weekly and monthly basis.
Also calculates the energy consumption price based on the tariff
received from the Energy Utility provider.
Utility Communicator
Used to upload the data to the utility portal.
Appliance Controller
Used for controlling the different devices using Zigbee/MODBUS
to switch ON/OFF the different appliances.
