Gap Inc. is currently manufacturing clothing in Myanmar, which started in
2014 to some backlash. According to the Huffington Post, “Gap will be making
clothes for its Old Navy and Banana Republic brands in two South Korean-
pg. 3
owned factories in Myanmar.” This country has been known as for its terrible
working conditions, as well as underpaying and mistreating their employees.
(Bhasin.)

niche marketing is concentrating on a specific segment of the population.

tactics, they place advertisements that display fashionable and trendy
merchandise in order to appeal to those consumers who want to look stylish.
Within their multiple brands, such as Old Navy and Banana Republic, Gap Inc.
can appeal to consumers at any stage of their life. (Swanson.)

Differentiation
The major difference between Gap Inc. and Express would be the fact
that Express does not have any merchandise that is for children. Another
difference is that Gap Inc.’s merchandise is geared more towards a casual
lifestyle, while Express does offer a lot of merchandise that is for young
professionals. With J. Crew, there are not that many differences with Gap Inc.
Both brands market towards the whole family, provides a sophisticated and
casual style of merchandise and price points are close. One difference
between Gap Inc. and J. Crew could be their target markets; it seems as
though J. Crew’s target market could be for an older generation, such as ages
35 to 45 years old.
Philosophy
Gap Inc.’s philosophy is for consumers to wear clothes they are
passionate about and express their personal style. I can relate to this as an
employee because my fashion and personal style is always evolving. As I’m
getting older, I’m discovering more and more each day what I’m comfortable
in.
pg. 7
Trending Report
Our target market consists of consumers, female and male, with ages
ranging from 18 to 28 years old. Consumers in this age range are either currently
enrolled in college or recent graduates with their Bachelor’s and/or Master’s
Degrees. The average annual income of these individuals is around $46,900 to
$59,600. (“Income of Young Adults.”)
Denim trends that are currently sought after by our target market include
skinny/slim fit, flared bottoms, boyfriend fit for women, overalls, gray denim,
ripped/distressed denim and white denim. Skinny and slim fit denim has been a
trend for many recent years, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere. They
are popular with both male and female consumers, and can be worn casual or
dressed up. The 70’s have influence in denim trends with the flared bottoms look.
The gray denim can be considered more casual than a black jean, and comes
in vary many shades of gray. Boyfriend fit can be worn relaxed or dressed up.
They are perfect for pairing with a blazer and heels for a more sophisticated
look, or with a tee and tennis shoes for a relaxed look. Ripped and distressed
denim can be worn and styled different ways, with distressing being strategically
placed. White denim is clean, and can be worn many different ways. They can
be worn with distressing, boyfriend fit, slim/skinny fit or flared. (Wasilak.)
T-shirt trends for the target market include rock band shirts, graphic tees,
basic tees, and oversized boyfriend fit tees for women. The rock band shirts and
graphic tees can be edgy and fun. These pieces can be worn casually with
some denim, or women can wear them with a skirt or denim. The tees can also
be styled with a jacket or cardigan. Basic tees are simple, yet chic, tops for our
target market and can serve as a go to for any occasion. They can be dressed
up with a scarf or other accessory, or worn casually. The same goes for the
oversized boyfriend tees for women; they can be worn casually with a denim
vest and leggings, or with skinny jeans, heel and bold accessories for a night out.

T-Shirt
• Front and Back: Men’s
(“Flat Spec.”)
V-Neck t-shirts are a popular fit among men and women; therefore we will
incorporate them into our collection. These shirts will come in a wide array of
colors, including neutrals and hues to match the season. T-shirts will be made
with two different fits-the classic fit and slim fit. Some consumers may not want to
wear their tops fitting closely to their body, so we will incorporate both fits into
the collection.

Women’s jeans will come with different waistlines and lengths, such as low rise,
mid-rise and high rise. These women consumers come in all shapes and sizes,
and we would like to create jeans to fit their personal preferences. Low rise jeans
are worn at the hips below the natural waist. Mid-rise jeans range from 9 to 11
inches and are worn at the natural waist. High rise jeans are longer than 10
inches and are worn above the natural waist. (McGoff.)
pg. 20
Fit is a very important factor when it comes to manufacturing jeans. This can
affect how people’s height is perceived. Also, there are many types of shapes
and sizes when it comes to the body, therefore different fits, rises and styles are
needed in order to attract the most consumers.

T-Shirts
Many of the shirts that will be produced will be similar in styles and consist
of classic fits. The women’s line of t-shirts will consist of some more range when it
comes to the styling of the tops. Cotton will be the textile for the majority of the
t-shirts, and some of the textiles may be blended with polyester. These two fibers
are two of the most widely used in production of shirts, and will be strong, easy
to dye, easy to care for, and be able to last a long time. The tops will be woven
with the most common type of construction-the plain weave. This type of weave
is durable and inexpensive to produce. (Garg.) The shirts will be constructed with
a front piece, back piece and the two sleeves. From there, they will be stitched
together.
• Print Fabric Swatches
Prints that will be incorporated into the t-shirt collection include polka dots,

Closing Statement
All of the aspects learned in this course can assist with developing clothing
lines and deciding what types of styles to be sold in stores. This course has also
helped to ensure that details are paid attention to. The goal for any clothing
collection is to be successful, and in order to be successful, the merchandiser
needs to provider clothing that will be appealing to consumers.

Within their multiple brands, such as Old Navy and Banana Republic, Gap Inc. can appeal to consumers at any stage of their life. (Swanson.) Competitors Competitor #1: Express  Company Background  Express was developed over thirty years ago from an opportunity that presented itself to the founders of the brand. (“Men’s Clothing.” Express.)  Women’s merchandise includes dresses, jumpsuits, skirts, jeans, dress pants, tops and tees, sweaters and sweatshirts, suiting, swimwear and accessories. (“Women’s Clothing.”)  Marketing Position  Sexy, Sophisticated, Fashion-Forward Competitor #2: J. Crew  Company Background  J. Crew initially debuted as a catalog in 1983. A store in New York was opened six years after the catalog launch, and the brand continues to grow today with their stores, catalog sales and e- commerce sales. The brand prides themselves on producing high- quality clothing. (“About J. Crew.”)  Product Categories  J. Crew carries merchandise for men, women, children, and babies.  Men’s merchandise includes casual shirts, dress shirts, sweaters, tees and polos, sweatshirts, denim, pants, shorts, outerwear and jackets, swimwear, suiting, ties, shoes, undergarments and other accessories. • 8. sweaters and sweatshirts, shorts, pants, suiting, outerwear and jackets, ties, sleepwear, shoes and other accessories. (“Boys.”)  Babies merchandise is the same for little boys and little girls, with the exception of dresses and skirts for the girls. Merchandise includes one pieces, coveralls, shirts and tops, sweaters and fleece, pants and leggings, outerwear, swimwear, shoes and other accessories. (“Baby.”)  Marketing Position  Classic, Preppy, Trendy, Sophisticated, Chic Differentiation The major difference between Gap Inc. and Express would be the fact that Express does not have any merchandise that is for children. Another difference is that Gap Inc.’s merchandise is geared more towards a casual lifestyle, while Express does offer a lot of merchandise that is for young professionals. With J. Crew, there are not that many differences with Gap Inc. Both brands market towards the whole family, provides a sophisticated and casual style of merchandise and price points are close. One difference between Gap Inc. and J. Crew could be their target markets; it seems as though J. Crew’s target market could be for an older generation, such as ages 35 to 45 years old. Philosophy Gap Inc.’s philosophy is for consumers to wear clothes they are passionate about and express their personal style. I can relate to this as an employee because my fashion and personal style is always evolving. As I’m getting older, I’m discovering more and more each day what I’m comfortable in. pg. 7
  • 9. Trending Report Our target market consists of consumers, female and male, with ages ranging from 18 to 28 years old. Consumers in this age range are either currently enrolled in college or recent graduates with their Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degrees. The average annual income of these individuals is around $46,900 to $59,600. (“Income of Young Adults.”) Denim trends that are currently sought after by our target market include skinny/slim fit, flared bottoms, boyfriend fit for women, overalls, gray denim, ripped/distressed denim and white denim. Skinny and slim fit denim has been a trend for many recent years, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere. They are popular with both male and female consumers, and can be worn casual or dressed up. The 70’s have influence in denim trends with the flared bottoms look. The gray denim can be considered more casual than a black jean, and comes in vary many shades of gray. Boyfriend fit can be worn relaxed or dressed up. They are perfect for pairing with a blazer and heels for a more sophisticated look, or with a tee and tennis shoes for a relaxed look. Ripped and distressed denim can be worn and styled different ways, with distressing being strategically placed. White denim is clean, and can be worn many different ways. They can be worn with distressing, boyfriend fit, slim/skinny fit or flared. (Wasilak.) T-shirt trends for the target market include rock band shirts, graphic tees, basic tees, and oversized boyfriend fit tees for women. The rock band shirts and graphic tees can be edgy and fun. These pieces can be worn casually with some denim, or women can wear them with a skirt or denim. The tees can also be styled with a jacket or cardigan. Basic tees are simple, yet chic, tops for our target market and can serve as a go to for any occasion. They can be dressed up with a scarf or other accessory, or worn casually. The same goes for the oversized boyfriend tees for women; they can be worn casually with a denim vest and leggings, or with skinny jeans, heel and bold accessories for a night out. pg. 8

  • 20. Technical Package Development Details View and Points of Measure T-Shirt • Front and Back: Men’s (“Flat Spec.”) V-Neck t-shirts are a popular fit among men and women; therefore we will incorporate them into our collection. These shirts will come in a wide array of colors, including neutrals and hues to match the season. T-shirts will be made with two different fits-the classic fit and slim fit. Some consumers may not want to wear their tops fitting closely to their body, so we will incorporate both fits into the collection. • Front and Back: Women’s (“Fashion Flats.”) pg. 19
  • 21. Jeans Sketches • Front and Back: Men’s (“Vector-Ladies Denim Jeans (Boyfriend Cut).”) • Front and Back: Ladies (“Drawing of Lady Skinny Denim Jeans with Crinkle Effect.”) Women’s jeans will come with different waistlines and lengths, such as low rise, mid-rise and high rise. These women consumers come in all shapes and sizes, and we would like to create jeans to fit their personal preferences. Low rise jeans are worn at the hips below the natural waist. Mid-rise jeans range from 9 to 11 inches and are worn at the natural waist. High rise jeans are longer than 10 inches and are worn above the natural waist. (McGoff.) pg. 20
  • 22. Fit is a very important factor when it comes to manufacturing jeans. This can affect how people’s height is perceived. Also, there are many types of shapes and sizes when it comes to the body, therefore different fits, rises and styles are needed in order to attract the most consumers. pg. 21

  • 26. Technical Package Development and Fabric Development of Print or Yarn Dye T-Shirts Many of the shirts that will be produced will be similar in styles and consist of classic fits. The women’s line of t-shirts will consist of some more range when it comes to the styling of the tops. Cotton will be the textile for the majority of the t-shirts, and some of the textiles may be blended with polyester. These two fibers are two of the most widely used in production of shirts, and will be strong, easy to dye, easy to care for, and be able to last a long time. The tops will be woven with the most common type of construction-the plain weave. This type of weave is durable and inexpensive to produce. (Garg.) The shirts will be constructed with a front piece, back piece and the two sleeves. From there, they will be stitched together. • Print Fabric Swatches Prints that will be incorporated into the t-shirt collection include polka dots, stripes, and floral print. • 30. Closing Statement All of the aspects learned in this course can assist with developing clothing lines and deciding what types of styles to be sold in stores. This course has also helped to ensure that details are paid attention to. The goal for any clothing collection is to be successful, and in order to be successful, the merchandiser needs to provider clothing that will be appealing to consumers. pg. 29
