What is Group Discussion ?
• It is a process of examining or
considering something in detail in a
group.”
• It is a process of incorporating
(include, encompass, involve) views
of different team members to reach a
common goal.”
What is Group Discussion ?
• Members of GD about 8-12
• It is used as reliable, testing device
- mainly as a tool to assess all the
candidates in a group at one go -in
order to select the best in
comparativeperspective.
Key Points
• Seating arrangements:
Circular or semi circular
• Addressing the members in the
beginning: Dear Friends. Later:
He or She.
• Selecting a leader: Not supposed to
select a leader. A leader emerges
automatically.
Key Points
• Papers allowed for writing: Depends on the
organizer.
• When the topic is not clear: Do not ask the panel members.
Wait for someone else to begin and learn.
• Being the starter of a discussion: Only if you know the
topic well.
• Use of examples: always attracts
• Making a summary at the end: Good thing to do as it proves
your leadership qualities.
1
The reason why
institutes put you
through a Group
discussion and an
interview, after testing
your technical and
conceptual skills in an
exam, is to get to know
you as a person and
gauge how well you
will fit in theirinstitute.
2
The Group
discussion tests
how you function
asa part of ateam.
Why is GD important?
3
As a manager, you
will always be
working in teams,
as a member or as a
leader. Therefore
how you interact in
a team becomes an
important criterion
for your selection.
4
In interviews day
by day eliminating
of candidates
through group
discussionis
increasing.
5
Group Discussion
improves your
ability to think
critically.

GDs can be topic-based and case-based
Types of GD
Case Based
The case study
tries to simulate
a real-life
situation.
Information
about the
situation will be
given to you and
you would be
asked as a group
to resolve the
situation.
The group
members are
given a topic to
discuss. A topic
is typically in
the form of a
statement
(some times,
the statement
may not be
complete.
Example
"The biggest
problem faced
by our country
is.........").

Types of GD
Factualtopics
are about
practical things,
which an
ordinary person
is aware of in
hisday- to-day
life.
Typicallytheseare
about socio-
economic topics.
These can be
current, i.e.they
may have beenin
the news lately,or
could beunbound
by time.
A factual topic for
discussion gives a
candidate a
chance to prove
that he is aware
of and sensitive
to his
environment.

Examples:-
Controversial
topics are the
ones that are
argumentative in
nature.They are
meant to generate
controversy.
In GDswhere these
topics are givenfor
discussion, the
noise level is
usually high,there
may betempers
flying.
The idea behind giving
a topic like this is to
see how much
maturity the candidate
is displayingby
keeping his temper in
check,by rationally
and logically arguing
hispoint of view
without getting
personal and
emotional.

These topics are
