The National Fire Protection Association states that in 2014, there were 1,298,000 fires reported in the United States. With such staggering numbers it is no mystery why this has been a "Hot" topic for Prism Analytical Technologies to research and address. Though we have little to offer in the way of fire prevention, we can help to reduce the number of illnesses or symptoms experienced following the fire and smoke clean up. Alice Delia, Ph.D., Laboratory Director, has worked diligently to prepare multiple papers, presentations, and reporting options to help you cater to your clients' requests. Most recently, Alice had the privilege of participating in a Wildfire focused round table discussion during American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo (AIHce 2016).

Baseball and softball umpires are affected by heat-related illness like other professionals who work in the outdoor environment. Many officials are volunteers while other receives compensation for their efforts. Regardless of the level of officiating from Little League to the Major Leagues, most are affected by heat-related illness in the summertime. Although heat-related illness is discussed in general by some colleges and high schools in their programs, the umpiring associations engaging these officials has failed to recognize the hazard and risks. In order to provide awareness of heat-related illness and how it affects an umpire’s performance on the field, a presentation was created to train officials to understand what happens when they fail to hydrate, rest, and take the necessary precautions that can affect their health. Heat exhaustion is the primary cause for umpires to make poor judgments for calling balls and strikes as well as making critical decisions on rotating into position to make calls on plays. Many lower level officials will take assignments for doubleheaders or multiple game assignments in the summer without regard for their ability to meet expectations. By creating awareness, we hope to improve the lives of baseball and softball officials and improve their performance on the field by understanding the effects of heat-related illness.

All across the globe workers collect spent lead-acid batteries, break them down, smelt the lead, and resell the ingots to other manufacturing and production facilities. In the developing world, workers and their families perform the work. Their exposure to lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals can be very high. If children are involved in the process, blood leads can reach dangerous levels. There are many companies in the US, Canada, and Mexico doing the same work. The occupational health exposures are more controlled but the risk is relative high. Only a few companies have implemented the necessary hierarchy of controls to control worker exposure. Finally, the process is also a public health and an environmental health issue for workers in developing countries and company not using air emission controls to reduce the spread of lead in the air.

Workers across the globe recycle electronic waste. In developing countries the work is performed by workers and their families. Sometimes they live in the e-waste piles to make a living wage. Many of these workers and families are exposed to high lead and cadmium levels In other more developed countries, recycling of e-waste is a billion dollar industry using more sophisticated controls but workers are still exposed to these heavy metal contaminants. Laws across the globe are very different if they exist at all. If these laws exist, they are not enforced due to lack of human talent and resources. Workers continue to be exposed to support and create a life for their family.

Technology can be combined with the more traditional employer occupational safety and health protection activities. These newer employment-based programs to promote better health through helping workers quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or exercise more regularly. In support of these efforts, some employers have made changes in their policies and facilities to support physical activity and healthier eating, and some employers connect with community resources for health education, health fairs, and other services. Using both technology and performance metrics can provide useful data regarding the workforce and psychosocial stress and the risk of an uneventful outcome.

Safety communication comes in varying forms including policies and procedures, performance statistics, hazard and incident reports, workplace inductions, risk assessments, and training. Effective communication mechanisms are critical to engage staff in safety activities, to gain cooperation and support, and to maintain a positive safety culture. These mechanisms need to complement the practical and technical safety strategies. Clear and constructive safety communication can improve knowledge and understanding that prevents at-risk behaviours and enhances safe work practices. A case study is used to illustrate how an organisation responded to a decrease in injury performance with a variety of safety communication techniques.

Significant changes have occurred in the ISO 14001 standard. Those suggested changes are now mandatory to improve both transparency and commitment to the continuous improvement of environmental management systems. The information is presented by AECOM and EtQ.

Scientific evidence now supports what many EHS professionals have long suspected—that risk factors in the workplace can contribute to health problems previously considered unrelated to work. As a result, there is clear value in shifting from a siloed view of employee work safety toward a more inclusive and comprehensive perspective.

Crane accidents occur with regularity because of various factors, including but not limited to, inexperience with type and size of the crane, lifting the load, environmental conditions, maintenance and repair, inadequate training and education, and poor operator skills. Rigging is equally important as the crane selection. Riggers need to understand the load rating and type of slings need to lift the load properly. This course will help construction workers understand many of these issues. The course is part of a larger segment on crane safety.
