Hello, I’m David Sorensen Senior Consultant and Trainer at AuraPortal
I would like to start by asking you a question
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? And in 10?
Ok…we haven’t come here to discuss
our private lives, but we have come to talk about the world of business, so I’ll rephrase the
question:
Where do you see your company in 5 years? And in 10?
Although these are good questions, they don’t interest me, and I don’t think they should interest you either.
Instead of the future... shouldn’t we be interested in today?
in what we can do with current technology, when you leave this room? Because nobody knows exactly how the world of business will be one year from now.
At a time when companies in many industries offer “similar products” and use “comparable”
technology, high performance Business Processes are the key point of differentiation.
To achieve this successful differentiation and compete triumphantly in the current world of
business it is essential to create a fusion between Creativity and Business Processes
The results enjoyed by our customers have in fact proven that “a tough competitive
environment” is by far the strongest reason why our customers adopt our creative solutions
which make it possible to fuse...

As my mom used to tell me… “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.”
— I must confess I also heard this the other day from the wise old turtle in Kung Fu Panda. So maybe the author wasn't my mom after all… maybe, someone here can tell me later?
So, we’re going to talk about the present, about how AuraPortal’s Customers are improving
their processes to be more productive, efficient and better than their competitors.
We’ve already heard about drones being used to send things. But this company needed to pick up blood samples and information from Doctors and send them to their Labs.
At first the doctors had to travel from their location back to the labs in order to deliver the results and the required treatments to their patients.
Doctors also had to fill in several forms in places with no internet, so basically it would take days or even weeks for all the information to arrive at the Lab. Besides, traveling back and forth from these remote locations was very inefficient.
Now, thanks to these machines, IOT and the AuraPortal Processes they are able to dramatically reduce their costs and have also improved their efficiency in their pursuit to help their patients.
We are not only talking about improving the way people work, we are talking about changing people’s lives, changing our society and the way we live.
The system evaluates and classifies the data

There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction.
This quote relates to our next example where an important International Bank had to change its mentality to improve its efficiency.
On this slide you can see a Bank machine that detects counterfeit bills. The problem in following example was that when some of the bank’s major customers deposited a large amount of cash to pay in, the money was usually counted at the end of the working day in order to serve more customers who were waiting in line. When the cashiers had time to count the bills, the machine often informed them of a counterfeit bill. Before this event, a "manual" protocol was in place which involved the bank teller sending an email to the bank's insurance company to cover the value of the counterfeit bills. In addition, the cashier had to notify the client of the detection of counterfeit money as well as his supervisor, who in turn had to notify head office and the Ministry of Economy. All this was very time consuming for many of the bank’s employees and led to loss of information, inefficiency, etc.
The solution we provided was for the machine to report directly to AuraPortal iBPMS which automated the entire process. In the diagram we will see how the process is working today.

Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning. — This is a quote attributed to Bill Gates — which brings us to our next example.
The human brain is such a complex system that it currently exceeds all skills that can be put into a machine. Perhaps not by much as the computing power of a machine is far superior to that of a person, however when it comes to adapting to new tasks or situations, neuronal activity beats any supercomputer hands down. It is precisely this human quality of finding the most appropriate solution to a problem, even if they have never encountered it before, that scientists want to implement in machines.
So, with the lack of human capacity to perform complex calculations based on past experiences to make the best decisions from all possible options I am going to show you how we solved one of our customer’s problems using prescriptive analytics and AuraPortal Business Rules.
Prescriptive Analytics is responsible for automating decision making, either by using Business Rules Management Systems, when the decision process is systematic, or Mathematical Optimization algorithms, when the process is not systematic. It provides considerable help in the decision making process, improving the operational efficiency of the companies that use it, and differentiating them from their competitors in the current changing and competitive market.
One of our customers in the banking industry had a high percentage of long-term customer loss because other banks were apparently offering much more competitive benefits than they were. Thus, realizing their inability to solve their customer churn problem they contacted us to see if we could offer a solution.
The main objective was to considerably reduce customer loss therefore; the quickest solution was to equip the department responsible for account closures with appropriate psychological tactics to use to try to retain the customer. Thus we generated an algorithm to collect information such as customer age, their likes, the services they use and so on. This information enabled AuraPortal to determine how successful each psychological tactic would be, and reveal the most successful tactic for customer retention in each individual case based on the type of customer wishing to close an account. The graph shows 5 types of tactics and in this particular case the type with the highest probability of success is the tactic which involves highlighting competitor deficiencies.

The next example is about IoT /machines. It involves one of our customers, which is a leading British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer.
Our customer’s problem was an inefficient employee management process. In the UK there is a very strict regulation of temporary work which means that large grocery retailers must have the latest technology to comply with the regulations.
In the past the company used rudimentary methods which didn’t give them enough control over the hours worked by each employee. Furthermore, the company was aware of phishing between employees in different stores. In addition, wages were paid by a temporary recruitment agency which involved sending information of the hours worked by hundreds of employees to the temp agency for them to register in their AuraPortal in order to pay the worker’s wages.
To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of this process we decided to install a facial recognition machine in all the superstores to solve all the problems: on the one hand the facial recognition machine automatically sent all the information regarding hours worked by each employee directly to the temp agency and on the other hand it made phishing impossible.

We have all seen those lines on the airport floors or underground metro that help passengers get to their destinations, for example:
Follow the green light to go to terminals A, B and C
Follow the red line to go to the exit
Follow the yellow brick road to the World of Oz… Well you get the point!
Our next customer, due to the high volume of foot traffic in its building, needed a more intelligent control system since they had to dynamically classify the visitors, not only by where they came from and where they were going but also by many other concepts, for example if a certain area would get too hot because of high foot traffic, visitor illnesses, fire, etc. these routes had to be modified.
So they contacted us to see what we could propose.

I strongly believe in creativity, for me creativity is looking where everyone else is looking and seeing something that no-one else is capable of seeing. I also believe that creativity is knowledge, it’s important to know a lot about a specific topic in order to propose something new. We must have knowledge before we can create.
You must have deep knowledge of a topic in order to innovate, because if you don’t know where you are coming from you will never create where you are going.
