We All Know the Benefits
of Standards:
Let’s Apply That
Knowledge to Publishing
Standards

About
We don’t think twice about the
value of standards in creating
efficiencies in manufacturing
3
4
You wouldn’t want to build one of
these machines every time!
And there are standards
aplenty in the publishing world
going way, way, way back

Can we create standards
that are native to our current
digital environment?
7
Publishing isn’t what it used to be
Skeuomorph
9
What are elements of
a digital native document?
10
Realistically we need more than this
11
Truly digital native documents
require a lot more…
12
Good quality metadata
Interoperable
Standard formats
Accessible design
Multimedia (if appropriate)
Transformable
Adaptive design
Atomize-able
Preserve-able
Linkable & Trackable
13
How does this all apply
to standards?
14
Users need content where they are,
when they require it

Reflecting back on SES Conference in 2010
17
Have we made
progress since 2010?
Yes…
18
What can we do with that?
19
What else can we do with that?
20
What else can we do with that?
21
How can others
make this happen?
22
How many organizations
use this workflow?
23
Why is this change in workflow
better AND cheaper?
24

Rather than building your own
How much would it take to
develop your own DTD from
scratch?

NISO STS
A Quick History on ISO STS
• ISO Goals:
– Improve ISO publication process
– Output in many formats: PDF, HTML or EPUB
– Create change documents (redlines)
– See: Rosenblum, B. Standards Engineering,
Vol. 65, No. 6, November/December 2013
• Worked with consultant
– Reviewed existing XML standards for
documents, such as DITA, DocBook, JATS, TEI
ISO Standards Tag Set (ISO STS)
Originally developed by ISO in 2011
Based on NISO Z39.96 – JATS
“Wherever possible closely aligned
with JATS with minimal changes to
tags or definitions”
32
ISO STS in Public
• Nicholas Fleury introduced ISO STS at 39th SPAB
• ISO posted to public Website
– http://www.iso.org/schema/isosts/
– DTD, Documentation, other resources
– Available for other standards developers
Origins of NISO STS in 2015
• ISO recognized the need to maintain alignment
between JATS & STS
• Adapt and expand STS to meet the needs of
broader set of SDOs, especially WRT metadata
• Expand participation by a variety of SDOs
• Move maintenance of STS to a neutral 3rd party
organization
Why use JATS Foundation for STS?
• Standards & journal articles share structures
– Sections
– Tables
– Figures
– Equations
– Bibliography
• Well-developed and well-tested model
• Easily modifiable for standards use
• Strong third party support

STS Benefits: New Products
• Easier production of HTML, ePub, Mobile
• Develop new products
– e.g. ISO Online Browsing Platform
• Aids when multiple standards are used across an
enterprise or for a single project;
• Co-publish standards
• Interchange with distributor partners
• Inter-standard linking
– Click-through linking
– Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)
STS Benefits: Adoption
• Consistent metadata delivery to distribution
partners
• Site-crawling indexers benefit from
consistencies
• Encourage adoption with industry users that
are publishing internal standards
Lower costs and more efficient production

  • 31. A Quick History on ISO STS • ISO Goals: – Improve ISO publication process – Output in many formats: PDF, HTML or EPUB – Create change documents (redlines) – See: Rosenblum, B. Standards Engineering, Vol. 65, No. 6, November/December 2013 • Worked with consultant – Reviewed existing XML standards for documents, such as DITA, DocBook, JATS, TEI
  • 32. ISO Standards Tag Set (ISO STS) Originally developed by ISO in 2011 Based on NISO Z39.96 – JATS “Wherever possible closely aligned with JATS with minimal changes to tags or definitions” 32
  • 33. ISO STS in Public • Nicholas Fleury introduced ISO STS at 39th SPAB • ISO posted to public Website – http://www.iso.org/schema/isosts/ – DTD, Documentation, other resources – Available for other standards developers
  • 34. Origins of NISO STS in 2015 • ISO recognized the need to maintain alignment between JATS & STS • Adapt and expand STS to meet the needs of broader set of SDOs, especially WRT metadata • Expand participation by a variety of SDOs • Move maintenance of STS to a neutral 3rd party organization
  • 35. Why use JATS Foundation for STS? • Standards & journal articles share structures – Sections – Tables – Figures – Equations – Bibliography • Well-developed and well-tested model • Easily modifiable for standards use • Strong third party support

STS Benefits: New Products • Easier production of HTML, ePub, Mobile • Develop new products – e.g. ISO Online Browsing Platform • Aids when multiple standards are used across an enterprise or for a single project; • Co-publish standards • Interchange with distributor partners • Inter-standard linking – Click-through linking – Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)
  • 42. STS Benefits: Adoption • Consistent metadata delivery to distribution partners • Site-crawling indexers benefit from consistencies • Encourage adoption with industry users that are publishing internal standards Lower costs and more efficient production

Editor's Notes

  1. How many of you are familiar with NISO? Wait, how many are not. Let’s talk….
  2. Majuscule letters versus miniuscule characters Franklin wrote his alphabetic proposal in 1768, while living in London. “Franklin Fonetic” consisted of 26 letters, but the conventional letterforms c, j, q, w, x, and y were all thrown out, to be replaced with new letterforms. Briefly, these new letters represented the following sounds: 1. law, caught 2. run, enough 3. this, breathe 4. singer, ring 5. she, sure, emotion, leash 6. thing, breath The remaining letters of the traditional Latin alphabet were retained, but their sound value was narrowed to just one sound, or phoneme, so that, for example “the g has no longer two different Sounds, which occasion’d Confusion, but is as every Letter ought to be, confin’d to one.”
  3. The term skeuomorph is compounded from Greek skéuos (σκεῦος), meaning 'container or tool', and morphḗ (μορφή), meaning 'shape'. It has been applied to material objects since 1890[6] and is now also used to describe computer and mobile interfaces.[7] A similar alternative definition of skeuomorph is "a physical ornament or design on an object made to resemble another material or technique". This definition is broader in scope, as it can be applied to design elements that still serve the same function as they did in a previous design. Skeuomorphs may be deliberately employed to make a new look more familiar and comfortable, or may be the result of cultural influences and norms on the designer. They may be artistic expression on the part of the designer.[7] The academic Donald Norman describes skeuomorphism in terms of cultural constraints: interactions with a system that are learned only through culture.
  4. If you’ve just climbed 1,500 feet to the top of a radio tower, you don’t want to climb back down to check the manual. Or scroll through the PDF to find what you need.
  5. Launched in 2012
  6. You can look inside parts of a document

  8. And then, oh, wait, you can’t quite do that… HERE’s A BUSINESS Opportunity
  9. Plus 3 years of staff time, and hundreds of hours of time.
  10. This situation led to one of my favorite quotes regarding standards, from former UN Ambassador from the US, Connie Morrella. She said that standards are like tooth burshes. We all want one, but we don’t want to use someone else’s. And this makes sense doesn’t it? We wouldn’t want to use that standard over there, because that community is, well different than ours, what would they know about the problems we face?
