WMA FORTBILDUNGSTAGUNG 2018
VON DER PERSON ZUR
PERSONALISIERTEN MEDIZIN -
VOM LABOR ZUM PATIENTEN
FREITAG, 30. NOVEMBER 2018
WIEN • VAN SWIETEN SAAL
VORWORT Wolfgang Grisold
neuen Entwicklungen stehen, damit erreichen.
Die Einführungsvorträge werden von Professor Markus Hengstschläger und Werner Pokstefl (Patient/
innenvertreter gehalten.

Nutrition Summer School
The ESPGHAN Nutrition Summer School is designed to offer a comprehensive curriculum on paediatric
nutritional research, focusing on current ‘hot topics’, serve as an introduction to evidence‑based medicine in
the field of nutrition, to provide evidence-based advice on nutrition for healthy infants and children and on the
prevention, diagnosis, and management of paediatric nutritional diseases.
The Summer School included a mixture of plenary sessions and workshops in small groups in which the
participants have practiced and developed their knowledge in nutritional sciences as well as their evidence‑
based medicine knowledge and skills.
Students further presented their research (or a difficult clinical case) to fellow students and faculty in small
groups in order to receive constructive feedback on the content and delivery of their presentation.
The faculty of the Nutrition Summer School meeting consisted of Allied Health Professionals and Medical
Doctors that are specialised in the field of gastroenterology, herpetology and nutrition from various medical
centres all over Europe.
Evaluation
Country- and Gender Balance: 37 delegates from 16 countries attended the ESPGHAN nutrition summer
school with the majority of participants coming from Italy. 80% of the delegates were female.
Scientific Programme: speakers, selection of topics and presentations were rated as excellent and good by
the delegates. No suggestions were made concerning the improvement of time management (Graph 1).
67 percent rated the quality and application of the knowledge to their day to day work as excellent whereas
33 percent believe it is good (Graph 2).

Introduction
It is our highest priority to continuously improve the scientific content and collate feedback on the organisation
of the ESPGHAN – EPP Courses in order to maintain the best learning environment.
The structure of the scientific program and the topics presented during the schools are suggested and chosen
by the local organisers while most of the logistical and administrative organisation is carried out by the
ESPGHAN Office.
To guarantee and improve the quality of our educational events, evaluations are being conducted at the end
of each course. These evaluations are carried out either in the last coffee break or scientific sessions, giving
participants approximately 20 minutes to fill in the evaluation form and address open topics or give their
feedback to faculty, before the closing remarks and end of the events.
The evaluation consists of 16 questions, 12 of which address the scientific content whereas 4 relate to the
organisation of the event. The participants are given the option to vote on a scale between 5 (Excellent),
4 (Good), 3 (Average), 2 (Poor) and 1 (Unsatisfactory).
Further, all delegates are asked to evaluate each individual talk. The outcome of this scoring is later shared
with the individual speakers as well as the ESPGHAN Education Secretary and the organiser of the course. This
guarantees that the quality of speakers remains high in future courses.
We hope to see many of the young participants joining and actively participating in ESPGHAN in the near future.
In the following we would like to provide you with a summary of the evaluation of each EPP sponsored course
held in 2017. If you wish to obtain a full detailed report for any of the events, please contact the ESPGHAN Office.

Danube Summer School
ESPGHAN organised a Danube/Balkan Summer School as a regional
International Summer School in association with Romanian Society for
Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition in Murighiol, Romania.
There were 40 participants from Danube/Balkan region (Bulgaria,
Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, and Slovenia) as well as
form Albania and UK attending the school. Most of the participants
were trainees in paediatrics with special interest in paediatric
gastroenterology with good knowledge and skills in paediatric
gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, among them four
ESPGHAN Trainee members and very likely future leaders of
paediatric gastroenterology services in their institutions.
Case presentations were presented by participants of the course,
where the degree of knowledge, skills and availability of diagnostic
and therapeutic tools was seen.
The lectures were presented by ESPGHAN members Iva Hojsak, Florence
Lacaille, Nicolette Moes, Raanan Shamir, Nikhil Thapar, Gabor Veres, and
Jernej Dolinšek as well as by our host Tudor Pop.
Final evaluation of the course by the participants was more than positive.
All the members of the faculty received excellent grades, and also school
as a whole was considered to be excellent by all the participants.

Paediatric GI Motility Hands‑On Training Course
Despite the fact that GI motility disorders collectively are common, skills and
knowledge in the investigation of paediatric gastrointestinal motility disorders
remains limited. Not surprisingly there has been little improvement in the
understanding,diagnosisandmanagementofmanysuchdisorders.More
recently many practitioners across Europe have acquired equipment
for some GI motility procedures. There is, however considerable
variability in practice and clinical utility of the tests, which may have
implications for patient care. The proposed hands‑on GI Motility
Disorders course aims to provide exposure and expert guidance in
GI motility disorders from a team of highly experienced and world
renowned GI motility specialists.
The highly structured course set within one of Europe’s foremost
clinical paediatric GI Motility centres aimed to provide this training by
introducing delegates to the breadth of common and more specialised
tests available. The course delivered teaching both by lectures to provide
participants with a state of the art update on techniques as well as ‘hands
on’ exposure.
Furthermore it teaches delegates the protocols for, as well as analysis and interpretation of, procedures based
on actual patient‑based cases and data, the faculty structured the course to cover motility testing in sequence
from the pharynx through to the upper and then lower GI tract and they provided participants with access to
course materials to enable application to clinical practice and ongoing education.
Evaluation
Country‑ and Gender Balance: the course was attended by 49 delegates
from 26 countries with the majority of delegates coming from the UK,
followed by delegates from Italy. 63 percent of the delegates were
female while 37 percent were male.
Scientific Programme:
At the beginning of the day there was an opportunity to discuss what the delegates wanted to achieve from
the training and the facilitator referred to this during the day, adjusting his approach as needed to incorporate
their requirements. The sessions were varied covering the stages of the mentoring cycle, differences between
mentoring and coaching as well as the values and principles undermining mentoring. The presentations
were insightful and thought provoking and there were good discussions between the delegates regarding
differing approaches to mentorship and the sharing of personal experiences. The facilitator, who had good
understanding of mentoring in the healthcare setting, was excellent with good delivery of the information in
a very professional manner.
Akeysuccessofthedaywasthatallattendeesfeltasthoughtheygainedfreshinsightandlearnedofalternative
approaches which given the wealth of experience of those attending was a significant achievement.

Young Investigator Forum
The ESPGHAN young investigators forum (YIF) has been an integral part of the society for the last 20 years.
The meeting was established to nurture academic development in the society and foster collaborations
amongst the emerging generations of academics and clinicians. An intensive 3 day meeting run once a year
that includes ice‑breaking sessions; delegate presentations and detailed feedback on generic (abstract,
presentation etc) and project specific items; faculty presentations (abstract writing, presentation and feedback
skills, manuscript preparation, preparation for an academic career) and an interactive social programme.
The forum is residential and restricted to 20 delegates chosen following a competitive application and
selection process.
The aim of the ESPGHAN young investigators forum is to provide a learning atmosphere, which is friendly and
constructive. Furthermore, young investigators should have the chance to network with other delegates and
senior faculty members in order to set up research collaborations in Europe.
Evaluation
Country- and Gender Balance: the forum was attended by 20 delegates from 14 countries with the majority
of delegates coming from the Netherlands, followed by delegates from the UK. 89 percent of the delegates
were female while 11 percent were male. The average age of the delegates in 2017 was 28.11.
Scientific Programme: speakers, selection of topics and presentations were rated as excellent and good by
the delegates.
The time management during the scientific sessions was primarily rated as excellent and good (Graph 7).
One delegate suggested extending the discussion time as they felt there was not enough time given to
questions and discussion. The next organiser of the Young Investigator Forum will take this into consideration
when drafting the program. 50 percent rated the quality of the knowledge and application of the knowledge
to their day to day work as Excellent with the other 44 percent as good (Graph 8).

CHILDREN REPRESENT
20% OF THE EUROPEAN POPULATION
AND 100% OF EUROPE’S FUTURE!
Promoting good health is an integral part of the EU’s
economic-growth strategy, as keeping people healthy and
active for longer enhances productivity and competitiveness.
Children represent around one fifth of the European
population, approximately 100 million people. Supporting
and promoting child health and development is key for the
present, and the future, of our societies. Guaranteeing their
healthy and optimal development ought to be a priority.
Childhood is a critical period as unique environmental
interactions occur during early development, some of which
have profound effects on future health. Common adult
chronicdisordershavemodifiableprecursorsthatariseduring
childhood, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, food intolerances and
allergies, liver failure, and many others.
Prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal, liver and
nutrition determined conditions during this critical period
of life is of key importance for lifelong health, well-being,
performance and the ability to contribute to society.
This international research collaboration will require network and
infrastructure support, as provided by scientific societies such as ESPGHAN
(the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology und
Nutrition).
Investing in child health leads to improved lifelong health
and economic growth

OVERVIEW ON RULES FOR ESPGHAN GUIDELINES AND POSITION PAPERS
Introduction
ESPGHAN strongly supports the development of guidelines and position papers and aims to achieve the
highest possible scientific quality and value for clinical practice, education and research. In this overview we
define the standards and procedures for endorsement by the society.
The general concepts on ESPGHAN guidelines and position papers are provided in the ESPGHAN rules and
regulations:
“Committees and Working Groups may take the initiative of producing scientific documents in the name of
ESPGHAN (consensus statements, comments, medical position papers, guidelines). These documents are
publications that present and make public the official opinion and recommendations of ESPGHAN about certain
childhood health issues. In accordance with the current Code of Conduct, position papers of the society should
focus on scientific, clinical or public health issues but should not aim to focus on or endorse commercial products
or services.
The Council (and also the Committees’ Chairs in the case of Working Groups) should be informed of such
initiatives and their scope before any action taken; in particular information is desirable concerning topic and
reasons for the choice and timeline. In case Committees and Working Groups consider the matter confidential it
is possible to inform only the President and the General Secretary.
The Chair of the Committee involved should examine the declaration of COI of the last 12 months of participants
and exclude members with a conflict of interest that compromises the credibility of the document.
All committee manuscripts should be sent to JPGN. When other organizations are involved, publication in JPGN
should be suggested, or a joint publication with another journal that represents the other organizations. When
the journal is not JPGN, approval should be given by Council before submission of the manuscript to this journal.
If approval is not granted, the Committee/Working Group may submit the paper, but not as an ESPGHAN paper. “
Definitions
An ESPGHAN Guideline is a comprehensive document that addresses specific research or clinical questions
and abides by evidence based rules for guideline development.
An ESPGHAN Position Paper (or consensus paper) addresses a topic for which guidance is necessary but there
is only limited scientific evidence at present, and therefore the recommendations are mostly based on expert
opinion.
ESPGHAN Guidelines and Position Papers are published on behalf of the society, generally in the JPGN, are
listed on the ESPGHAN website, and should include the ESPGHAN name in the title. They represent the official
position of ESPGHAN and are published after a detailed review and approval by ESPGHAN council.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and Working Groups (WGs) may also develop manuscripts that report on their
work/research, reviews of current information, or opinions. Such manuscripts are not considered “Guidelines”
or “Position Papers” and may be published under the responsibility of the authors, generally in the JPGN, but
will not be posted on the ESPGHAN website. The ESPGHAN name must not appear in the title and a disclaimer
should be added to the publication stating that “Although this paper is produced by the ESPGHAN SIG/WG
XXX it does not necessarily represent ESPGHAN policy and is not endorsed by ESPGHAN”.

Proposals for a guideline or position paper
Committees intending to produce a guideline or position paper should submit a proposal (see submission
forms) via the ESPGHAN Office to the ESPGHAN Secretary, who will coordinate a review of the proposal by
Council. Proposals from SIG’s or WG’s should also be commented on by the respective Committee Chair who
may involve the Committee.
The proposal should define the topic, the key questions addressed, the professionals involved, the literature
search strategy, the method of consensus development, the proposed group(s) to be involved in the consensus
process, the proposed place of publication (preferably JPGN), any financial requirements, and should include
declarations of potential conflicts of interests. Submission documents should be submitted to the ESPGHAN
office. The Council’s response will usually be within 3 weeks. This may include recommendations on refinement
of the research questions or the involvement of other groups. However, if significant issues arise the review
might take more time.
Council approval of the proposal is mandatory if the name of ESPGHAN is to appear on the publication.
Topic addressed
ESPGHAN guidelines or position papers should address pertinent topics of high relevance for clinical practice,
policy or research and should aim to arrive at conclusions that are helpful for practice. They should not focus
on or promote commercial products or services, and should usually avoid citing commercial brand names.
A mere repetition of previously published information will usually not justify the publication of an ESPGHAN
position paper or guideline.
Selection of involved professionals
The selection of involved professionals should be based on their qualification in the field to be addressed.
A mixed composition with respect to area of expertise, gender, and geographic location is recommended
where appropriate.
Systematic literature search
For ESPGHAN guidelines a systematic literature search in at least three databases is mandatory. ESPGHAN may
agree to appropriate requests for funding external outsourcing of the literature search and data extraction in
evidence tables.
For position papers a systematic review of the literature published during the five preceding years in at least
one database (e.g. PubMed), but preferably with more than one database, based on a predefined search
strategy with key words is recommended. Key papers published prior to those five years which are cited in
manuscripts retrieved or known to the experts involved should also be considered. At least two members of
the lead authors should review all manuscripts considered.
GRADE classification
Guidelines must use the GRADE system to classify the level of evidence and the strength of recommendations
for statements and conclusions(1)
.
