World Water Day 2022

Our planet is 75% covered by water, but 97.5% of that water is saltwater. We only have 2.5% of freshwater to drink. Yet, on a daily basis, we use 10 billion tons of freshwater worldwide.

Water is without a doubt the most important resource we have. Our bodies consist of at least 60% of water. Humans also consume about two liters of water each day, through drinking and eating. We need water to grow food. It is safe to say that water is the most essential human need. It is critical for development, growth, and resilience.

World Water Day 2022

  1. 1. 50% 3,000 2,000 1,000 0 https://www.unwater.org/water-facts/water-sanitation-and-hygiene/ References Today, 2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. 3.6 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services. By 2040, global water demand is expected to increase by more than 50 per cent. By 2050, up to 5.7 billion people could be living in areas where water is scarce for at least one month a year. In low- and middle-income countries, 38% of health care facilities lack improved water source, 19% do not have improved sanitation and 35% lack water and soap for handwashing. More than 700 children under five who die every day from diarrhoeal diseases due to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water. World Water Day 2022 GROUNDWATER: MAKING INVISIBLE VISIBLE - increase the awareness of the importance of taking care of our groundwater - Groundwater is stored underground primarily in sands, gravels, and fractured rock. Groundwater is foundational in our daily lives. Groundwater and surface water, such as streams, lakes, and wetlands, are connected in most landscapes. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio- economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. If we limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre- industrial levels, we could cut climate-induced water stress by up to 50 per cent. Water is at the heart of adaptation to climate change - a crucial link between the climate system, human society, and the environment. Climate-resilient water supply and sanitation could save the lives of more than 360,000 infants every year. Groundwater is an important part of climate change adaptation process and is often a solution for people without access to safe water. 0 25 50 75 100 19% 35% 38%
