Project Brief:
Fulton Innovation (a division of Amway) was looking for
someone to help coordinate the look and feel of a show
property they planned to build and display at the
Consumer Electronics Show in January of 2011. Bazza
Design was selected to help coordinate the design and
integration of Fulton’s e-coupled wireless charging
capability into automotive instrument panel. Working
along side of Fulton’s engineers and model makers Bazza
Design defined and refined a wireless charging station for
use in a Tesla Roadster. Using Fulton’s patented wireless
charging technology Bazza Design developed a linear unit
that conveniently fit into the storage rail that was part of
the instrument panel. The charging station could fit just
about any sized phone or MP3 player in one compartment
and a Bluetooth ear bud in an adjacent compartment.
The feature, when paired with wireless charging devices
like cell phones and or i-pod like products, allows for easy
charging of a device without plugging it into a wired
scenario.

3. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
Research
Tesla Roadster measurements and details
were documented for the research phase.
With no CAD data, eventual 3D would be
created from hand measurements, and
adjusting of 3D on the fly from quick 3D
printed models.
4. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
Concept Development
2D Illustrator work was generated to show
context and variation of form and features.
Concept Illustrations / Form Studies / Feature Layout in variation
5. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
Concept Refinement
Additional 2D Illustrator work was created in
variation, from selected designs in the
previous phase.
6. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
Concept Refinement
Surfaces were created and evaluated by
creating 3D prints of the model for a fit
check into the vehicle rail.
Visual Gaps were
identified and revised in
the 3D model
7. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
3D Release
A final 3D model was created and handed
over for creation of the physical prototype.

9. Case Study: Automotive Wireless Charging Station
Finalization of Prototype
Working Prototype of the design installed at
the 2011 CES show in the Fulton Innovation
booth.
