ANALYSIS OF OTHER ALBUM COVERS
• Other album covers such as ‘Battle Born’, ‘Warning’
and ‘Only by the night’ are all stereotypical designs
for an indie rock album cover. However, each album
has their own unique stamp on it to represent and
signify the bands style, attitude and culture. The
albums I looked at seems to follow the traditional
conventions of what you would expect to see on an
indie rock album cover. Therefore, I will try to follow
the conventions andthe stereotyical indie rock style
that you would expect to see. However, to set it apart
from the rest of the magazines, I will use a unique
  style.

ALBUM FRONT COVER PLAN
• I plan to have the colour scheme of my album black and white as the
primary colours, then with a vivid red as the secondary colour. I have
chosen these colours because they fit into the stereotypical indie rock
colours which you expect to see. This will allow for it to stand out and
appeal to my target audience. The name of my album is called ‘The
Election.’ I chose this as the album title because it links with the name of
the band, ‘Calvin and the Presidents.’ I aim to make sure that the image is
clearly linked to the title of the album because it will take up a large
amount of space on the cover. The idea for my image is to have a low
angled mid shot of the lead band member from behind celebrating
winning an ‘election’. With this I plan for the other 2 band members to be
either side looking up at him. I have chosen this as my image idea because
it will link to the album title, together with connoting to the audience that
the lead band member has the authority over the band. This will be done
by the camera looking up at him which makes him overpowering. Also, by
having him take up more of the image than the other two band members
this further emphasizes the point of an authority figure.

ALBUM BACK COVER PLAN
• The basic idea of my back cover is to have the bands name and the album name
bold and easily visible, so that it clearly stands out to the audience. I also plan to
have a list of ten songs on the back of the album, because this is the stereotypical
place for the song list to go. Furthermore, I've decided to have another main image
on the back cover which links to the front covers image. I plan to have a low angled
side shot of the main band member looking up. I plan for this photo to look like its
just a different view of the main image on the front cover of the main band
member. This allows and connotes a different perspective to the audience of the
band member. Furthermore, by having an extra image of the main band member,
this further backs up my point that he is the authoritive figure in the band. On my
back cover of my album, the colour scheme will remain the same colours as the
front cover in order to make the album match and more professional. Regarding
the fonts on the back cover, I plan for the fonts of the band name and album name
to stay the same. This will therefore signify to the audience that these fonts are the
trademark fonts for the band and album. However, the fonts of the song list, I plan
to have a much more conventional look to them so they are clear and easily read.
The reason I am doing this is because from looking at other albums, they most of
the time do the same, thus meaning that this is a regular and stereotypical
technique that most bands use on their albums.

CD PLAN
When I come to designing my CD I have a few ideas that would be suitable for the rest of the album and
representing the genre of music and the band itself. Each of my four ideas have similarities because they all have
an image, the band name and the album name. However, the arrangement and positioning of these
components are different in each design.
• The first design has a close up of each band member at the top half of the CD. This close up will have a stern
expression from each band member to connote the style of the band and the serious side to the band. Also,
because the images of the band members are at the top, this connotes that they are powerful because they
are above all the other components. Then below that will be the name of the band in an indie rock font.
This will then lead down to the bold red stand out album title which is aimed to draw attention to itself
because it is in a bold vivid red.
• The second design is very similar to the first because it has the same images, but they are at the bottom of
the CD rather than the top. This gives them a metaphoric sense of an underdog because they are right at
the bottom of the CD. And with the same stern close ups, this could convey the determination of the band.
The name of the band is also the largest text because this connotes that the band is more important and
    has authority.
• The third design is slightly different because the image will take up the whole top half of the CD. This image
is going to be a low angled long shot of the band with a white background in order to stand out. In this
photo it will show one of the band members holding a guitar, which means that more mise en scene will be
added to the image. Also, by having a low angled long shot this will signify the power and authority of the
    band.
• The fourth design is dissimilar to the other designs because it only has an image of the main band member.
This is done in order to represent his power over the band because he is the main member. The album
name is positioned opposite the image in order to show that the band member is ‘looking at the title.’ This
is done to hopefully make the audience see that the main band member is ‘being elected’ and is the
    ‘president of the band.’
INSIDE COVER LAYOUT PLAN
• When I come to create my inside cover for my album, I have planned to use
the same techniques as to what I have seen in the research I have carried out.
In most albums, the inside cover usually is the same as the albums front
cover. There is usually just a slight change in the text used on the cover.
Therefore, I plan to use the same image on the inside cover as the image I
have on the front cover. However, I plan to make sure that the image takes up
the entire cover, due to the text being smaller and not so bold. This will
represent the stereotypical album design you see not only in the indie rock
but in the majority of albums. Furthermore, this will also connote consistency
in my album because of the use of the same image on both covers.

                   THE ELECTION

                                                THE ELECTION
PANEL LAYOUT PLAN
                                                            • Finally, when I come to creating the
panel of my album, I have decided
to just have text and no images,
                                                              because this is the stereotypical
style of most album panels. Also, I
have decided to use my three
                                                              colours (red, black, white) again
                                                              because this will increase the
consistency of my album and further
                                                              emphasize the indie rock genre
                                                              across to the audience.
Furthermore, the font style in which
I choose for my album front cover

will be used on the panel too. This is
because it will connote to the
audience that this is a trademark
                                                              font and this enhances the
consistency of my album even more
                                                              so.

This gives them a metaphoric sense of an underdog because they are right at the bottom of the CD. And with the same stern close ups, this could convey the determination of the band. The name of the band is also the largest text because this connotes that the band is more important and has authority. • The third design is slightly different because the image will take up the whole top half of the CD. This image is going to be a low angled long shot of the band with a white background in order to stand out. In this photo it will show one of the band members holding a guitar, which means that more mise en scene will be added to the image. Also, by having a low angled long shot this will signify the power and authority of the band. • The fourth design is dissimilar to the other designs because it only has an image of the main band member. This is done in order to represent his power over the band because he is the main member. The album name is positioned opposite the image in order to show that the band member is ‘looking at the title.’ This is done to hopefully make the audience see that the main band member is ‘being elected’ and is the ‘president of the band.’
  • 10. INSIDE COVER LAYOUT PLAN • When I come to create my inside cover for my album, I have planned to use the same techniques as to what I have seen in the research I have carried out. In most albums, the inside cover usually is the same as the albums front cover. There is usually just a slight change in the text used on the cover. Therefore, I plan to use the same image on the inside cover as the image I have on the front cover. However, I plan to make sure that the image takes up the entire cover, due to the text being smaller and not so bold. This will represent the stereotypical album design you see not only in the indie rock but in the majority of albums. Furthermore, this will also connote consistency in my album because of the use of the same image on both covers. THE ELECTION THE ELECTION
  • 11. PANEL LAYOUT PLAN • Finally, when I come to creating the panel of my album, I have decided to just have text and no images, because this is the stereotypical style of most album panels. Also, I have decided to use my three colours (red, black, white) again because this will increase the consistency of my album and further emphasize the indie rock genre across to the audience. Furthermore, the font style in which I choose for my album front cover THE ELECTION THE ELECTION THE ELECTION THE ELECTION will be used on the panel too. This is because it will connote to the audience that this is a trademark font and this enhances the consistency of my album even more so.
