Mark your calendars: National Volunteer Week is April 19-25th! It’s the perfect opportunity to start thinking about ways to show your chapter volunteers the appreciation they deserve all year-round. Volunteering is one of the stickiest forms of member engagement, and happy volunteers can keep your association chapters on track for years to come. Given that 20-25% of staff labor in associations come from volunteer members, it’s a worthwhile effort to utilize recognition in creating a supportive environment. Let’s draw from research and our own community for a dynamic discussion on ways to spotlight association volunteers and celebrate volunteering in all aspects!

Look at the research about volunteering (MBVS and Decision to Volunteer)
Look at what we know about volunteers (ForesightWorks Driver)
Brainstorm ideas!
Report out and head out to put a new light on our volunteers.

At a minimum, 20-25% of the workforce hours in any given year are completed by a worker who is not on your payroll.
Volunteers provide direct labor – in some cases highly skilled (leadership, content creation, mentors, etc.), in others additional “hands on help” (registrar, greeter, monitor, etc.). Volunteer hours make up 20-25% of an association’s total work hours (staff plus volunteers). 67 hrs/yr

It affirmed volunteer preferences (short-term, outcome-based opportunities with a pro-social WIIFM) and disappointments (time/timing, flexibility, clear direction, assessment, inclusion). It identified what drives volunteer engagement & therefore satisfaction (6 drivers).
It highlighted the weaknesses in the system that keep us from getting the highest participation and the right people in the right positions. Namely, job design, selection, assessment.
It embraces the 60% who prefer jobs that are not annual commitments but meaningful jobs that achieve an outcome completed in near horizon.
It puts as much effort into the pool as it does into the board.
It puts as much effort into the pool as it does into the board. Finding a place for the 58% who want more
Almost 8,400 of the 25,000 respondents described themselves as non-volunteers and 58% indicated a desire to be more engaged. If we accept the premise that being “more engaged” would include volunteering, there appears to be a big opportunity to boost an associations production capacity and retention rate.
