3. Which specific production tasks have you
enjoyed most this year?
• Out of all the production tasks I have done so far the music video task has been
my favourite, specifically the editing and filming process. I enjoyed this the
most because of the wide variety and amount of options you have, there are so
many editing techniques and effects you can use to make the video look cool, you
can truly make it your own and add things that appeal to yourself. By doing this
the editing process really made me feel like I was doing something I loved, the
same applies to the filming process, you can explore different places and areas
that you enjoy and incorporate them into your work. I also really enjoyed the
challenge and learning process, this was my first time recording and assembling a
professional music video so I made a lot of mistakes but ultimately learned from
them which in my opinion is a great feeling, making an error but learning a new
skill because of it.
4. What challenges have you faced this
year in your practical work?
• One example of a challenge I have faced this year in my practical work is time
management, in the music video task I found it pretty hard deciding whether or
not I liked certain clips, I would review the shots we got afterwards and decide
if I wanted to use them, I was very critical on the clips, in result of this I
found that I was deleting and re shooting quite a lot of things which prolonged
the footage gathering process. I nearly didn’t have enough time to get all of the
required footage which caused stress and probably degraded the final product
because of rushing.
5. Which process do you think you have
made the most development in?
• I think I have developed the most in the research and planning processes, as in
the earlier stages of the course I didn’t take planning or research as serious as
I was very confident in my own ability to create on the spot without any outside
help or preparation. This has completely changed since as I have noticed the
value of good research and planning, I have seen a huge increase in the quality
and consistency of my work since I started to seriously plan my work before hand
and invest time into research, they have both helped a lot and made my work a lot
higher quality overall.
6. Which technical skill do you think is you
strongest?
• I think my strongest technical skill is filming and editing, although the music
video task was my first real experience with a professional camera and editing
software I seemed to pick it up quite quickly, I also heavily enjoy the filming
and editing process which I also think played a part in why its in my opinion my
best technical skill. I feel like I am a creative individual also, I tend to be
quite experimental with the things I do which has also definitely had an impact
on the quality and uniqueness of my cinematography and editing style.
7. What do you think has been your best
project and why?
• I think the best project I have made so far was the music video, I put a lot of
detail into the pro forma and tried to go very in depth with my answers so in
terms of the written part of the assignment I would say it was successful. The
practical parts turned out decent as well in my opinion, the video itself was cut
to precision in order to align with the flow and vocals of the song, the editing
also portrayed an upbeat, fast paced vibe similar to the songs tone. Overall I
would say its my best assignment since each part of the work was heavily detailed
and precisely crafted to replicate the aesthetic I established in my initial
ideas, each aspect of the task was also linked, consistent and complimented each
other.
8. Which project did you enjoy least and
why?
• The project I enjoyed the least so far was the foley task, I felt like I didn’t
enjoy it that much because of the difficult time I had with acquiring the sounds
I needed, I had to resort to using my phone for getting the audio which is
already not that efficient. Also it turned out that the app I used to get audio
on my phone was not free and you could only export the audio from the app into
your files if you paid, which at the time I was not willing to do. Finally I
managed to find a way to actually get the audio from my phone to the computer
which was through camera roll videos, this worked but I had to unlink the video
from the audio on every single clip individually and delete all of the footage
clips one by one. I just think that too many frustrating things happened and too
many errors occurred for me to enjoy the foley task that much. Maybe I would have
liked it better if the process ran smoother.
9. How have you managed your time
effectively this year?
• I managed my time this year by assigning different parts of an assignment to
different time slots, for example in the production portion of the music video
task I decided to split up editing and filming, I gave myself a couple of weeks
for production just to make sure I had all the clips and things I needed, I then
moved on to editing and assigned a precise time frame. By doing this I felt as
though it made it easier to manage my time as I set myself a specific time and
routine to completing certain parts of my work.
11. What roles/specialism do you see
yourself working in on future projects?
• For my fmp I have a few ideas, I haven’t decided on one of them just yet but so
far I've been thinking of doing either a podcast, music video or a short film. I
feel like these activities I enjoy the most and feel like I can really put
everything into one of these tasks and make it quite good. The fmp will also
provide me with a lot more experience in multiple aspects, for one I will become
much more acquainted with premiere pro and a camera if I decide to do the music
video or movie and if I go with the podcast I will finally know how to properly
record and edit audio.
12. What do you see yourself doing at the
end of the course next year?
• I think I will probably seek a media related career, I feel like I can use my
skills and qualifications from college to boost my chances of employment in
certain aspects of media, preferably film making or graphic designing. I think my
experience will give me a better chance, along with this I might set up my own
business, I've always wanted to just haven’t ever really knows thee specifics
like what type of business or how I will go about doing it but since then I have
gained knowledge and insight on how to start on making a business so it could be
a good thing to do.
13. What research do you need to do in order to
explore your future progression options?
• I think I need to research on what type of industry I want to go into just to
fully confirm so I don’t end up in a job I dislike, after this I will need to
research specific requirements and the qualifications that are needed for
whatever industry or job I want, this will give me more of a chance of success in
the industry and it will also give me a chance to explore other options if I
don’t meet the requirements of a specific role. In terms of setting up a business
part I will need to research on how to do so and how to succeed with my business.
Editor's Notes
Consider 2-3 specific practical parts of your work this year [e.g. filming or editing, etc] and discuss why these have been your favoured parts of the course so far
Think about the work that has been most challenging this year [try and be specific when talking about tasks] and how you responded to it?
A process would be research or planning or time management, it could be a combination. Talk about what it is, how you feel you’ve developed and where this was most evident in the year
This is a technical skill like filming, editing, photo manipulation, designing adverts or using Photoshop – think of an example that shows your strength
This is looking at how you see yourself specialising as we move into the FMP and into Year 2
