Topic 2. Exploring the Resilience issues in the North East
region.
At this point in the renewal of the North East RCS we are
focussing on key resilience issues for the North East . Have we identified all
the Resilience issues
Resilience issues are those that are significant enough that that effect the identity
changing them or their general condition would threaten the and function of the
identity or character of the landscape. landscapes of the
North East?
Are there other
Resilience issues that
can be added?
What are they?

2. HOW DOES RESILIENCE THINKING WORK…?
“Resilience is a measure of a system’s capacity to cope with change
while retaining essentially the same structure and function.”
Resilience thinking is a new
framework for helping
communities to understand how
their catchments work, and where
and how they can best intervene
to keep LANDSCAPE SYSTEMS
operating effectively.
Management can then be designed to:-
Assessing the resilience of a system involves
Maintain a functioning system either by
identifying changes to the CRITICAL
REMAINING WITHIN THRESHOLDS or
DYNAMICS that underpin and influence the
TRANSFORM (enhance) systems to a
delivery of desired values, goods and services
desirable (or least undesirable) alternative
of a focus system …
state.
Managing for resilience involves
PROMOTING DIVERSITY &
FLEXIBILITY in those systems,
and building the CAPACITY TO
ADAPT & CHANGE.
