  2. 2. Introduction  One priority of Bright Lights USA, under the leadership of president and CEO Daniel Farber, is good corporate citizenship. One way Bright Lights USA gives back to the community is through its association with the American Red Cross, a health and disaster relief organization which operates around the world. Volunteers form the backbone of Red Cross work, and are one of the chief reasons the American Red Cross can respond to thousands of disasters annually. Whether it's a simple home fire or a wide- scale ecological event, the Red Cross depends on friends and neighbors to stretch its ability to help to the limit. Some volunteers participate in direct disaster relief efforts, such as food and shelter aid. Others, especially in areas that are prone to specific types of disasters, serve as disaster preparedness presenters, educating the local population on the risks unique to the area and how they can better mitigate them.

Some volunteers work to manage other volunteers, recruiting more help for large disasters or keeping records of volunteer work, while others disseminate information about the help the Red Cross can offer to affected families. By bringing these diverse skill sets together in one place, the American Red Cross is better able to support local communities as they get back on their feet.
